Chapter 40 - Chapter 40 – Lucien’s Secret

The forest was alive with danger. Hunters moved silently, their flashlights cutting swaths of light through the dense darkness. Ava's hands glowed faintly as she held onto her power, energy pulsing with her heartbeat.

Lucien led her along a narrow ridge, his pistol ready, every step precise and measured. Yet even as they ran, he didn't speak—until they reached a small clearing surrounded by jagged rocks.

"Stop here," Lucien ordered.

Ava panted, fear and adrenaline mixing inside her. "Why?"

He turned, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "Because you need to know something. About me… and why I can fight them the way I do."

Ava frowned. "What do you mean?"

Lucien knelt beside her, voice low and serious. "I've been trained my whole life for this. Not just hunting, not just fighting… I was part of a covert program myself. A program similar to yours, but… darker."

Ava's stomach tightened. "You were experimented on too?"

He nodded once. "I know what it's like to be… manipulated. To have your life stolen, controlled. I also know what it's like to fight back and survive. That's why I can keep you alive."

Her breath caught. "I… I didn't know…"

Lucien reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. "I never wanted you to know this until now. But they're coming, and you need to trust me completely."

Ava's eyes softened, and for a fleeting moment, fear was replaced by something else—desire, trust, and an unspoken bond that had been growing since the moment they met.

Before she could respond, a loud snap echoed through the trees. They spun around. Three elite hunters from the Dominion emerged, moving with deadly precision.

Lucien stood in front of Ava instantly, pistol aimed. "Back to back," he said.

Ava nodded, golden energy beginning to pulse around her hands, responding to the tension, the danger.

The hunters charged.

Lucien moved first—fluid, lethal, every movement perfectly calculated. He took down one hunter with a single strike and a well-placed kick. The second lunged, but Ava's energy flared instinctively, sending him sprawling across the ground with a blast of force.

The final hunter paused, watching her carefully. "So… you're awake," he muttered.

Ava's heart pounded, and something inside her clicked. She stepped forward. The golden glow intensified, enveloping her in a protective aura. She had never felt this powerful, this alive.

Lucien's voice was low, urgent: "Focus, Ava! Control it, or it will control you."

She inhaled, taking a deep, steadying breath. The energy responded. With a wave of her hand, the final hunter was thrown back, landing hard against a tree.

Silence fell. The forest seemed to hold its breath. Ava's chest heaved, adrenaline mixing with newfound power.

Lucien stepped closer, his hand brushing against hers. "You're stronger than I imagined," he murmured.

Ava's heart skipped. The warmth in his gaze, the way he stood protectively beside her—it made her feel safe, wanted, even as danger still loomed.

Aurora, who had been silently observing, finally spoke. "Well… that was impressive. But don't get too comfortable. More are coming."

Lucien didn't flinch. "Let them come."

Ava looked at him, golden energy still dancing around her hands. "I… I'm ready."

He reached for her, pulling her close. "And I'll be right here, always."

The distance between them disappeared. The danger faded, if only for a moment, as their lips met in a fierce, consuming kiss. Fire and passion flared, blending with the adrenaline, the thrill of survival, and the unspoken connection that had grown between them.

But even as their kiss deepened, the shadows of the forest shifted. More hunters emerged, their footsteps soft but deliberate, ready for the next assault.

Lucien broke the kiss, his forehead resting against hers. "Hold onto me. We fight together."

Ava nodded, energy crackling from her hands. "Together."

And with that, the forest erupted once more into chaos, golden light clashing with the darkness, love and danger intertwined.
