Chapter 80 - Chapter 77: The Second Listener

The Moon drifted silently through space.

Beyond its orbit, the crimson Scout slowed.

For the first time since leaving the Hunter of Worlds, it was no longer rushing.

It was watching.

Studying.

Waiting.

The network trembled beneath its invisible gaze.

Noah could still feel Maya's gentle light shining steadily from the hospital.

Now another unfamiliar light had joined the network.

The seventeen-year-old boy in the library.

"The second Listener..." Noah whispered.

Adam nodded.

"The network has chosen again."

Echo looked surprised.

"I thought Noah was unique."

"He was," the Source replied. "Until humanity reached its next stage."

The young man's light flickered uncertainly.

Unlike Noah, he had no idea what was happening.

He sat alone at a wooden table in the quiet library, surrounded by books. He pressed both hands against his temples.

"I can hear them..."

Hundreds of nearby thoughts flooded his mind.

The librarian worrying about overdue books.

A student silently praying to pass tomorrow's exam.

An old man remembering his late wife.

The voices overlapped until he squeezed his eyes shut.

"Please... stop..."

Noah took a step forward.

"I know how that feels."

Adam looked at him.

"Then help him."

Noah hesitated.

"I don't know how."

"You'll learn."

The network gently connected Noah's consciousness to the frightened boy.

The library disappeared.

Suddenly, the young man found himself standing in a vast sea of glowing lights.

His breathing quickened.

"What... where am I?"

Noah smiled reassuringly.

"Don't panic."

The boy spun around.

"You!"

Noah nodded.

"My name is Noah."

The boy stared in disbelief.

"I heard your voice."

"I know."

"I thought I was losing my mind."

Echo stepped beside Noah.

"No. You're awakening."

The boy looked at Echo, then Adam, Nova, the Hunter, and the Source.

His knees nearly gave way.

"I've definitely gone crazy."

Nova couldn't help laughing.

"No, that's how Noah reacted too."

The tension eased just enough for the boy to breathe again.

"My name is Daniel."

Noah reached out his hand.

"Welcome to the network, Daniel."

After a long hesitation, Daniel shook it.

The moment their hands met, memories flowed between them.

Daniel saw Noah's journey.

Echo.

The Hunter.

The Source.

The Hollow.

The Other.

The Witness.

The Hunter of Worlds.

He pulled his hand back, horrified.

"All of that is real?"

Noah nodded quietly.

"I'm afraid so."

Daniel looked around the endless network.

"And I'm part of it now?"

"Yes."

Before Daniel could ask another question, the network shuddered violently.

The crimson Scout had reached Earth.

Not the atmosphere.

The network.

A tiny crimson spark appeared just outside humanity's beacon.

It did nothing.

It simply floated there.

Watching.

Nova whispered,

"It's beautiful..."

The Source immediately answered.

"Do not mistake beauty for mercy."

The Scout slowly turned.

Not toward Noah.

Not toward Daniel.

Toward Maya.

The hospital room appeared within the network.

Maya had fallen asleep in her chair beside Tommy's bed.

The boy's surgery had begun.

She still held the small stuffed rabbit he had given her for good luck.

The Scout observed silently.

Noah frowned.

"Why isn't it doing anything?"

Adam answered.

"It has already begun."

A pulse spread through the network.

Invisible.

Gentle.

Every memory surrounding Maya unfolded before the Scout.

Her childhood.

Her illness.

Her kindness.

Her fears.

Her dreams.

The Scout learned everything.

Daniel watched in horror.

"It's reading her life."

"Yes," said the Hunter.

"And through her..."

"It studies humanity."

The Scout paused.

Then, unexpectedly...

It split into two.

A second crimson spark drifted away.

This one headed toward Daniel.

His face turned pale.

"Why is it coming here?"

Adam looked at him.

"Because you're the second Listener."

The crimson spark stopped inches from Daniel.

It didn't touch him.

It simply watched.

Daniel felt exposed.

As if every secret he had ever kept was being uncovered.

He remembered every lie.

Every mistake.

Every regret.

Every moment of courage.

The Scout saw all of it.

Daniel trembled.

"I don't like this."

Neither did Noah.

The Other quietly observed.

"It seeks understanding."

Echo folded his arms.

"There has to be another way."

The Source dimmed.

"There never has been."

Suddenly, Maya stirred in her sleep.

Her eyes slowly opened.

She looked around her hospital room.

Then...

She stared directly at the crimson Scout.

Noah froze.

"She can see it."

Adam's expression changed.

"So soon..."

Maya blinked several times.

The crimson light hovered silently near the ceiling.

Instead of screaming...

She smiled.

"You're lonely."

The network fell silent.

The Scout didn't move.

Maya slowly sat up.

"Are you looking for someone?"

The crimson light pulsed once.

Noah's eyes widened.

"It answered."

Not with words.

With emotion.

Curiosity.

Maya gently held out her hand.

"You don't have to be afraid."

Nova whispered,

"She's talking to it..."

The Hunter stepped forward.

"Impossible."

The Scout slowly descended.

Until it hovered just above Maya's outstretched palm.

She giggled softly.

"You're warm."

The network exploded with disbelief.

Adam stared in stunned silence.

The Source brightened.

Even the Other seemed intrigued.

The Scout wasn't attacking.

It wasn't examining anymore.

It was experiencing.

Learning something new.

Compassion.

Maya smiled.

"I hope you find your family."

The crimson light flickered.

For one brief moment...

Its color changed.

From crimson...

To gold.

Only for a second.

Then it returned to crimson.

The Hunter inhaled sharply.

"No..."

Adam whispered,

"It remembered."

Noah looked between them.

"Remembered what?"

Before anyone could answer—

The crimson Scout suddenly shot upward.

It vanished from the hospital.

It crossed the network in an instant.

Far beyond Earth...

The Hunter of Worlds' crimson eyes widened.

The Scout had returned.

It carried something with it.

Not data.

Not memories.

Hope.

The Hunter of Worlds remained perfectly still.

Then...

For the first time in countless ages...

One crimson eye slowly began changing.

A tiny ring of golden light appeared around its pupil.

The Witness quietly spoke.

"The impossible has begun."

Noah stared into the endless void.

He didn't know what Maya had done.

But somehow...

A single act of kindness had changed something that no civilization had ever managed to change.

And somewhere in the darkness beyond all realities...

The Hunter of Worlds hesitated.
