Chapter 7 - The pain of reality

After that night…

Nothing felt the same.

⸻

Not because something dramatic happened.

But because something had been said that couldn't be taken back.

⸻

"I feel it too."

⸻

Those words stayed with Amara.

Echoing in her mind in the quiet moments.

In between lectures.

In the silence of her room.

⸻

But what hurt the most wasn't what he said.

It was what came after.

⸻

Distance.

⸻

Kieran changed.

Not suddenly.

Not obviously.

But enough for her to notice.

⸻

He stopped waiting for her after class.

Stopped sitting beside her every day.

Stopped texting as often.

⸻

And when he did talk to her…

It felt different.

Shorter.

Colder.

⸻

Like he was trying to undo something that had already happened.

⸻

At first, Amara told herself she was imagining it.

That maybe he was just busy.

That maybe she was overthinking.

⸻

But deep down…

She knew the truth.

⸻

He was pulling away.

⸻

"See? I warned you."

Tessa's voice broke through her thoughts one afternoon.

⸻

Amara sat quietly on her bed, her phone resting beside her.

⸻

"He's doing exactly what he always does," Tessa continued. "He gets close… then disappears."

⸻

Amara didn't respond immediately.

⸻

Because this time…

She didn't have anything to say.

⸻

"Maybe it's not like that," she said softly, though her voice lacked confidence.

⸻

Tessa sighed.

"Amara… look at what's happening."

⸻

And that was the problem.

⸻

She was looking.

And it hurt.

⸻

Later that day, Amara saw him again.

⸻

He was standing outside the cafeteria.

Surrounded by people.

Laughing.

Smiling.

⸻

Just like before.

⸻

Like nothing had changed.

⸻

Like they had never happened.

⸻

Her chest tightened.

⸻

For a moment, she just stood there, watching.

Trying to understand how someone could switch so easily.

⸻

Then…

She saw it.

⸻

A girl.

Standing close to him.

Too close.

⸻

He leaned slightly toward her, saying something that made her laugh.

⸻

And just like that…

Everything clicked.

⸻

This was who he was.

⸻

The same person everyone warned her about.

The same person she thought she was different from.

⸻

Her throat tightened.

⸻

"Amara?"

⸻

She turned slightly.

It was him.

⸻

Kieran.

⸻

For a brief second, their eyes met.

⸻

And in that moment…

Everything felt heavy.

⸻

There were so many things she wanted to say.

So many questions.

So much confusion.

⸻

But instead…

She just nodded.

⸻

"Hi," he said, like nothing was wrong.

⸻

That simple word hurt more than anything.

⸻

"Hi," she replied.

⸻

Silence.

⸻

The girl beside him glanced at Amara, then back at him.

⸻

"Are you coming?" she asked him softly.

⸻

Kieran hesitated.

Just for a second.

⸻

Then he nodded.

"Yeah."

⸻

And that was it.

⸻

No explanation.

No apology.

⸻

Nothing.

⸻

Amara stood there as they walked away together.

⸻

And for the first time since she met him…

She felt it.

⸻

The pain.

⸻

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

⸻

But quiet.

Deep.

⸻

The kind that settles in your chest and refuses to leave.

⸻

That night, she didn't cry.

⸻

She just lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.

⸻

Because sometimes…

Pain isn't loud.

⸻

Sometimes…

It's just empty.

⸻

Meanwhile, Kieran sat alone later that night.

⸻

The same room.

The same silence.

⸻

But something felt off.

⸻

He picked up his phone.

Opened her chat.

⸻

And stared at it.

⸻

His thumb hovered over the screen.

⸻

He could text her.

Explain.

Say something.

⸻

But he didn't.

⸻

Because he knew something she didn't.

⸻

And that truth made everything worse.

⸻

"I told you this would happen," he muttered to himself.

⸻

But even as he said it…

It didn't feel right.

⸻

Because for the first time…

Walking away didn't feel easy.

⸻

It felt like losing something he wasn't ready to lose.
