Episode 18: The Celestial Check‑In
That night, Seo‑ah dreamed of the soundstage again.
But it was different this time. The harsh lights were softer. The cameras were there, but they weren't pointing at her. And the Producer‑in‑Chief was standing, not sitting, her silver hair loose around her shoulders.
"Yoon Seo‑ah," she said. "You've been living without the counter."
"I told you. I canceled the show."
"You did." The Producer walked toward her, her footsteps echoing. "And in doing so, you gave us something we haven't had in centuries."
"What?"
"Authenticity." She stopped in front of Seo‑ah. "When you were performing for ratings, you were good. When you stopped performing, you became extraordinary."
Seo‑ah wasn't sure what to say. "So… what now?"
"Now we stop recording." The Producer snapped her fingers, and the cameras powered down, one by one. "Your life is no longer content. It's just yours."
The counter in Seo‑ah's vision flickered once—LIVE—and then vanished.
She blinked. The space where it had been was empty. For the first time in months, she saw the world without any filter.
"Thank you," she said.
The Producer tilted her head. "For what?"
"For giving me the chance. Even if it was just for ratings."
A strange expression crossed the Producer's face—something almost human. "You gave yourself the chance. We just provided the platform."
She turned and walked back toward her desk.
"One more thing," she said without looking back. "Your sister's album is number one in our realm's charts. We'll be watching her career with great interest."
Seo‑ah woke up laughing.
