Chapter 26 - The First Alignment

The meeting happened without agreement.

And that was the point.

---

Three people.

One room.

No shared trust.

Only shared necessity.

---

Evelyn stood at the head of the table.

Damian to her left.

Cassian to her right.

Not symbolic.

Not intentional.

But inevitable.

---

"We don't align," Evelyn said.

"Not fully."

A pause.

"But we overlap."

---

Damian didn't argue.

Cassian didn't disagree.

---

"Leon operates on structure," Evelyn continued.

"Prediction. Reaction loops. Controlled variables."

She looked between them.

"So we remove one."

---

Damian's voice came low.

"Which one?"

Evelyn answered immediately.

"Me."

---

Silence.

Then—

"No," Damian said.

Flat.

Immediate.

Cassian didn't speak.

But his gaze sharpened.

---

Evelyn didn't look at either of them.

"Right now, I'm the constant."

A beat.

"He knows where I am. What I do. How I respond."

---

Cassian said quietly—

"So you disappear."

---

Damian turned sharply.

"That's not happening."

---

Evelyn met his eyes.

"Not disappear."

A pause.

"Redefine."

---

She stepped back.

"Public Evelyn stays."

Another step.

"Real Evelyn moves."

---

Silence.

---

Cassian nodded once.

"That works."

---

Damian didn't.

"That's a risk."

---

Evelyn's voice cooled.

"So is staying predictable."

---

No one argued after that.

Because they all understood—

The game had changed.

---

And this time—

She was changing with it.
