Chapter 1 - A Normal Child

Susmita Das woke up to a pale morning light sneaking through her window. Birds chirped, but she felt none of their cheer.

For her, mornings were battles waiting to happen.

She slipped out of bed, silent as a shadow. Wash face. Comb hair. Get ready. Repeat. Every day the same. Too quiet, too still.

School was a storm of noise—laughter, chatter, shouts. But Susmita? She was invisible. Not by choice. Words stuck like stones in her throat.

Some kids didn't get it. They laughed. They ignored her. Susmita learned to look down, to disappear.

One day, her teacher called her mother.

"Take her to a doctor," the teacher said, voice sharp. "Maybe get a special certificate."

Heavy words. Her mother's face tightened.

That night, the house was different. Quiet, but not peaceful.

At the clinic, sterile and smelling of medicine, Susmita sat stiff. The doctor asked questions. Susmita tried to answer. Slowly. Imperfectly.

Then the doctor shook her head.

"No," she said softly. "No certificate. Your daughter is normal."

Susmita froze. Normal?

"She needs support, not labels," the doctor said. "Time will help her."

The room held its breath.

For the first time, Susmita's heart felt a spark. Not fear or shame. Hope.

Outside, her mother's hand squeezed hers warmly.

Susmita looked up at the endless sky.

Maybe she wasn't broken.

Maybe she was just beginning.

A new journey started here. And whatever came next, Susmita was ready to find where she truly belonged.
