Chapter 2 - The Morning After Everything

She didn't sleep.

She sat in the back of Salim's car — he'd arrived within twelve minutes of her call, which told her he'd been awake, which told her he'd been worried, which told her she'd been right to trust him — and she watched Mumbai come apart at the edges the way it did in the hours before dawn, the city softening just slightly, the traffic thinning, the sky above the smog going a bruised and reluctant purple.

Salim hadn't said much. He'd looked at her when she got in, assessed her face the way he used to assess her father's, catalogued what he found there, and driven. She was grateful for it. She didn't have language for tonight yet. Language required distance, and she was still inside it, could still feel the glass on her arms, still feel his hand.

Stop, she told herself.

She looked at her phone instead. The unknown number remained disconnected. She'd screenshot it, sent it to herself three times, like that would make it mean something.

Stop the meeting. Leave the building now. They know where you are.

Someone had known she was in danger before the bullet. Which meant someone was watching Suri's people. Which meant there was a third player she hadn't accounted for, and in her father's world — her world now, she supposed, god help her — unaccounted-for players got you killed.

"Salim," she said.

"Haan, didi." He'd called her that since she was twelve. Sister. She'd stopped correcting him somewhere around year three.

"Who else knew about tonight's meeting?"

A pause. "Only me. And Tiwari."

"Not Tiwari," she said. He was too old and too careful and had too much to lose. "Who knew on Volkov's side?"

"Difficult to say. He's — " Salim chose his words carefully. "He runs a tight operation. Not a loose man."

She'd noticed that. She'd noticed quite a lot of things about Aleksei Volkov in the alley behind Raakh that she had no intention of examining until she'd slept and eaten and dealt with the bullet hole in her wall.

"Find out who tipped us off," she said. "Quietly."

"And Volkov? You trust him?"

She considered the question with the seriousness it deserved. Did she trust a man she'd met ninety minutes ago, who had been in business with her father in ways she didn't yet understand, who had put himself between her and a bullet with the reflexes of someone who'd done it before?

"No," she said. "But I trust that he needs me functional. For now, that's enough."

Salim made a sound that suggested he had opinions about this and was too wise to voice them.

Good. She had enough opinions of her own.

Her apartment was in Bandra, three floors above a bakery that started at 5 a.m., and she'd always loved the smell of it — bread and cardamom, something fundamentally kind about it. She noticed tonight that it didn't comfort her the way it usually did. The world had shifted six degrees and everything in it was the same except completely different.

She showered. She stood under water as hot as she could stand it and she let herself shake — just for a minute, just here, just privately — and then she turned the water cold and stood in that too, until the shaking stopped.

She wrapped herself in a towel and stood in her bathroom looking at her own face.

Her mother's face. Everyone said so. Same wide eyes, same jaw with the slight stubborn set to it, same dark hair currently dripping on her shoulders. Her mother, who had died when Zara was nine and left a silence in the house that her father had spent the rest of his life trying to fill. Her mother, who had apparently known nothing about the parts of Farrukh Merchant that the sea had eventually caught up with.

"Alright," Zara said to her reflection. Not a question.

She got dressed. She made chai. She sat at her kitchen table with her laptop and her father's folder and she started, methodically, to map everything she knew.

By the time the sky went fully light, she had two pages of notes, four questions she didn't have answers to, and a name at the center of everything, circled three times in red.

Vikram Suri.

Her phone rang at 7:14 a.m. Unknown number. Her chest seized —

Then a message, one second later, from the same number: It's Volkov. I'm outside your building.

She stared at the message. Then she typed: How do you know where I live.

Your father told me. Are you going to let me in or should I stand here until your neighbors call the police.

She looked at the ceiling. She looked at herself, in yesterday's clothes, hair damp, no makeup, the table behind her covered in classified documents about her dead father's criminal empire.

Of course he was outside her building at 7 a.m.

Of course.

She buzzed him in.

She had approximately forty-five seconds while he climbed the stairs. She used them. She stacked the papers into the folder, changed her kurta, ran a hand through her damp hair, put the chai on, and was standing at her kitchen counter looking composed by the time he knocked.

She opened the door.

He looked — unexpectedly human, was the first thought. He'd lost the jacket. White shirt, sleeves pushed to the forearms, the kind of watch that cost more than her first car. He'd been awake all night too, she could see it — not in any conventional way, no obvious exhaustion, but something behind his eyes that was running faster than his face was letting on.

He looked at her for a moment that went one beat longer than it needed to.

"You changed," he said.

"You're observant. Come in."

He came in. He looked at her apartment the way he'd looked at Raakh — a quick, thorough sweep that wasn't tourism, it was assessment — and then his eyes landed on her kitchen table, where she'd stacked the folder, and she watched him notice that she'd been working.

