Chapter 1 - Class Sorting

I was watching eagerly as Draco was sorted into Slytherin when suddenly I heard my name called. "Quinn Pendragon," Professor McGonagall announced. My heart pounded, I took a deep breath, and moved forward to sit down. The hat hesitated for a moment, then declared, "Oh, I see a strong mind and a powerful family magic—long line of magical ancestors—brave and cunning. Slytherin it is!" I swallowed hard, walked over, and sat among the other students, trying to hide my nerves. I glanced at Draco and caught him laughing at my pink hair. My fists clenched, but I held back.

Who cares? It's my choice—my magic, my style. I asked my mom for this color so I could stand out. I can speak to reptiles and cast spells without a wand—powerful abilities. Still, Draco only talks about family and purebloods. I hate that word. I come from a magical family, too. Maybe I could be a true friend to him, if only he'd look past his biases. How do I even start a conversation? I watch as all the food appears on the table, then grab some to eat. Draco finally notices me. "So, that hair color, is it natural? Never seen anything like it," he says with an arrogant smirk. I shrug, "My mom wanted me to be unique." I eat calmly, trying not to let him get to me.

Draco's smirk widens. "You definitely stand out. And I've never seen someone who looks like you in Slytherin," he comments bluntly. I narrow my eyes. "Watch it, Draco. If you want a real friend, I'm here. But if you keep being a jerk, I'll tell my father—Howl Pendragon—the guy your dad needs for his spells." Wow, did I just sound like an idiot? I stand up, stepping away from him, ready for whatever comes next. Draco clenched his hands like I just beat him in a duel. I kinda did, using my mouth, not my wand, but it still felt good. I should head to the common room and my room. I need to write to my mother; she would want to hear about everything, including this. I follow the other students to our common room. I head up to my space, sit down, and start writing a letter to my mom about the house I got and the conversation with Draco. I send my owl out, and I yawn. Busy day full of surprises. I change into my warm pajamas and lie down and fall asleep, hoping that tomorrow I can start over with Draco and become friends with him. This feels like a crush; I am only 11. I need to focus on my schoolwork and make my parents proud of me.

I wake up the next day and get dressed and find my uniform ruined I knew who it was he isn't going to make this easy I have a spare I think I find it in my trunk and get dressed and head to the great hall for breakfast I sit down and eat, I see Draco looking upset that I didn't have on the ruined uniform. I sip my juice. "A good wizard always keeps extra clothes, Draco, anyway, no matter, today is the dueling class, right? So, I have a proposal: how about we go against each other?" I blurt out. I swallow. Come on, Quinn, grow up, be a man for fuck sake.

Draco smirks, "You want to bet something?" he said. I grin and stand up, "Sure, if I win, I get to color your hair a bright color, and if I lose, I will dye my hair back to my natural color, deal?" I say. Draco shakes my hand, "Deal," he said. I hear my owl, and a letter gets dropped off. My mom wrote back. I open it and smile. I walk as I read. I head to the defense of the dark arts. I sit down. The professor explains that we will only be using disarm spells, nothing more, as agreed. We raised our hands, and I stood there with my wand at the ready. I saw the smug look on Draco's face. Why is my heart pounding just breath, Quinn? I get into the stance, and once the professor tells us to start, thanks to my father teaching me before school.

My mom, I'm ready, and when Draco casts a spell summoning a snake, I see Snape about to get involved when the snake gets in front of a student. I walk over, speaking to it, and shake my head. The snake stops. I bend down and pick it up. Draco looks shocked, like everyone else. I sigh, "Yes, I can speak to reptiles, so what?" I said, defending myself as much as I could. When class ended, I was holding the snake. "Let's get you home, or at least outside," I said. Draco walked up. "So it's true you can speak to reptiles?" he said. I nodded. "Yeah, what of it?" I said. Draco smiles softly for the first time. "You're not so bad," he said. I smile happily, "You're not so bad either," I said, and we head to dinner. I sit down, and we eat together.
