Chapter 23 - Forest-Born Designs

Mau's mornings began like clockwork—sunlight spilling through the canopy, birdsong vibrating through the mist, dew soaking her bare feet as she stepped onto the clearing.

But this morning was different.

A pile of leaves, bark, vines, and flowers lay before her—not for combat, not for healing—but for creation. Tay Eming leaned against a tree, arms crossed, eyes scanning.

"Today," he said, voice calm, "you make something entirely yours. Something that is not survival, not healing, not combat. But beauty."

Mau tilted her head, squinting at the scattered natural materials.

"Beauty?" she asked, smirking faintly. "You mean… not lethal?"

Tay Eming chuckled. "Let's see if you can still kill with elegance."

She rolled her eyes, kneeling and picking up the materials. Vines twisted easily between her fingers, leaves layered with unexpected symmetry, flowers pressed into patterns only her mind could conceive.

Her instincts guided her hand—lines flowed naturally, curves balanced yet daring. It was chaotic, but perfect.

Hours passed like minutes. Mau worked, humming softly, unaware Tay Eming watched with quiet fascination.

At one point, she paused, holding up a vine that had twisted into a near-perfect spiral. "This… feels like something I should know," she whispered, almost to herself.

Tay Eming raised a brow. "You do know. Deep down. Your hands remember before your mind does."

Her lips quirked into a small smile. "Maybe the forest didn't just save me… maybe it taught me to see differently."

By dusk, a small collection of designs lay on the ground: intricate patterns made entirely from forest materials. She ran her fingers over them, noting how natural textures merged with precise lines, raw yet refined.

Tay Eming nodded. "These… are good. Strong. They're you. Keep them. One day, someone will see what you've done and… understand."

Mau frowned. "Understand what?"

He only smiled, enigmatic as ever. "That beauty can survive anywhere—even in exile."
