Chapter 66 - The Lost Horizon

The map lay open on the ancient table.

It was unlike any chart Zayden had ever seen.

There were no countries.

No Layers.

No oceans.

Only a single silver path winding across an endless expanse, ending at one name written in elegant script.

The Lost Horizon

Aria traced the path with her finger.

"I've never heard of this place."

Neither had the Keeper.

Nor Caelum.

Even Aster remained silent.

Finally, he spoke.

"It was erased... long before the first Layers were created."

Captain Lyra looked up sharply.

"Then why does this map exist?"

Aster smiled faintly.

"Because some places refuse to be forgotten."

---

Miriam carefully closed the Book of the Free Anchor.

"The Lost Horizon isn't a city."

"It isn't a world."

"It is a crossroads."

"A place where every path that was abandoned still exists."

Elias frowned.

"So... every future that never happened?"

"And every dream people left behind," Miriam replied.

Aria looked at Zayden.

"Why would your future send us there?"

Zayden remembered the little girl's final words.

Tell him yes.

He still didn't understand them.

But somehow...

He felt the answer waited at the Lost Horizon.

---

The Council of Choice gathered once more.

Representatives from every surviving Layer listened as Aster explained the journey ahead.

"If the map is genuine..."

"The Lost Horizon may contain knowledge older than creation itself."

A murmur spread across the chamber.

An elderly scholar stood.

"Then we should send an army."

The Keeper shook his head.

"No."

"Some roads reject those who arrive by force."

Captain Lyra nodded.

"A small expedition."

"Just enough."

The Council agreed.

The expedition would consist of:

Zayden

Aria

The Keeper

Caelum

Captain Lyra

Elias

Aster and Miriam would remain behind to guard the Library of Lives.

---

Before sunrise, the group stood at the edge of the Endless White.

The silver path from the map now floated before them, stretching into the unknown.

No bridge supported it.

It simply hung in the void.

Lyra tested it with one foot.

The path held.

"It knows we're coming," Elias murmured.

They began walking.

Hours passed.

Or perhaps only minutes.

Time no longer behaved normally.

Around them floated countless shimmering visions.

A boy who dreamed of becoming an explorer.

A queen who chose peace over conquest.

An inventor whose greatest creation was never built.

Aria watched them drift by.

"They're beautiful."

"The paths people never took," the Keeper said softly.

"They're never truly lost."

---

Suddenly, the silver path split into three directions.

Each road glowed with a different color.

Blue.

Gold.

Crimson.

At the crossroads stood a weathered stone marker.

Its inscription had faded with age, but one sentence remained clear:

> Choose not with certainty... but with your heart.

Captain Lyra frowned.

"There aren't any clues."

Caelum examined each path.

"They all feel real."

Elias looked uneasy.

"In my future..."

"I never reached this place."

Everyone turned to Zayden.

He looked at the three roads.

There was no logical answer.

No map.

No prophecy.

He closed his eyes.

Then he remembered the lantern festival.

The silver tree.

Aria's laughter.

The words written in the Book of Possibility.

Hope.

He opened his eyes and pointed toward the golden path.

"I trust it."

No one argued.

Together, they stepped onto the golden road.

The moment they did...

The blue and crimson paths quietly vanished behind them.

The crossroads smiled in silence, as if pleased by their choice.

Far ahead...

A warm light appeared on the horizon.

Not a sunrise.

Not a city.

A single tree.

Its leaves shimmered with every color the stars had ever worn.

Beneath its branches...

Someone was waiting.
