Chapter 2: The Beta Test
The Dentora Region was a graveyard of civilizations that the forest had long ago digested. For the Architect, however, it was a blank canvas.
Standing atop the jagged spire of the Genesis Node, the Architect looked out over the emerald canopy. To a human eye, the valley was a sea of green. To his spectral, data-driven vision, it was a chaotic stream of heat signatures, bio-electrical pulses, and swirling Nen currents. It was "noise." And noise was the enemy of progress.
"Subject 001. Subject 002. Subject 003. Report," the Architect commanded.
The three Kiriko—now officially designated as the Vanguard Unit—shimmered into view from the shadows. They looked different than they had twenty-four hours ago. The neon-blue circuitry etched into their fur pulsated in sync with the Genesis Node. Above their heads, floating holographic tags displayed their new status.

[CURRENT QUEST: AREA MAPPING (42% COMPLETE)]
The leader, the scarred male, bowed low. His voice was no longer a rough snarl but had a melodic, synthesized undertone—a gift of the Soul-Net's translation layer. "Great Architect. We have marked the boundaries of the valley. The 'Noisy Ones'—the lesser beasts—have fled from our touch. But the North... the North is guarded."
"Guarded by what?" the Architect asked, his fingers twitching in the air as he manipulated a floating transparent map of the region.
"The Great Mother of the Peaks," Kir-01 replied, a tremor of instinctual fear in his voice. "A beast of the Old Blood. Her Nen is like a mountain falling. We could not approach without being seen."
The Architect's eyes—two glowing cyan slits—narrowed. "A High-Tier Nen user? Or a Magical Beast of Rank B?"
"She is the storm itself," the Kiriko whispered.
[NEW QUEST GENERATED: SYSTEM EXPANSION (NORTH)]
[OBJECTIVE: NEUTRALIZE OR INTEGRATE THE 'GREAT MOTHER']
[REWARD: 5,000 SERVER CREDITS | NODE 02 BLUEPRINT]
"Excellent," the Architect mused. "A stress test for the combat sub-routines. Before we move, we must initialize the Economy. Bring the 'Harvest' forward."
The two other Kiriko stepped forward, dropping several carcasses of 'Saber-Wolves' at the base of the Soul Crystal. These were Rank C threats, dangerous to common men, but fodder for the Soul-Net's upgraded Pathfinders.
"Watch," the Architect said.
He pointed a finger at the carcasses. A beam of digitized light swept over the dead animals.
[BIOLOGICAL MATERIAL DETECTED]
[CONVERT TO SERVER CREDITS? (Y/N)]
"Execute: Tele-Trade Conversion."
The bodies didn't rot or bleed. They dissolved into a swarm of glowing blue particles—pure Nen-data—and were sucked into the Soul Crystal.
[CONVERSION COMPLETE: +450 SERVER CREDITS]
[SERVER CREDITS DISTRIBUTED TO VANGUARD UNIT (30% SERVICE FEE APPLIED)]
The Kiriko gasped as their own holographic UIs chimed. For the first time in their lives, they felt the satisfaction of currency. They weren't just hunting for food anymore; they were earning resources that could be spent at the Node for "Upgrades."
"At the Node, you may now 'Purchase' Nen-Refinement," the Architect explained. "Spend your credits to increase your [Ten] duration or [Shu] density. The System provides the infrastructure. You provide the data. This is the Trade."
The Kiriko immediately crowded around the Genesis Node, their eyes wide as they browsed a primitive "Store" menu. One purchased a 'Speed Augmentation' script; another opted for 'Hardened Claws (V.1)'.
The Architect watched them with a clinical satisfaction. He was creating a feedback loop. By monetizing survival, he ensured their loyalty and accelerated their growth. But more importantly, the "Service Fee" he collected was being fed directly into his Soul Engine, slowly expanding his own capacity.
"Unit 01, lead the way," the Architect commanded, his body shimmering as he shifted his form from a solid avatar into a more aerodynamic, "Ghost-Mode" state. "Let us meet this Great Mother."
The ascent into the northern peaks was a lesson in the brutality of the natural world. As they climbed, the atmospheric pressure increased, and the Nen in the air became thick, heavy, and hostile. It felt like walking through invisible, electrified honey.
"System Scan: Environmental Analysis," the Architect whispered.
