Chapter 46 - Chp 46

One month later.

Shinji stood in the center of the rocky plateau, breathing slowly, carefully controlling the rhythm of his lungs.

Around him, the trees rustled. Three weeks ago he would have spun around the moment he felt movement.

Now he waited.

The first monkey dropped from the branches above. Shinji moved before it even landed.

He stepped forward and drove a palm strike into its chest, redirecting the attack rather than meeting it head-on. The monkey flipped backward through the air and landed lightly on a branch.

A second came from behind.

Shinji ducked under the incoming kick and swept its legs out from under it.

A third tried to grab him from the side.

Shinji twisted his body, broke the grip, and threw the monkey over his shoulder.

He landed lightly in a crouch.

Then a slow clap echoed from the rocks. "Well well," a familiar voice said.

Shinji looked up. Kenta sat on a branch above him, tail swinging lazily.

"You lasted almost three seconds this time."

Shinji wiped sweat from his forehead. "Four."

Kenta grinned. "Three and a half."

More monkeys appeared along the surrounding branches. For the past month, Shinji had done nothing but fight them.

The first week he barely lasted seconds. The second week he started surviving. Now he could actually fight back.

Kenta hopped down from the tree and landed in front of him. "You're improving," the monkey admitted.

Shinji raised an eyebrow. "That almost sounded like a compliment."

Kenta jabbed him in the ribs. "Don't get cocky."

From the edge of the clearing, a familiar voice spoke. "That's enough for today."

Both Shinji and Kenta looked over. Hiruzen Sarutobi stood at the edge of the plateau. Shinji straightened slightly.

Even after a month of brutal training, Hiruzen still looked completely relaxed. Like none of this effort meant anything.

Kenta scratched his chin. "Your kid's getting tougher."

Hiruzen nodded slightly. "He has potential."

The monkey snorted. "That's not the question."

Kenta turned and looked directly at Shinji. "The question is whether he's worth the contract."

Shinji met his gaze calmly. "I'm still here."

Kenta grinned. "Fair point."

Then the monkey hopped onto a nearby rock. "Well, lucky for you…"

His grin widened. "the old man wants to introduce you to someone."

Shinji frowned slightly. "…Someone?"

Every monkey in the trees suddenly went silent. Even Kenta stopped grinning. A massive figure stepped into the clearing.

Shinji's eyes widened slightly. The monkey standing before him was enormous. Nearly twice his height.

Broad shoulders. Thick dark fur.

Hiruzen stepped forward slightly. His voice carried a rare note of respect. "Lord Enma."

Shinji blinked. Enma. The Monkey King. Hiruzen's legendary summon.

The giant monkey studied Shinji silently.

Then Enma crossed his arms. "So." "This is the boy."

Shinji straightened instinctively.

Enma's eyes narrowed slightly. "You're the one who fought Orochimaru."

Shinji nodded. "Yes."

The Monkey King stepped closer. "You survived."

"Yes."

Enma studied him carefully. Then he glanced briefly at Hiruzen. "You believe he carries the Will of Fire."

Hiruzen nodded once. "I do."

Enma looked back at Shinji.

"Why?"

The question caught him slightly off guard. "Why what?"

"Why did you fight Orochimaru?"

Shinji thought about the moment again. The realization that running meant leaving someone behind.

He answered simply.

"He would have my little brother."

Enma slowly nodded.

"I see."

He turned slightly, pacing once across the clearing.

"The Will of Fire is often misunderstood."

"Many shinobi claim they protect the village." "But few are willing to die for the next generation."

He stopped and looked back at Shinji. "You were."

Shinji met his gaze without hesitation.

Enma studied him for another moment.

Then he sighed.

"You remind me of someone."

Shinji blinked.

"…Who?"

Enma glanced briefly toward Hiruzen. "This stubborn fool."

Kenta laughed loudly from the rocks. "Yeah that tracks."

Hiruzen shook his head slightly but said nothing.

Enma stepped closer again. Now Shinji could feel the full weight of his presence.

"You have spirit."

The Monkey King's voice hardened slightly. "But spirit alone does not earn a contract."

Shinji nodded. "I figured."

Enma's eyes glinted slightly. "Good."

Then suddenly. The Monkey King swung. Shinji barely raised his arms in time. The impact launched him across the clearing. He crashed into the dirt and rolled twice before stopping.

Shinji forced himself back to his feet. Kenta burst out laughing. "Welcome to the real test!"

Enma stood calmly in the center of the clearing. "You've been sparring with children." The Monkey King slowly lowered his fists. "Now you fight a king."

Shinji wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. His arms were already shaking.

"Sensei."

Hiruzen stood quietly at the edge of the clearing. "You wanted to earn the contract."

