Chapter 3 - THE HIDDEN TEST

The morning air was crisp, carrying faint noises of the city into Elite Prestige Academy. Class 1-F filed into their classroom, a low hum of nervous chatter buzzing through the room. After yesterday's first impressions, the students were still adjusting — alliances were tentative, suspicions growing, and ambitions simmering just below the surface.

Kaito Maikeru entered calmly, hands in his pockets, eyes scanning the room like a predator surveying its prey. His gaze caught Sayaka Mizuno by the window. She acknowledged him with the faintest tilt of her head. No words, no unnecessary gestures. Just observation.

The door opened, and a young teacher stepped in — not Ms. Delacroix, but someone tasked with introducing their first class assignment, a test to evaluate the students' collaboration, problem-solving, and adaptability.

"Good morning, Class 1-F," the teacher said, voice polite but firm. "Today, you'll be participating in an activity designed to test how well you work under pressure. You'll be divided into groups, and each group must complete a series of tasks. The goal isn't just speed — it's about strategy, observation, and cooperation."

A murmur spread through the class. Some students whispered, excited at the prospect of proving themselves. Others groaned, dreading the social pressure.

Kaito's eyes narrowed slightly. Pressure. Cooperation. Observation. Perfect.

The first task was revealed on the screen: a logic-based scavenger hunt within the school grounds. Clues were hidden throughout the corridors and classrooms, and each group had to retrieve items, solve puzzles, and report back. The instructions were vague — the evaluation criteria, hidden.

Immediately, students scrambled to form groups. Some clustered with friends, some with those they considered strong, and some were left alone, wary of being overshadowed.

Sayaka walked to an isolated corner, gathering a small kit of tools provided for the task, and ignored everyone else. She didn't need a group.

Kaito, meanwhile, was approached by a few students hoping to form a "strong" team. He accepted reluctantly, saying simply: "I'll participate… as long as we follow the path I choose."

The scavenger hunt began. Chaos erupted almost immediately.

One group ran headlong into corridors, arguing over directions.

Another misread a clue and wasted precious minutes searching the wrong classrooms.

One boy tried to sneak ahead and take shortcuts, only to be blocked by the building's security system.

Kaito moved deliberately, quietly guiding his team. He never rushed, but subtly influenced their choices, nudging them toward efficiency while keeping the appearance that they were leading themselves. Every hesitation by another team was noted, every mistake filed away.

Sayaka moved alone, silent and precise, completing tasks methodically. She ignored distractions, ignored attempts to interact, and solved puzzles almost effortlessly. When another student tried to interfere with a clue she had solved, she blocked them with calm, surgical efficiency, leaving them stunned.

By the end of the task, the results were telling:

Kaito's group had finished second, not through brute force, but through observation, careful planning, and subtle manipulation.

Sayaka had completed all tasks flawlessly, first among the class, earning respect, fear, and confusion in equal measure.

Other groups had failed to complete all tasks, floundering in chaos and miscommunication.

After the activity, students gathered in the classroom to review their performance. Quiet whispers spread: Who are those two? How are they so different?

Kaito leaned back, calm as ever. Observation first. Action later.

Sayaka, seated at the back, didn't bother responding to questions from curious classmates. Her expression remained composed, unreadable.

The day ended with subtle tension in the air. Friendships had begun forming, rivalries simmered, and quiet strategies were already emerging. 1-F was far from unified, but the cracks and alliances were forming — perfect for someone who could see the game behind the game.

Kaito glanced around the room one last time before leaving. This class is predictable. Ambition, fear, insecurity… all easily exploited. The game has begun, even if they don't know it yet.