[WARNING: HIGH-DENSITY AURA DETECTED]
[NATURE: EMISSION TYPE / TERRITORIAL]
[THREAT LEVEL: ESTIMATED RANK B+]
Suddenly, the wind changed. A roar that sounded like a tectonic plate snapping echoed through the canyon. From the clouds above, a massive shape descended.
It was a Thunder-Roc—a bird of prey with a wingspan of forty meters, its feathers made of jagged, obsidian-like scales that crackled with blue electricity. This was a creature that likely had ancestors from the Dark Continent, a biological anomaly that ruled the skies of the Dentora Region.
The Roc didn't screech; it released a concentrated burst of Emission-type Nen. A lance of pure lightning tore through the air, aimed directly at the Kiriko.
"Shields up!" Kir-01 shouted, activating the 'Enhanced Ten' script he had just purchased.
The lightning struck the Kiriko's aura, causing the neon circuitry to flare violently. The beast was pushed back, but it lived. The system had calculated the impact and diverted the excess energy into the ground.
"Inefficient," the Architect observed, hovering calmly in the air as the Roc circled back for another strike. "The creature's Nen output is high, but its 'Code' is repetitive. It relies on raw power. It lacks Encryption."
The Architect raised his hand. His "Root-Admin" status allowed him to perceive the Nen not as a force, but as a series of interlocking commands. He saw the Roc's lightning as a "Public Function"—easy to intercept.
"Command: Packet Sniffing," he muttered.
A holographic grid expanded from his palm, intersecting the Roc's next lightning bolt. Instead of exploding, the lightning hit the grid and froze. The Architect's eyes glowed with rapid strings of code.
"I have your frequency," he said. "Now, I revoke your permissions."
[INITIATING REMOTE OVERRIDE...]
[TARGET: THUNDER-ROC (GENUS: MAGICAL BEAST)]
[PROTOCOL: NEN-CRASH v.2 (SELECTIVE)]
The Roc dived, its talons glowing with enough energy to level a skyscraper. But as it entered the Architect's "Root-Domain," its aura didn't just fail—it flatlined.
The bird's wings stopped crackling. Its feathers lost their obsidian sheen. Gravity, the most basic of physics, took over. The massive creature plummeted toward the jagged rocks below, its eyes wide with a terror it couldn't comprehend.
"Wait," the Architect commanded.
He didn't want the creature dead. He wanted the data.
He plummeted after it, catching up in seconds. He reached out and touched the Roc's head.
[WOULD YOU LIKE TO REGISTER THIS ENTITY? (Y/N)]
"Register. Assign Role: Aerial Node."
A Soul Crystal, smaller and more aerodynamic than the Genesis Node, manifested from the Architect's own chest and was driven into the Roc's forehead. It didn't kill the bird; it fused with its nervous system.
The Roc's descent slowed as a new power—the Architect's Nen—flowed into it. The obsidian scales turned a deep, digital cyan. The bird's eyes shifted from feral gold to a cold, systematic blue.
[USER: ROC-ALPHA (SERVER-CLASS: MOBILE NODE)]
[STATUS: DOMESTICATED / NETWORKED]
The Great Mother of the Peaks landed softly on a plateau, bowing its massive head to the Architect. The three Kiriko watched in stunned silence. They had spent generations fearing this beast. The Architect had turned it into a "Mobile Node" in less than a minute.
"The North is now mapped," the Architect announced, his voice carrying across the valley.
He looked at the Roc. With this mobile node, his signal could reach the edges of the Dentora Region. He could feel the Soul-Net expanding, its "Search" functions finally reaching the borders of human civilization.
[NETWORK EXPANSION: +150 MILES]
[NEW SIGNAL DETECTED: HUMAN NEN USERS]
[DISTANCE: 42 KILOMETERS SOUTH-WEST]
The Architect turned his gaze toward the southwest. "It seems our Beta Test has attracted visitors. Professional Hunters."
"Should we hide, Master?" Kir-01 asked, his hand on the hilt of a newly purchased 'Nen-Blade'.
"No," the Architect replied, his form shifting into his human avatar—the sleek, CTO-esque figure in the charcoal suit. "We need more than beasts for the next phase. We need 'Beta Testers' with influence. We need the Association."
He climbed onto the back of the Thunder-Roc.
"Roc-Alpha, take us to the border. It's time to offer the humans a deal they cannot refuse."
