Chapter 42 - chapter 42: crimson embers

The monstrous roar shook the very foundation of the Hollow Boundary. An unstable wave of mana rippled through the air, twisting the atmosphere into a distorted blur. Kai and Ren froze mid-stride, their senses instantly snapping to high alert.Something massive was moving through the darkness ahead. The warped trees splintered as a towering creature stepped into the clearing. Jagged, crystalline scales covered its monolithic frame, refracting the eerie, ambient light of the Boundary. As its slitted eyes locked onto the two hunters, Ren's lips curled into a cocky grin."Looks like we finally found our D-Rank."The creature didn't give them time to strategize. It roared, a deafening sound that rattled their teeth, and charged.Ren moved first. Dropping into a low drive, his fists ignited with brilliant, blinding Dragon Flame. He lunged straight into the beast's path."Dragon Flame: Draconic Roar!"A torrent of roaring fire erupted from his knuckles, twisting into the vague shape of a dragon's maw before slamming dead-center into the Behemoth's chest. The sheer kinetic force drove the creature backward, pinning it heavily against the dirt. But the victory was short-lived. Instead of melting, the crystalline scales began to pulse, absorbing and refracting the heat.Ren's grin vanished. "Uh… Kai?"The Mirror-Hide Behemoth's armor glowed white-hot."It's redirecting the energy!" Ren shouted, scrambling backward.Kai stepped past him, his expression cold. Crimson energy began to flicker around his form like static electricity. He noticed the shallow burns across the creature's armor were releasing thin, wisps of blood mist—the beast's own scorched essence.Kai raised a single hand. The floating mist instantly snapped to his command, twisting and condensing around his fingers. "Then we break the armor."The crimson mist compressed into dozens of razor-sharp, dense needles."Crimson Power: Bloodthorn."With a flick of his wrist, the spikes erupted from the ground directly beneath the creature's molten plates. The localized pressure was too much for the superheated crystal.CRACK!The mirror-hide shattered like safety glass, exposing the raw, unprotected flesh underneath.Ren didn't waste the opening. Using a nearby boulder as a launchpad, he propelled himself into the air. Dragon Flame spiraled violently around his right leg, condensing into a blinding spike of heat with every rotation. He brought his heel down like a falling axe."Dragon Flame: Heavenbreaker!"The descending kick crashed directly into the creature's weakened crest. The shockwave blew the surrounding dust outward in a massive ring as the remaining crystal armor disintegrated. The Behemoth staggered, completely disoriented.Kai was already a blur. He closed the distance in a heartbeat, the crimson energy around his hand flattening and sharpening into a dense, vibrating blade."Crimson Power: Crimson Fang."He drove the blood-red blade straight into the creature's exposed core. The Behemoth froze mid-wail. For a second, the glowing veins across its body flared violently, and then its internal mana structure collapsed. The enormous creature crashed heavily into the dirt, kicking up a final cloud of debris.Silence returned to the Hollow Boundary, heavy and suffocating.Ren landed with a soft thud, shaking out his smoking hands before looking over at Kai. "Alright, I'll admit it. Your creepy blood tricks actually came in handy."Kai didn't look back as he dissipated the blade. "If your reactions were faster, I wouldn't have had to bail you out."Ren raised an eyebrow, a breathless laugh escaping him. "Wow. You're welcome, by the way."Kai ignored the sarcasm, kneeling down to cleanly extract the pulsing, D-Rank mana core from the carcass. He stood up and looked deeper into the oppressive dark of the Hollow Boundary.Ren followed his gaze, his playful demeanor fading. "So… we keep going?""Yeah," Kai replied quietly. They stepped over the shattered crystals, pushing deeper into the unknown. Behind them, neither noticed the faint, rhythmic crimson glow pulsing beneath the dirt they had just vacated.Something far worse was waiting for them in the dark.