"Chai?" she said.

He looked mildly surprised. "Please."

She poured two cups and brought them to the table and sat, which forced him to either sit across from her or stand awkwardly in her kitchen, and he sat, and they were suddenly very close in the small morning light, and she was extremely aware that she hadn't slept and her hair was still slightly damp and there were bullet holes in her bar and he smelled like — something cool and expensive that her tired brain couldn't properly categorize.

Stop that.

"You found out who the shooter was," she said. Not a question.

"Yes." He curled both hands around the chai glass. His hands were — she looked at her own cup. "One of Suri's men. Contract. Not local."

"He brought in outside talent." That was significant. "He's worried about exposure."

"Or he's careful." Volkov looked at her. "Miss Merchant—"

"Zara," she said. "If we're going to do this, the formality is going to get exhausting."

A pause. Something shifted in his expression, small and quick. "Zara." The way he said it, the slight weight his accent put on the first syllable — she made a note to feel something about that later. "The shooter was a warning. Not a serious attempt."

"He fired twice."

"He missed twice. From that distance, with that sightline, a competent man doesn't miss unless he means to." Volkov's voice was very even. "Suri wanted you rattled. He wanted you running to someone for protection. He wanted to see who you'd run to."

She sat with that. "He wanted to identify my alliances."

"Before he moves against them."

"So he's watching us right now."

"Almost certainly."

She looked at the table. At the chai. At the pale morning light coming through her window. Somewhere downstairs the bakery was going and the whole building smelled of cardamom.

"Then we give him something to watch," she said.

Volkov said nothing. He was doing that thing again, that still, focused thing, like she was a problem he was interested in solving.

"You said you'd introduce me to the people I need to know," she said. "Who's first?"

"There's a man named Dawood Mistry. He controls distribution through the eastern suburbs — Kurla, Ghatkopar, Mulund. He was loyal to your father because your father once did him a significant favor, the details of which I'll tell you later. He's been neutral since Farrukh's death but he won't stay neutral long. Suri's already made an approach."

"When can I meet him?"

"Tonight, ideally. Before Suri's offer crystallizes." Volkov tilted his head slightly. "There's a dinner. Private. He attends every week. I can get us in."

Us. She noticed the word. She suspected he'd used it deliberately and she was equally suspicious of how little she minded.

"What's the dress code," she said.

"It's Mumbai. Extravagant."

"I can do extravagant." She stood, picked up both chai glasses, took them to the sink. She could feel him watching her and she allowed herself, privately, a single second of being aware of it — warmly, specifically aware of it — and then she put it away. "There's something else."

"Yes?"

She turned. He was still sitting at her table, in the morning light, completely at ease in her kitchen in a way that should have annoyed her and landed somewhere slightly different, and she held his gaze because she'd decided that was the only way to handle this particular man.

"The message," she said. "Last night. Someone on Suri's payroll warned me."

Something sharpened in his eyes. She'd surprised him. Good.

"You traced it."

"Not yet. But I will." She crossed her arms. "Does that change anything for you?"

He was quiet for a moment. "It means Suri's operation isn't clean. Someone inside is running their own agenda." He paused. "It also means someone wants you alive, which is — notable."

"Touching, really."

The corner of his mouth moved. Just barely. Just enough that she clocked it and stored it involuntarily, like her brain had decided to start cataloguing things about his face without consulting her first.

"I'll have a car here at nine," he said, standing. He was tall in her kitchen — somehow taller than he'd been in Raakh, in the way that some people expanded in smaller spaces and some people contracted. He expanded. "The dinner starts at ten. We should arrive late."

"Powerful people always arrive late."

"Powerful people," he said, "or people who want to be perceived as powerful."

"Tonight we want to be perceived as both."

He looked at her for a moment. That look — unguarded, just for a flash, the look of a man who was recalculating something and didn't love the result.

"There's something you should know," he said. "About tonight."

"Tell me."

"Mistry is old-fashioned. The way your father's generation was old-fashioned." He seemed to choose his next words carefully. "He will respect that you are Farrukh's daughter. He will not immediately respect that you are his successor. The way we handle that — "

"The way I handle that," she said pleasantly.

A pause. "The way you handle that," he conceded, "will determine whether he stays neutral or moves against us. There is very little room for error."

She looked at him steadily. "Is that your way of asking if I'm ready?"

"It's my way of telling you the stakes."

"I know the stakes," she said. "My father is dead, Mr. Volkov. I know exactly what the stakes are."

Something moved across his face — quick, almost involuntary. Something that in the morning light looked very much like the same grief she'd been carrying for eleven days, and she hadn't expected that, hadn't expected to recognize it, and it disarmed her in a way she would have preferred it didn't.

