FATE (운명)

A Novel

Author's Note (Opening)

The title of this novel, Fate (운명), reflects the central theme that binds every moment within this story. It explores the idea that certain encounters, emotions, and connections are not merely coincidences, but part of a path that quietly unfolds over time.

This story follows two individuals whose lives cross repeatedly under circumstances that are sometimes gentle, sometimes painful, and sometimes beyond their control. Through their journey, fate is not presented as something that guarantees happiness or tragedy, but as a force that creates connection—while allowing human choices to shape what comes next.

As you read, you may find moments that feel inevitable, moments that feel fragile, and moments that feel deeply personal. These are the places where fate and choice meet.

This novel is not only about where the characters end up, but about how they arrive there—and what their experiences mean along the way.

Introduction

In the quiet hush of the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897), where silk robes whispered against polished wooden floors and secrets were buried beneath layers of tradition, lived a princess who was never meant to fall in love.

Princess Ye-jin was born into grace, discipline, and duty. From the moment she took her first breath, her life was no longer her own—it belonged to the court, to the throne, and to the rigid rules of a kingdom that valued honor above all.

And then there was Dae-hyun, a man born not into silk, but into steel. A royal bodyguard, trained to be silent, unseen, and unwavering. His life was bound by loyalty, not dreams.

They were never meant to meet as equals.

Never meant to speak beyond duty.

And certainly never meant to love.

Yet, beneath the pale glow of lanterns and the shadow of palace walls, fate had already written a story neither of them could escape.

Setting & Culture of Joseon

The story unfolds within the grand palace of Joseon—a world of strict hierarchy and deeply rooted traditions.

Hanbok (한복): Flowing garments worn by all, with colors representing status. Princess Ye-jin wore delicate pastel silks, embroidered with cranes and peonies—symbols of longevity and nobility.

Confucian Values: Society was governed by discipline, filial piety, and loyalty. Women, especially royal ones, were expected to be obedient, modest, and politically useful through marriage.

Court Etiquette: Every step, every word, even the angle of a bow had meaning. One mistake could ruin a family—or a life.

Royal Marriages: Love was irrelevant. Princesses were often married off to strengthen alliances.

Palace Life: Hidden behind high walls, filled with scholars, officials, court ladies, and guards. Beautiful—but suffocating.

Main Characters

•Princess Ye-jin

Gentle yet quietly strong. She is known for her kindness to servants and her love for poetry and moonlit gardens. Beneath her calm demeanor lies a heart that longs for freedom.

•Dae-hyun

A royal bodyguard of unmatched skill. Cold and disciplined on the outside, but deeply human within. He believes emotions are a weakness—until he meets her.

Side Characters

•Lady Soo-ryun

Ye-jin's closest companion and court lady. Clever, observant, and fiercely loyal. She often notices what others ignore—and fears what she cannot prevent.

•Prince Min-jae

Ye-jin's older brother. A crown prince burdened by expectations. Though he loves his sister, he chooses duty over her happiness.

•Minister Kang

A powerful and calculating official. He seeks to strengthen his influence by arranging Ye-jin's marriage to his son.

•Kang Seung-woo

The minister's son. Polite and well-educated, but emotionally distant. A man shaped by ambition rather than affection.

Opening Scene

The night air was cool, carrying the faint scent of plum blossoms through the palace garden.

Princess Ye-jin stood beneath a blooming tree, her fingers brushing against its fragile petals. The moonlight painted her in silver, making her seem almost unreal—like a dream the world would soon forget.

"Your Highness, it is not safe to be alone at this hour."

The voice came from behind.

She turned slowly.

There he stood—Dae-hyun. Straight-backed, expression unreadable, eyes lowered in respect. A shadow in human form.

"And yet," she said softly, "I am not alone."

For a brief moment, their eyes met.

And something shifted.

Dae-hyun quickly lowered his gaze. "My duty is to ensure your safety, not to accompany your thoughts."

A faint smile touched her lips. "Then stand there, and do your duty. I will stand here… and do mine."

"Your duty, Princess?"

"To feel something real."

Silence fell between them, heavier than any words.

From that night onward, the garden was no longer just a place of quiet reflection.

It became the beginning of something forbidden.

Tone of the Story

This novel will unfold slowly—like falling petals.

Moments of silence, glances that last too long, words left unsaid.

A love that grows not through grand confessions, but through presence.

And a tragedy not born from hatred…
