Chapter 1 - 1: The Footage

The interrogation room was too quiet.

Not peaceful quiet.

Heavy quiet.

The kind that pressed against your ears until even your heartbeat felt like noise.

Marcus Vane sat still, hands cuffed to the metal table. His eyes weren't nervous. They weren't angry.

They were… calculating.

Across from him, Inspector Lila Nox opened a file slowly, deliberately. She had practiced this moment in her head a dozen times.

First big case after her promotion.

No mistakes.

No hesitation.

She looked up.

"Marcus Vane," she said calmly. "Former Special Recon. Discharged eight months ago."

Marcus didn't respond.

His gaze stayed fixed on her, unblinking.

Lila slid a tablet across the table.

"Do you recognize this?"

Marcus glanced down.

A paused video.

A street. Nighttime. A flickering streetlight.

And a man.

Him.

"…Yes," Marcus said.

Lila tapped the screen.

The footage began to play.

Grainy.

Muted.

Marcus walking beside a woman.

The woman's face partially hidden by her hood.

They looked… normal.

Almost like they knew each other.

Lila watched him carefully.

"Who is she?"

Marcus shook his head slowly. "I don't know her name."

"But you were with her."

"Yes."

Lila paused the video.

"Why?"

Marcus leaned back slightly. "She approached me. Said she needed help."

"What kind of help?"

"…She didn't say."

Lila narrowed her eyes.

"Convenient."

She tapped the screen again.

The video continued.

They walked under the streetlight.

Then—

Marcus stopped.

The woman turned.

For a split second, everything looked still.

And then—

He grabbed her.

Violently.

Slammed her against the wall.

The footage glitched slightly.

But it was clear enough.

He was attacking her.

Lila stopped the video.

Silence filled the room again.

"Explain that."

Marcus stared at the frozen image.

At himself.

At his own hands around the woman's arms.

His jaw tightened.

"That's not what happened."

Lila didn't blink.

"It's on camera."

Marcus shook his head slowly.

"No… that's not real."

Lila leaned forward.

"Are you saying the footage is fake?"

Marcus looked up at her.

For the first time, there was something in his eyes.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Certainty.

"I'm saying," he said quietly,

"…that's not me."

The air shifted.

Lila felt it.

That subtle crack in the case.

The kind that either leads to truth…

Or destroys it.

She turned the tablet back toward herself.

Rewound the clip.

Played it again.

Same result.

Same violence.

Same man.

Same face.

Marcus Vane.

She exhaled slowly.

"You expect me to believe," she said,

"that someone fabricated an entire CCTV sequence just to frame you?"

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

His eyes moved slightly.

Not to her.

To the corner of the room.

The camera.

Watching them.

Always watching.

Then he spoke.

"They didn't fabricate it."

Lila frowned. "Then what are you saying?"

Marcus leaned forward, his voice dropping almost to a whisper.

"They replaced it."

A pause.

Lila felt a chill crawl up her spine.

"Replaced what?"

Marcus's lips barely moved.

"Reality."
