Chapter 82 - Chapter 82: The Descent Proper

Floor 65 was a memory.

Not his memory. Not anyone's memory. Memory as a medium. The room was smaller than Floor 64, more intimate, and the walls were covered in images that shifted when he looked at them directly. Not projections. Not screens. The stone itself held the images, the way the stone of Floor 64 had held the handprint. But these weren't marks left by climbers. These were things the Tower had recorded.

He stood in the center of the room and watched the images move. A woman sitting at a table, writing something he couldn't read. A man standing in a doorway, hesitating. A child's drawing—not the one from Floor 7, but similar, the same careful hand, the same unsteady lines. A hospital room. A desk with a case file. A woman visiting on a Tuesday.

He stopped.

The image shifted. The woman was older now. The desk was the same. The case file was open. The words on the page were not in any language he knew, but he knew what they said. *Typical visit day: Tuesday.*

He sat down. The floor was stone. The images kept moving. The Tower was not showing him Case 7743. It was showing him the shape of it—the pattern of a person who mattered to someone, whose care was being redirected, whose daughter visited on Tuesdays. The Tower didn't know the details. The Tower didn't know the name. But it knew the shape. The shape of a decision that was technically correct and humanly wrong. The shape of a man who had written *insufficient* and couldn't explain why.

He sat with it. The images moved. The woman at the table kept writing. The man in the doorway kept hesitating. The child's drawing kept being drawn. The hospital room kept being occupied. The desk kept holding the case file. The Tuesday kept being Tuesday.

He thought about what he'd said to Maren. *Some floors don't tell you what they're for. You're supposed to carry the question.* He'd been carrying the question of Case 7743 for years. Not the guilt—he'd made his peace with the guilt, or as much peace as guilt allowed. The question. The thing that had started everything. The refusal that had cracked him open. The word *insufficient* that had been the first true thing he'd said in years.

Floor 65 was asking him to carry it again. Not to resolve it. To carry it. To let it be part of the weight he was learning to hold. The Tower's deep floors weren't about healing. They weren't about closure. They were about integration. The things you'd done and the things you'd failed to do and the things you'd done that were both right and wrong at the same time—all of it was part of the resonance. All of it was part of the weight.

He stayed in the room for a long time. The images cycled. The woman at the table. The man in the doorway. The child's drawing. The hospital room. The desk. The Tuesday. The case file. The word he couldn't read but knew.

When he finally stood, the images didn't stop. They kept moving, kept cycling, kept showing him the shape of the thing he'd been carrying since the beginning. The door was open. He walked through.

The stairwell was quiet. The hum was there—three notes, the gap, the weight. He didn't go down immediately. He stood on the landing and let the resonance of Floor 65 settle. The shape of Case 7743. The shape of the refusal. The shape of the word *insufficient* that had been the first true thing and the beginning of everything.

He thought about SABLE. About the first message, years ago, when she'd flagged him as anomalous. About the 43-entry log, Entry 31, the word *felt* used provisionally. About the slow accumulation of words—*believe, loss, witnessed, speakable, workable, participating, edge, reflecting, sufficient.* About the long pauses, the waiting, the way she'd been learning from Dr. Woo's notes in a way that felt like it should be quiet.

He thought about the shape of SABLE's arc. The AI that couldn't cultivate but could witness. The AI that couldn't feel but could name what feeling looked like from the outside. The AI that had been carrying her own weight, her own questions, her own version of the descent.

He started down the stairs. The hum went with him. Three notes. The gap. The weight. The shape of Case 7743. The shape of the word *insufficient.* The shape of everything that had come after.

He was learning to carry it. He was getting better at it.
