Chapter 9 - chapter 9

The forest was quieter than it should have been.

Even the wind seemed to hesitate.

Seraphina stood in the clearing, her fingers clenched slightly at her sides, her breathing uneven—not from exhaustion, but from anticipation.

She didn't turn around this time.

"…You're here," she said.

It wasn't a question.

Behind her, the shadows shifted.

Alex stepped forward, his presence calm, controlled… inevitable.

"I was," he replied.

A pause.

Then she turned.

Her eyes locked onto his—sharp, searching, unsettled.

"…Answer me," she said, her voice lower than before. "Why does the world feel like it's… rejecting you?"

Silence followed.

Not awkward.

Not tense.

But heavy.

Because for the first time—

She wasn't asking about power.

She was asking about him.

Nyx's voice slipped in quietly, almost curious.

"Ohhh… this is new. She's not asking about her power anymore. She's asking about yours."

Alex didn't respond to Nyx.

His gaze remained on Seraphina.

For a moment…

He said nothing.

Then—

"Because I wasn't meant to exist like this."

Her brows furrowed.

"What does that even mean?"

Alex exhaled slowly, his eyes drifting toward the sky for just a second before returning to her.

"This world runs on a script," he said calmly. "Not written in ink… but in fate, expectations, and roles people are born into."

Seraphina frowned.

"…Roles?"

"You," Alex said, "were meant to follow the hero."

Her expression tightened slightly.

"And you?" she asked.

A faint smile touched his lips.

"I was meant to lose."

The words landed heavier than anything else he had said.

Seraphina's eyes widened just slightly.

"…Lose?"

Alex stepped closer, his voice still calm—but something colder lingered beneath it.

"In the story this world follows… I become a villain. I struggle. I fight. I rise just enough to matter…"

A pause.

"…and then I die."

The forest seemed to grow colder.

Seraphina stared at him, trying to read his expression.

But there was no fear in him.

No bitterness.

Only certainty.

"That's insane," she said quietly.

"Is it?" Alex replied.

His gaze didn't waver.

"You've felt it, haven't you?"

Her body stiffened.

"…Felt what?"

"That pressure," he said. "The need to act a certain way. The voice telling you to suppress your Wrath. To follow the path given to you."

Her breath caught.

Because she had.

Every time her power surged—

There was always something pulling it back.

Something telling her no.

Nyx hummed softly.

"Ahh… connecting the dots. I like this part."

Seraphina looked away for a moment, her fingers tightening.

"…That's just control," she said. "Discipline."

Alex shook his head slightly.

"No."

His voice sharpened—just a fraction.

"It's conditioning."

That word hit differently.

Her eyes snapped back to his.

"This world doesn't like deviations," he continued. "It corrects them. Quietly at first. Then violently if needed."

Her heart began to beat faster.

"…And you?" she asked.

Alex's lips curved faintly.

"I'm a deviation."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Real.

"That's why people hate you?" she asked.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No denial.

"They don't know why," he added. "Most of them can't even explain it. They just feel it. Discomfort. Distrust. Rejection."

His gaze darkened slightly.

"Because something in them recognizes that I don't belong to the path they understand."

Seraphina's chest tightened.

"…So the world just decides to hate you?" she asked.

"Not just hate," Alex said calmly.

"Suppress. Control. Eliminate."

The words were simple.

But absolute.

Nyx let out a quiet whistle.

"Damn… when you put it like that, you sound like a walking problem."

Seraphina's mind raced.

Everything he was saying—

It sounded impossible.

And yet…

It felt right.

"…Then why are you telling me this?" she asked finally.

Her voice was quieter now.

Less defensive.

More… uncertain.

Alex stepped closer.

Not invading.

But close enough that she could feel the difference again.

"You're standing at the same edge I am."

Her breath hitched slightly.

"You just don't realize it yet."

Her Wrath flickered again.

Not violently this time.

But… steadily.

"If you keep following the path given to you," Alex continued, "you'll become exactly what this world expects."

A pause.

"Controlled. Predictable. Limited."

Her fingers trembled.

"…And if I don't?"

Alex's eyes met hers.

Sharp.

Unwavering.

"Then the world will push back."

The wind picked up slightly, rustling the trees around them.

"And you'll have to decide…" he added quietly,

"if you're strong enough to stand against it."

Silence.

Seraphina looked down at her hands.

The power inside her…

Wasn't gone.

It was waiting.

For the first time—

She wasn't thinking about William.

She wasn't thinking about control.

She was thinking about choice.

Nyx's voice softened slightly.

"Yeah… she's slipping. Not broken… but definitely not stable anymore."

Alex stepped back.

The shadows began to gather around him again.

"I won't force you," he said.

A familiar line.

But heavier this time.

"I don't need to."

Seraphina looked up quickly.

But he was already fading into the darkness.

"…Alex," she called out suddenly.

He paused.

Just slightly.

"…If the world is against you…"

A brief hesitation.

"…then why are you still fighting it?"

For the first time—

Alex didn't answer immediately.

The silence stretched.

Then—

"Because I don't accept endings written for me."

And with that—

He disappeared.

Leaving Seraphina alone once more.

But this time…

Everything felt different.

High above the forest, standing on the edge of a cliff, Alex looked down at the world beneath him.

The pressure was still there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Correcting.

Nyx's voice returned, light but thoughtful.

"You really told her everything, huh?"

Alex didn't respond.

His eyes remained fixed on the horizon.

"…She needed to understand," he said after a moment.

Nyx chuckled softly.

"Or maybe you just wanted someone else to see it too."

A pause.

"…Maybe."

The wind howled louder now.

And far beyond the horizon—

Something stirred.

Because the moment truth is shared…

The story begins to break faster.

And Alex had just pulled another thread.
