Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – Into the City

Night had fallen over Atlanta once again.

The city looked different in the dark.

During the day the destruction was obvious: burned cars, broken glass, collapsed buildings. But at night the ruins became something else entirely.

Something quieter.

Something more dangerous.

The group moved slowly through the narrow streets, staying close to the shadows.

Alex Mercer—now fully known among the soldiers as Ghost—walked at the front of the formation.

His tactical mask hid his expression completely, the red lenses reflecting the faint light of the moon.

Behind him, Sergeant Cole scanned the rooftops.

Jackson walked near the center carrying two backpacks full of supplies.

Ramirez guarded the rear.

The formation had become natural.

Efficient.

Professional.

Cole finally broke the silence.

"You know something, Ghost?"

Ghost didn't turn around.

"Yes."

"You run a tighter squad than half the officers I've served under."

Jackson chuckled quietly.

"He's not wrong."

Ramirez nodded.

"Kid's got command instincts."

Ghost didn't respond.

Instead, he opened the system interface again.

SURVIVAL RESOURCE SYSTEM

Supply Points: 18

Survivor Unit Members: 4

Mission Progress: 55%

New Mission Active:

Reach Central Atlanta

Reward: Elite Equipment Crate

Ghost closed the interface.

The system clearly wanted him deeper inside the city.

Which meant something important was waiting there.

Cole suddenly raised a hand.

"Movement."

Everyone stopped.

Across the street, a small group of walkers stumbled between abandoned vehicles.

Five of them.

Ramirez whispered.

"We can go around."

Ghost shook his head.

"No."

Cole looked at him.

"You want to clear them?"

"Yes."

Ghost stepped forward.

The first walker turned toward him immediately.

Its arms reached out.

Ghost moved faster.

The knife flashed.

Walker Eliminated

+1 Supply Point

The second walker followed.

Another strike.

Walker Eliminated

+1 SP

Cole fired a single shot to drop the third.

Jackson handled the fourth.

Ramirez finished the last.

Within seconds, the street fell silent again.

Jackson wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Man… I'm getting used to this."

Ramirez smirked.

"That's either a good sign or a terrible one."

They continued walking.

Downtown Atlanta grew closer with every block.

The buildings became taller.

The streets narrower.

And the number of walkers increased.

Suddenly, a distant gunshot echoed through the night.

Everyone froze.

Cole whispered.

"That sounded close."

Jackson listened carefully.

"Maybe three blocks away."

Ramirez frowned.

"Could be survivors."

Ghost looked toward the sound.

Or bait.

Or a trap.

But the system suddenly activated again.

NEW OBJECTIVE DETECTED

Unknown Survivor Signal

Location: Central Atlanta

Ghost narrowed his eyes behind the mask.

Interesting.

Cole looked at him.

"You thinking what I'm thinking?"

"Yes."

Jackson sighed.

"We're going toward the gunfire, aren't we?"

Ghost started walking again.

"Yes."

Ramirez laughed quietly.

"Of course we are."

They moved faster now.

The city became darker as clouds covered the moon.

Several minutes later they reached a major intersection.

And what they saw made everyone stop.

A military tank sat abandoned in the middle of the street.

Dozens of walkers surrounded it.

Cole whispered.

"…What the hell happened here?"

Jackson scanned the area.

"Looks like the army tried to hold the intersection."

Ramirez kicked a spent shell casing.

"And lost."

Ghost studied the scene carefully.

The walkers were distracted.

Gathered tightly around the tank.

Something—or someone—had drawn their attention.

Suddenly a faint sound echoed from inside the vehicle.

A metallic tapping.

Jackson blinked.

"Did you hear that?"

Cole raised his rifle.

"Yeah."

Ramirez whispered.

"Something's inside."

Ghost looked at the tank again.

And realized something.

The system had brought them here.

Which meant the person inside the tank might be important.

Very important.

Ghost raised his hand.

"Cover me."

Cole frowned.

"You're going in there?"

"Yes."

Ramirez looked nervous.

"That's a lot of walkers."

Ghost didn't answer.

Instead he stepped into the street.

The walkers slowly turned toward him.

Their groans filled the night air.

Cole whispered.

"Alright boys… looks like it's showtime."

Jackson raised his rifle.

Ramirez tightened his grip on his knife.

And Ghost walked straight toward the tank.

Inside that armored vehicle…

A man was about to wake up.

A sheriff.

A survivor.

And one of the future leaders of the apocalypse.

Rick Grimes.
