Chapter 4 - Chapter 4: The Geometry of Death

The goblin grunted, a guttural sound of dull satisfaction, as it snatched up Kaelen's freshly shed skin. It began to stuff the translucent, copper-veined husk into a crude leather pouch tied to its waist.

Kaelen remained frozen against the dark bark of the root cave, his mind working at a furious pace. He was a Level 2 snake weighing perhaps three pounds. The goblin was a bipedal, armored humanoid wielding a spear. A direct physical confrontation was out of the question.

If I cannot overpower the piece on the board, Kaelen thought, his slit pupils narrowing, I must change the board itself.

He scanned his immediate environment, searching for a tactical advantage. His eyes traced the thick, rotting roots of the ancient oak above the goblin. Clustered near a precarious, overhanging deadwood branch were several bulbous, violently purple fungi. Kaelen had noticed them earlier when he first hatched; they emitted a faint, acrid smell, and the native insects instinctively avoided them.

Volatile spores, he deduced. Nature's own area-of-effect weapon.

The goblin, satisfied with its prize, turned its head, its beady black eyes scanning the underbrush for the snake that had left the skin behind. It took a heavy step forward, right beneath the overhanging branch.

Kaelen didn't hesitate. He engaged his [Camouflage Lvl 1], blending his copper-threaded scales into the shadows of the rotting wood, and slithered rapidly up the trunk. His new, heavier scales provided excellent traction.

He positioned himself on the deadwood branch, directly above the cluster of purple fungi. Below him, the goblin sniffed the air, gripping its stone spear tightly.

Kaelen coiled his lower body tightly around the branch, anchoring himself. He took a deep, silent breath, calculating the angle and the required force. Then, like a coiled spring suddenly released, he whipped the upper half of his body downward, using his snout like a battering ram.

He struck the largest of the purple fungi with a sharp thwack.

The result was immediate and violent. The fungus ruptured with a loud, wet pop, setting off a chain reaction among the cluster. A dense cloud of caustic, deep-purple spores exploded downward, cascading directly over the goblin.

The creature let out a high-pitched, gargling shriek. The spores clung to its moist eyes and the mucous membranes of its nose and mouth. It dropped its spear instantly, both clawed hands flying to its face as it thrashed blindly, choking and tearing at its own skin in agony.

Check, Kaelen thought coldly. And mate.

Kaelen didn't wait for the spore cloud to settle. He activated his [Heat Sense Lvl 1]. The world shifted to a dark canvas, the goblin appearing as a flailing mass of bright red and yellow heat. Kaelen isolated a vivid, pulsing line of intense heat on the side of the goblin's thick neck—the jugular vein.

He uncoiled from the branch and dropped into the purple haze.

Gravity accelerated his fall. He opened his jaws wide, the newly formed copper-threaded muscles in his jaw snapping taut. He hit the goblin squarely on the side of the neck, driving his tiny, needle-like fangs deep into the pulsing vein.

The goblin let out one final, muffled gurgle. Kaelen's fangs weren't long, but his aim was surgically precise. He hit the major artery, and the goblin's frantic heart rate did the rest of the work, pumping its own lifeblood out into the dirt.

The creature's knees buckled. It collapsed heavily onto the moss, twitching for a few moments before going entirely still.

Kaelen detached himself, slithering back a few feet, panting heavily. The purple spores were settling, leaving a stinging sensation on his own scales, but his new [Minor Carapace Lvl 1] protected him from the worst of the caustic effects.

A cacophony of chimes erupted in his mind, and the translucent blue screen materialized, flashing rapidly.

[Incredible Feat! Host has defeated an enemy vastly superior in level and species ranking.] [Enemy Defeated: Forest Scavenger Goblin (Level 6)] [Experience Gained: 150 EXP] [Level Up! You are now Level 3.] [Level Up! You are now Level 4.] [Level Up! You are now Level 5.]

A tremendous surge of energy washed over Kaelen, forcing him to coil tightly as his muscles expanded and his body grew nearly a full foot in length. His copper veins glowed faintly before settling into a permanent, metallic sheen against his emerald scales.

But the System wasn't finished.

[Milestone Reached: Level 5.] [Analyzing Host Combat Data... Tactical application of toxins detected.] [Mana Core Unlocked. You now have access to Mana.] [Skill Acquired: Basic Venom Synthesis (Lvl 1) - Host can now convert Mana into a localized paralytic toxin within the fangs.]

Kaelen stared at the final notification, a cold, predatory satisfaction washing over him. He was no longer just a physical creature relying on gravity and geometry. He had unlocked the fundamental power of this world. He was a creature of magic.

He looked at the dead goblin, then toward the darker, deeper parts of the Verdant Labyrinth. The game had truly begun.
