Chapter 13 - Edge of Collapse

The ship groaned under the strain of the rift's relentless energy. Every system flickered, lights dimmed and blazed in unpredictable bursts, and the hum of the engines no longer sounded mechanical—it resonated like a living pulse, echoing the crew's mounting fear.

Kael Orion's eyes darted between the consoles. "The signal isn't just predicting anymore. It's escalating. Every fluctuation, every anomaly—it's forcing us to react in real-time."

Lyra gripped the controls, knuckles white. "We can't outrun it. We can't outsmart it. All we can do is survive the next wave."

Eli's fingers flew over the engineering panels, but Kael noticed a subtle hesitation. Is it fear… or the signal making him doubt himself?

Mara's voice cut through the tension. "The life-support regulators just spiked. If they fail completely, we lose oxygen in minutes."

Kael's pulse quickened. "We don't have minutes. Stabilize the regulators and reroute auxiliary power immediately!"

Lyra's voice wavered. "I'm trying, but the feedback loops keep reversing. It's like the signal knows every move I make before I make it."

The ship lurched violently as alarms screamed. Sparks flew from the hull panels. Kael realized the signal had now gained full control over environmental systems, manipulating the ship to amplify fear.

Then the message appeared on the main display, glowing ominously:"Event: Life-Threatening Failure – Predicted Casualty: One Crew Member if actions fail."

Mara gasped. "It's not bluffing. It's giving us exact predictions—and counting on error."

Kael's jaw tightened. "Then we focus. We can't let it manipulate hesitation or doubt. Everyone—trust your training, trust each other."

Minutes stretched like hours as the crew worked in perfect synchronization, each second a battle against the signal's manipulations. Lyra manually overrode several systems, Mara recalibrated power conduits, Eli reinforced the hull's integrity.

A sudden surge hit the auxiliary power node. Sparks flew dangerously close to Eli. Kael lunged, gripping the console, redirecting energy to stabilize it. "Hold on, Eli! Don't make a mistake!"

The node stabilized—but not before a violent jolt sent Kael staggering. His heart pounded. Outside the viewport, the void shimmered, black waves curling and twisting like living smoke. The entity behind the signal pulsed as if mocking them.

Kael met the crew's eyes. "We survived this… but it's preparing the next test. And I can feel it… it's going to be worse."

Lyra exhaled, voice tight. "I don't know how much longer we can keep doing this."

Kael's jaw hardened. "As long as we have breath, we fight. Together."

The ship shuddered again. Lights flickered one last time before stabilizing. But deep in the void, the black pulses of energy coiled like serpents, ready to strike again.

The signal isn't done. And we're running out of margin for error.