"Show him."

Shinji exhaled slowly. Then he stepped forward. Chakra flared through his body.

Across from him, the Monkey King smiled faintly. "Good."

The mountain echoed with the sound of their clash.

Chp 46.

The first hit nearly broke his guard.

Shinji slid backward across the stone, boots scraping against the ground as he forced himself to stop. Across the clearing, Enma stood exactly where he had been a moment ago.

The Monkey King hadn't even shifted his stance. Shinji rolled his shoulders slowly, trying to shake the numbness out of his arms.

Around the clearing, the monkeys watched silently. Because this wasn't the same sparring Shinji had been doing for the past month.

From the edge of the clearing, Hiruzen Sarutobi observed quietly.

Enma spoke again, his deep voice calm. "You've improved."

Before Shinji could respond Enma moved. Shinji reacted instantly. He pivoted and raised his guard just as Enma's fist came crashing down. The impact slammed through his defense and launched him across the clearing again.

He hit the ground hard and rolled. Shinji pushed himself up quickly. Enma stood twenty feet away now.

"You hesitate," the Monkey King said.

"I'm thinking."

"You're surviving."

Enma crossed his arms. "But you are not fighting."

For the past minute he had done nothing but react.

Because deep down he knew I can't beat him. The difference in strength was overwhelming.

Shinji stepped forward again. Enma watched him curiously. "You understand the difference between us." "Yes."

Shinji dropped into a stance.

Then Enma smiled slightly.

"Good."

This time Shinji attacked first. The moment Enma reappeared, Shinji stepped into him instead of retreating. A punch drove toward Enma's ribs. Enma blocked easily. But Shinji had expected that. He twisted his body and swept low with his leg. The Monkey King hopped lightly over the sweep. But Shinji followed through with an elbow strike. Enma caught it. Then drove a palm strike into Shinji's chest.

Shinji flew backward again. But this time he landed on his feet.

Across the clearing, Kenta leaned forward on his rock. "Oh?"

Enma studied him carefully. "You've stopped trying to survive."

Shinji nodded. "Yeah."

"Why?"

"Because surviving won't earn the contract."

For the first time since the fight began, Enma laughed. "You're learning."

"Show me your fire."

Enma attacked. This time the clearing shook with the force of their clash. Shinji attacked relentlessly. Every strike aimed with everything he had. Several times Shinji was thrown across the clearing again. But every time he got back up faster.

Shinji's breathing grew heavier. His movements slower. But he kept fighting.

Enma stood over him. "You're finished."

Enma watched him silently. "You cannot defeat me."

"Then why stand?"

Shinji wiped dirt from his face. His voice was hoarse now. "Because the test isn't winning." He forced himself upright. "It's whether I quit."

"That is correct."

"The test is over."

Shinji blinked "What?"

Kenta burst out laughing from the rocks. "Congratulations, kid."

Shinji looked around in confusion. "I lost."

Enma glanced over his shoulder. "You were never expected to win."

The Monkey King walked toward the center of the clearing. "The contract is not given to the strongest shinobi." "It is given to those who possess the will to stand again."

Shinji slowly realized what had happened. The fight had never been about victory. It had been about resolve. Enma crossed his arms.

"You fought Orochimaru knowing you would likely die."

The Monkey King's voice softened slightly. "You fought today knowing you could not win."

"That is the Will of Fire."

From the edge of the clearing, Hiruzen stepped forward. Shinji could see the faint pride in his eyes.

Enma gestured toward the shrine at the edge of the plateau. "The scroll awaits."

Shinji stared for a moment. Then slowly walked toward it. The massive contract scroll lay across the stone altar. Shinji bit his thumb. He pressed his hand onto the scroll. Then wrote his name beneath Hiruzen's.

The moment the ink settled A pulse of chakra rippled through the mountain.

Kenta grinned. "Well look at that."

Enma nodded approvingly. "The pact is complete."

"Now what?"

Kenta laughed. "You summon us, idiot."

Shinji frowned slightly. "Oh."

Hiruzen chuckled quietly. "Go ahead."

Shinji formed the hand seals carefully.

Boar.

Dog.

Monkey.

He slammed his hand onto the ground. "Summoning Jutsu!" Smoke exploded across the clearing. The monkeys leaned forward eagerly.

When the smoke cleared A small monkey sat in the center of the summoning circle.

It blinked up at Shinji.

Then scratched its head.

"Oh."

Kenta immediately fell over laughing. "You summoned a toddler!"

The tiny monkey glared up at Shinji.

"Hey!"

Shinji stared down at it. "Sorry."

From the side, Enma chuckled quietly.

"It appears your journey has just begun."
