Chapter 11 - Chapter 10: Edge of Darkness

The night air was thick with tension as Aanya and Rey crouched behind the shattered remains of the balcony door. The city beyond glimmered faintly, but the darkness here felt alive—hungry, waiting.

"They'll come back," Rey said quietly, his jaw tight. "And next time, they won't make mistakes."

Aanya's chest tightened. "Why me? Why is it always me?"

"Because you're the key," he said, his gaze locking onto hers. "And I'm not letting you fall—not now, not ever."

Her heart skipped. Every time he said it, she felt a pull she couldn't resist. She hated it. She didn't want to feel it. But the heat in his eyes, the weight of his presence… it was impossible to ignore.

Suddenly, a shadow moved across the hallway. Gunfire erupted. Rey shielded her instantly, moving like a predator. Aanya's world narrowed to his protective stance, the steady beat of her own pulse, and the realization: she was no longer just surviving—she was alive in his world, and that world was dangerous, intoxicating, and inescapable.

When the smoke cleared, Rey held her close, chest pressed to hers. "This isn't over," he whispered, voice rough.

She realized, with a shiver, that it was only just beginning. And the truth about her father's death, the betrayal around her, and the man standing before her… were all pieces of a game far deadlier than she could have imagined.
