Chapter 7 - The Predator’s Patience

The S-Rank pressure in the clearing was suffocating. Rin Kusanagi stood inches from Kaizer, her crystalline blue eyes boring into his soul. The other rookies had frozen, trapped between the corpse of the Behemoth and the terrifying aura of the Azure Blade.

"Who are you, really?" Rin repeated, her hand white-knuckled on her hilt.

Kaizer didn't answer. Instead, his eyes glazed over. His knees buckled, and he collapsed into the damp moss, his breathing becoming shallow and ragged.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: Deceptive Exhaustion (Faked)] [Mana Signature: Fading...]

Rin blinked, her aura flickering in confusion. She reached out, her fingers hovering over his neck. His pulse was thready; his skin was clammy. To her S-Rank senses, he looked like a "Zero" who had just burned every drop of life force he possessed to perform a single, impossible feat.

"He... he overexerted his core," the D-Rank Vanguard whispered, rushing over. "He saved us, and it almost killed him!"

Rin stepped back, her brow furrowed. Was I wrong? she wondered. Is he just a desperate boy with a fractured mana heart? She didn't look convinced, but with nineteen witnesses staring at her, she couldn't exactly interrogate a hero who had just passed out.

The License and the Refusal

Three days later, Kaizer stood in the lobby of the JAA. In his hand was a sleek, black card: Rank C - Physical Reinforcement. He had passed. He was no longer a "Zero."

"Kaizer Gold."

He turned to see Rin Kusanagi leaning against a marble pillar. She wasn't in her armor today; she wore a sharp, midnight-blue suit that screamed authority.

"Vice-Captain," Kaizer bowed, playing the part of the grateful student.

"The JAA is satisfied with your results," Rin said, walking toward him. "But I am not. You are an anomaly, Kaizer. A High-C who can paralyze a mutated Behemoth? That's not 'Reinforcement.' That's potential."

She pulled out a gold-embossed card. "The Rising Sun Guild wants to scout you. I will personally oversee your training. You'll have the best equipment, S-Rank mentors, and a salary that would make a CEO weep. Most importantly... I'll be watching you."

Kaizer looked at the card. It was a golden ticket to the top of the world. But he saw it for what it was: a leash.

"I'm honored, Vice-Captain," Kaizer said, his voice calm. "But I have to decline."

Rin's eyes widened. "Decline? You realize thousands of B-Ranks beg for this seat?"

"I'm a late-bloomer," Kaizer lied, tucking his C-Rank license into his wallet. "My mana is unstable. I need to figure out my own path before I slow down a guild like yours. I just want to live a chill life and finish my degree."

Rin watched him walk away, her eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "A 'chill life'? You're lying to yourself, Kaizer Gold. You have the eyes of a wolf."

The Shadow's Rival

Back in his apartment, Kaizer sat in total darkness. He pulled up the anonymous message from Korea on his burner phone.

"The Shadow User in Korea is watching your debut..."

"Paimon," Kaizer whispered. "Can we feel each other? Does Kang-Jun know I exist because of the shadows?"

The shadows in the room swirled into a vortex, and Paimon manifested, her crimson eyes glowing with a dark, predatory light.

"The Abyss is a mirror, Contractor," she purred. "When you splash in the water, the other side feels the ripples. But he does not see 'you' yet. He only sees a new flame in the dark."

"What kind of entity is his sovereign?" Kaizer asked.

Paimon's smile vanished, replaced by a look of ancient disdain. "A different Warlord. One who does not care for conquest or entertainment. He serves Balan, the Lord of Malice. Where I seek to rule, Balan seeks to rot. He chooses vessels of pure evil—predators who wait for their prey to develop, to become strong and hopeful, only so the 'devouring' tastes sweeter."

Kaizer looked at his hands. He thought about Kang-Jun, the "Grey Reaper," sitting across the sea, waiting for him to get "strong enough" to be worth eating.

"So I'm being raised like cattle for another Shadow User," Kaizer muttered, a dark chuckle escaping his lips.

"Only if you are weak," Paimon reminded him.

Kaizer stood up, his violet eyes flashing in the dark. He didn't feel fear. He felt a cold, calculating hunger.

"Then I'll grow faster than he expects. I won't be the prey."
