POV: Evelyn
Evelyn didn't sleep.
Not really.
Every time she closed her eyes, she saw it again the rose on her car. Bright red. Fresh. Wrong.
And that note.
You can't run forever.
It sat on her bedside table now, folded neatly like it wasn't something that had crawled under her skin and refused to leave.
She turned her head slightly, staring at it in the dim light.
Her chest felt tight.
Heavy.
Like something was closing in.
Beside her, Lily slept.
Finally.
Curled up on her side, one small hand tucked under her cheek. Her breathing was soft, steady.
Peaceful.
Too peaceful for everything going on.
Evelyn watched her for a long moment.
Then she reached out, brushing her fingers lightly over Lily's hair.
"I won't let anything happen to you," she whispered.
Her voice was low.
Firm.
More promise than comfort.
Morning came too fast.
Evelyn moved through it like she was on autopilot.
Breakfast.
Getting Lily ready.
Packing her bag.
Normal things.
Routine.
But her mind wasn't in any of it.
It kept going back.
To the black SUV.
To Daniel's voice.
To that rose.
To that note.
And one thought kept repeating itself
This isn't random.
By the time she dropped Lily off, her patience was gone.
Whatever was happening…
Someone knew something.
And there was one person who had been around every single time something went wrong.
Bella.
Evelyn didn't call.
Didn't text.
She drove straight to Bella's place.
Her grip on the steering wheel tightened as she pulled up.
Her heart beat faster.
Not from fear.
From anger.
Bella opened the door almost immediately.
Like she had been expecting her.
"Evelyn?" she said, surprise soft in her voice. "You didn't call"
"We need to talk."
Bella blinked.
Then smiled.
That same warm, easy smile that used to make Evelyn feel safe.
"Of course," she said, stepping aside. "Come in."
The house smelled like vanilla.
Clean.
Calm.
Nothing out of place.
It made Evelyn uneasy.
Too perfect.
Too controlled.
Bella walked ahead, motioning toward the couch.
"Do you want tea?" she asked casually. "You look a bit"
"Stop."
Bella paused.
Turned slowly.
"What?"
Evelyn crossed her arms.
Her eyes sharp.
"Stop acting like everything is normal."
Bella frowned slightly.
"I don't understand"
"Yes, you do."
Silence fell between them.
Thick.
Heavy.
Bella's expression softened, concern flickering across her face.
"Evelyn… what's going on?"
Evelyn let out a short laugh.
Disbelieving.
"Really?" she said. "That's what you're going with?"
Bella tilted her head.
Confused.
Or pretending to be.
"I'm serious," she said. "You're scaring me a little."
Evelyn stepped closer.
Slow.
Measured.
"Appointments getting canceled without reason."
Bella's smile didn't move.
"People showing up where they shouldn't be."
Still nothing.
"And last night?" Evelyn continued, her voice tightening. "Someone followed me."
That did it.
Bella's eyes widened slightly.
"Followed you?" she repeated. "Evelyn, that's"
"Don't," Evelyn snapped. "Don't act surprised."
Silence again.
Bella studied her for a moment.
Then she sighed softly.
"Okay," she said. "You're clearly stressed. And I get it. With Lily and everything going on"
"This isn't stress."
Evelyn's voice cut through the room.
Sharp.
Certain.
"This is real."
Bella's expression shifted.
Just for a second.
So small most people wouldn't notice.
But Evelyn did.
And something inside her…
Cracked.
"You were at the hospital," Evelyn said quietly.
Bella didn't react.
"Yesterday," she added. "I saw you."
A beat.
Then Bella smiled again.
"Oh," she said lightly. "That. I was visiting someone."
Evelyn stared at her.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Then why were you talking to the nurse about my appointment?"
That smile faltered.
Barely.
But it did.
Bella recovered quickly.
Too quickly.
"I wasn't," she said.
A lie.
Clean.
Simple.
Effortless.
Evelyn felt it.
Right there in her chest.
A slow, sinking feeling.
"You're lying," she said.
Bella's eyes hardened for a split second.
Then softened again.
"I think you're overwhelmed," she replied gently. "You're dealing with a lot, Evelyn. It's understandable that—"
"Stop twisting this."
Evelyn's voice rose.
Her hands shaking now.
"You were there. You spoke to the nurse. My appointment got canceled right after. And then someone followed me."
She stepped closer.
Close enough to see every detail on Bella's face.
"Tell me I'm wrong."
Bella didn't answer.
For a moment…
They just stood there.
Looking at each other.
Years of friendship hanging in the balance.
Then Bella smiled again.
Soft.
Almost pitying.
"You're wrong," she said.
Something inside Evelyn broke.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Just… quietly.
Like a thread snapping.
She stepped back.
Slowly.
Nodding once.
"Okay," she said.
Bella relaxed slightly.
"Good," she murmured. "I was worried you were starting to—"
"I believe you."
Bella blinked.
"…what?"
Evelyn smiled.
But there was no warmth in it.
"I said I believe you."
Bella hesitated.
Something flickered in her eyes.
Suspicion.
Then
Satisfaction.
"See?" she said softly. "Everything's fine."
Evelyn nodded again.
But inside…
Nothing felt fine.
Not anymore.
She turned to leave.
But something caught her eye.
A piece of paper on the table.
Folded.
Neat.
Familiar.
Her steps slowed.
"Is that yours?" she asked casually.
Bella glanced over.
"Oh, that? Just notes."
Evelyn reached for it before she could stop herself.
Unfolded it.
Her breath caught.
The handwriting.
Her fingers tightened around the paper.
No.
That couldn't be
She had seen it before.
Somewhere.
Sometime.
Long ago.
Her mind raced.
Trying to place it.
Trying to remember.
But it slipped through her fingers like water.
"What is it?" Bella asked, her voice light.
Evelyn looked up slowly.
Studied her face.
Then looked back at the paper.
At the way the letters curved.
The way the strokes pressed slightly harder at the ends.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
But she couldn't place it.
"It's nothing," Evelyn said finally, folding it back.
She placed it down carefully.
Like it might burn her if she held it too long.
Bella watched her closely.
Too closely.
"You sure?" she asked.
Evelyn nodded.
"Yeah."
She turned and walked out.
Didn't look back.
Didn't say anything else.
But as she got into her car…
Her hands trembled again.
Her chest tight.
Her mind racing.
That handwriting.
Where had she seen it?
Why did it feel like it was right there
Just out of reach?
Her phone buzzed.
She flinched.
Looked down.
A message.
Unknown number.
Her breath hitched as she opened it.
A photo.
Her car.
From earlier.
The rose still on it.
And below it…
A message.
"You're starting to notice."
Evelyn's heart slammed against her ribs.
Her grip tightened around the phone.
Because now she knew one thing for sure
This wasn't just coincidence.
This wasn't just bad luck.
This was planned.
And someone very close to her…
Was involved.
Evelyn begins to suspect Bella but the note in familiar handwriting hints Daniel is closer than she realizes.