He looked away first. He picked up his jacket from the back of the chair and moved toward the door, and she followed, and he stopped in her doorway and turned, which meant they were close — closer than necessary, the door frame doing its part — and he looked down at her with that grey gaze and she looked up at him and said nothing because there was nothing to say.

"Nine o'clock," he said.

"I'll be ready."

He left. She listened to his footsteps on the stairs and then the distant close of the building door, and then she leaned her back against her own wall and looked at her ceiling and allowed herself exactly three seconds of acknowledging that she was in an extraordinary amount of trouble.

Not the kind with bullets. That kind she could handle.

The other kind.

Three seconds. Then she pushed off the wall and went to call Diya.

"A what happened to my bar?!"

Diya's voice at 8 a.m. on four hours of sleep hit a frequency that Zara was fairly certain broke glass. Which was perhaps appropriate.

"A small structural incident," Zara said, phone tucked between her shoulder and ear while she wrote three things on a notepad simultaneously. "Nothing structural. One window, one wall."

"One wall. Zara. Zara, I can see from the door that there is a — this is a bullet hole."

"Yes."

"There are bullet holes in Raakh."

"One bullet hole," Zara said. "Singular. Have maintenance come in. Tell them it was a — " she thought briefly "— a very aggressive drunk."

A silence that contained an entire lifetime of feelings.

"I need you to trust me," Zara said, more quietly.

Diya had been her friend since university. Since a rainy afternoon in a Bandra chai shop when they'd been strangers who both reached for the last copy of the same novel and had somehow ended up talking for four hours. She knew Zara the way people knew you when they'd held your hair back and lent you money and sat on your kitchen floor with you at 2 a.m. She knew things no one else knew.

"You know I trust you," Diya said. "But Zara — "

"I'll explain everything. Not on the phone."

"Tonight."

"Tomorrow. I have something tonight."

"What do you have tonight."

"A dinner."

Another silence. "With who?"

"A business associate."

"Which business associate, because I know all of your — " a pause. Diya was frighteningly quick. "Is this about your father's — "

"Tomorrow," Zara said firmly.

"I'm going to need a very large drink for this conversation, aren't I."

"I'll buy you two."

"Four."

"Three."

"Done." She could hear Diya already moving, already problem-solving, the sound of heels on Raakh's floor. That was the thing about Diya — she didn't stop. She adjusted and moved. "The window will be fixed by tonight. I'll tell the staff it was an accident during deliveries. But Zara — " her voice dropped — "be careful. Please."

"I'm always careful."

"You're never careful," Diya said, with the weary authority of fifteen years. "You're confident, which is not the same thing."

Zara smiled. First time in eleven days. "I'll work on it."

She hung up. She looked at her notepad.

At the top she'd written: Vikram Suri.

Beneath it: The shooter missed on purpose.

Beneath that: Someone inside Suri's operation is running a different game.

And at the bottom, slightly apart from the rest, because her tired honest brain had put it there before she could stop it:

The look on his face when I said I knew the stakes.

She crossed that last line out. Twice.

The dress was emerald — deep green silk that her mother would have called the color of wanting something — and she wore it with gold at her ears and her mother's bangles at her wrist and heels that added three inches she didn't particularly need and her father's fury somewhere beneath her sternum where it had been quietly burning since the night they'd identified him under those blue-white lights.

She was ready at 8:47 and she spent thirteen minutes doing nothing because she refused to look like she'd been waiting.

The knock came at exactly nine.

She opened the door.

Aleksei Volkov in the daytime was one thing. Aleksei Volkov in a black suit at nine o'clock at night in her doorway was — a different problem entirely.

He looked at her and whatever he'd been about to say didn't happen.

The pause lasted approximately two seconds. She counted.

"You look — " he started.

"Ready," she said. "I look ready."

Something moved in his jaw. "Yes," he said. "You do."

She stepped out, pulled the door shut behind her, and walked past him toward the stairs. She heard him follow, and she was aware — acutely, inconveniently aware — of the precise distance between them in the stairwell, the way the space seemed smaller than it had that morning.

The car was black and unmarked, a driver she didn't recognize up front, and she slid in and Volkov got in after her and the door closed and Mumbai rushed past the windows and they were very close in the backseat and the silence between them was doing something she didn't have a word for.

"Tell me about Mistry," she said.

He told her. She listened with everything she had — ages, history, leverage points, the particular way he liked to be spoken to, the things that would insult him without him showing it, the things that would earn respect. She filed every detail. She asked three questions that made Volkov pause before answering, which she found satisfying.

They were almost there when he said, "One more thing."

"Hm."

