The Veil was alive, pulsating with energy, shadows twisting and curling like serpents around Zara's feet. The air felt heavier, thick with anticipation, as if it knew what was coming.
Kai's golden eyes scanned the area. "This is your first combined combat trial. You'll face multiple threats at once. Each one tests a different aspect of your control and adaptability. Remember… the Night Sovereign is watching. He thrives on fear and doubt."
Zara's shadows coiled around her arms and legs, ready. "I'm ready," she said, jaw tight, heart pounding.
Serin appeared beside her, his violet eyes glowing faintly. "Stay sharp. Watch your surroundings. Flow with your shadows, anticipate your opponent, and remain calm. Illusions will be your greatest challenge here."
Almost immediately, shadows erupted from every corner. Multiple creatures, some grotesque, some vaguely humanoid, charged at her from different angles.
Zara's instincts kicked in. Her shadows lashed out, forming protective walls, striking with precision, and coiling around enemies. But something was off. Each creature she struck dissolved… only to reappear moments later, slightly changed, mocking her every movement.
"Illusions!" she shouted. "They're not real!"
Lyra's voice echoed from the darkness. "Not everything you see can be trusted. Trust your instincts… and your shadows. The Night Sovereign will manipulate reality to see you falter. Do not give him that satisfaction."
Zara gritted her teeth, focusing. Her shadows surged, weaving through the illusions, striking with intention. One by one, the false creatures flickered, dissolving as she realized which were real and which were tricks.
A cold whisper slid into her mind:
"So clever… yet so predictable… Heir…"
The Night Sovereign. His presence felt closer than ever, probing her thoughts, tugging at her fear. Zara clenched her fists, forcing her mind to steel. "I'm not predictable. I'm not afraid."
Her shadows responded, evolving mid-combat, forming blades, shields, and serpentine extensions. With each strike, she pushed further, moving faster, thinking clearer. The illusions weakened, and finally, only the real creatures remained.
With a final surge of will and power, Zara's shadows struck in perfect harmony. The last enemy dissolved, and the Veil fell silent, shadows curling softly around her like protective serpents.
Kai stepped forward, nodding. "Impressive. You've learned to discern reality from illusion, to anticipate, and to merge intent with your shadows. That is a significant step forward."
Serin's eyes gleamed. "You are stronger than I expected, Heir. But remember… the Night Sovereign will not stop. He learns from every encounter, and he will adapt to you."
Zara exhaled, shadows pulsing with energy. "Then I'll keep learning. I'll keep growing. And when he comes… I'll be ready."
The Veil seemed to pulse in approval—or perhaps amusement. The Night Sovereign's whispers faded, but Zara knew they would return, stronger and sharper than before.
