Chapter 3 - A chance to prove himself.

Time didn't wait for Kofi.

Whether he understood his lessons or not… whether he passed or failed… life kept moving.

Before he knew it, his days in Junior High School were coming to an end.

The pressure became heavier.

Exams were approaching.

Final results would decide everything.

In class, the atmosphere had changed.

Students were more serious now. Less noise. More focus.

Everyone knew this was important.

Everyone… except Kofi.

He sat at his desk, staring at his books.

The same feeling returned.

Confusion.

Doubt.

Fear.

What if I fail again?

The thought refused to leave his mind.

He had struggled for years.

Nothing had changed.

Why would this be different?

One afternoon, after school, Kofi sat alone under a tree near the classroom.

His books were open, but he wasn't reading.

He was thinking.

"What's the point?" he muttered quietly.

"You won't know if you don't try."

Kofi looked up.

It was one of his teachers.

Standing a few steps away.

"I see you here every day," the teacher said, walking closer. "But your mind is not here."

Kofi looked down.

"I try, sir."

"I know you try," the teacher replied. "But trying without believing won't take you far."

Kofi stayed silent.

No one had ever said it like that before.

"You think you're not good enough, don't you?" the teacher asked.

Kofi didn't answer.

But his silence was enough.

The teacher sighed softly and sat beside him.

"Listen," he said. "Not everyone learns the same way. Some people understand quickly. Others take time."

He paused.

"But that doesn't mean they cannot succeed."

Kofi frowned slightly.

"Then why is it so hard for me?" he asked quietly.

The teacher looked at him.

"Because you've already decided that you can't," he said.

Those words hit harder than anything else.

"For the next few weeks," the teacher continued, "I want you to do something different."

Kofi listened.

"Stop thinking about failure. Focus on one thing at a time. One topic. One question. One step."

"One step…" Kofi repeated softly.

"Yes," the teacher said. "You don't need to be the best. Just be better than you were yesterday."

That night, Kofi couldn't sleep.

Not because of fear.

But because of something else.

A small feeling.

Something he hadn't felt in a long time.

Hope.

The Change

The next morning, Kofi woke up earlier than usual.

He sat with his books.

Not to rush through everything.

But to understand one thing.

Just one.

At first, it felt the same.

Confusing.

Slow.

Frustrating.

But he didn't stop.

He read the same line again.

And again.

And again.

Until…

Something clicked.

It was small.

Very small.

But it was there.

For the first time, something made sense.

Kofi leaned back slightly.

Surprised.

"I understand this…" he whispered.

It wasn't much.

But it was enough.

From that day on, he changed how he studied.

No rushing.

No pressure to know everything.

Just…

One step at a time.

The Exams

Weeks passed.

The exams arrived.

Kofi sat in the classroom, his heart beating fast.

The paper was placed in front of him.

He stared at it.

For a moment…

The old fear returned.

What if I fail again?

He took a deep breath.

Closed his eyes briefly.

Then remembered the teacher's words.

One step.

He opened his eyes.

Picked up his pen.

And started.

Question by question.

Step by step.

Not perfectly.

But differently.

When the exam ended, he put his pen down slowly.

He didn't know if he had passed.

But he knew one thing.

He had tried differently.

The Result

The day results were announced, the whole school gathered.

Students whispered.

Some confident.

Some nervous.

Kofi stood quietly.

His hands slightly cold.

Names were called.

Results announced.

Then—

"Kofi Mensah."

His heart skipped.

He stepped forward.

Took the paper.

And looked at it.

For a moment…

He didn't react.

Then his eyes widened slightly.

It wasn't perfect.

Not even close.

But it was good.

Better than anything he had ever achieved before.

Kofi stood there, staring at the paper.

Not saying anything.

Not moving.

For the first time in his life…

He felt something different.

Pride.