"Mistry will ask how we know each other." He paused. "Not in those words. He'll approach it sideways. He'll ask how long we've been in business together."

"And what do we tell him?"

Volkov was looking out the window. "I thought we should agree on the story before we walk in."

"The truth," Zara said. "That you were in business with my father for three years, and now you're in business with me." She looked at him. "The truth is impressive enough. We don't need a story."

He turned from the window. They were close enough in the dark of the car that she could see the detail of his face — the scar at his collar, half-visible above his open top button, the line of his throat — and he looked at her with that careful focused gaze and said:

"Your father said you were formidable. I thought he was being sentimental."

"And now?"

The car slowed. They were here.

"Now," he said, "I think he was being accurate."

She held his gaze for one measured moment. Then she reached for the door.

"Then let's go be formidable," she said.

His hand landed on her arm — light, brief, barely there.

"Zara."

She stopped.

"Stay close to me tonight. Not because you need protection." He said it before she could object. "Because we need to look like a unified front, and Mistry will be watching the space between us as much as he listens to what we say."

She looked at his hand on her arm. He dropped it.

"How close?" she said.

And something in the air between them shifted — a degree, just one, just enough — and his eyes held hers in the dark of the car with an expression that was professionally neutral in every technical sense of the word and communicated something else entirely.

"Close enough," he said, "that he doesn't question it."

She got out of the car. He followed.

She felt his hand settle at the small of her back as they walked toward the entrance — light, steady, correct — and she kept her chin up and her face composed and her eyes moving, cataloguing the room beyond the glass doors.

She was the daughter of Farrukh Merchant.

She was the owner of Raakh.

She was a woman with a bullet hole in her wall and a dead father and a Russian who smelled expensive and stood too close and looked at her like she was a language he was trying to learn, and she had approximately four hours to make a dangerous old man believe she was worth betting his future on.

She was not afraid.

She was absolutely, completely, exhilaratingly afraid.

Same thing, her father used to say. Same thing, jaanu. Courage is just fear that decided to move.

She moved.

They were three steps into the room when Zara saw him.

Across the party. Black sherwani, a drink in his hand, his beautiful manufactured smile aimed at someone she didn't recognize.

Vikram Suri.

Looking, in the very next moment, directly at her.

He raised his glass.

She smiled back — wide, warm, the smile she'd inherited from her father, the one that gave nothing away — and felt, beneath the green silk and the gold bangles and the hand still warm at the small of her back, a cold and clarifying rage settle into her bones like a second skeleton.

Good, she thought. Let him look.

She leaned, very slightly, toward Aleksei — just enough — and said against his ear, quiet enough for no one else:

"Suri's here."

She felt him go still. Just for a second. Then:

"I know," he said. "He was invited."

She pulled back enough to look at him. His face was close and unreadable. "By Mistry?"

"By me."

The cold in her bones went colder. "Why."

His grey eyes held hers. "Because," he said, very quietly, "the best way to learn what your enemy knows is to put him in a room and watch him react to you."

She stared at him.

"You used me as bait," she said.

"I used us," he said. "Both of us. The reaction we need to watch isn't just his."

She became aware that her hand had found his lapel — she didn't remember reaching for it — and she was gripping the fabric in a way that could, from across the room, look like intimacy, and was in fact approximately six seconds from violence.

"If you ever," she said, very softly, "make a decision that involves my life without telling me — "

"It won't happen again."

"It absolutely will not," she agreed.

He looked at her hand on his lapel. Then at her face. Something moved through his expression — not quite remorse, not quite something else either, something in between that she didn't have the vocabulary for yet.

"I'm sorry," he said.

She released his jacket. She smoothed the fabric once, businesslike. She turned toward the room.

"After tonight," she said, "we establish some ground rules, you and I."

"Agreed."

"Starting with: I am not a variable in someone else's equation. Not yours. Not Suri's. Not anyone's."

"Understood."

"Good." She lifted her chin. Across the room, Suri was still watching. She could feel it. "Now put your hand back where it was and take me to meet Dawood Mistry."

A beat. Then his hand was warm at the small of her back again, and she felt him lean, just slightly, toward her ear.

"For what it's worth," he said, "Suri looked at you like a problem he doesn't know how to solve."

"He should," she said.

"He also," Volkov said, and something in his voice had changed, something quieter and less controlled, "looked at you like something he wants."

She felt that land in her chest. She didn't look at him.

"Then he's going to have a very frustrating evening," she said.

She walked forward. She felt, rather than saw, the moment Volkov's hand pressed — just slightly, just briefly, just once — a fraction more firmly against her back.

Like punctuation.

Like mine.

And the thing was — the deeply inconvenient, badly timed, entirely unwelcome thing was:

She didn't pull away.
