Chapter 22 - Chapter Twenty_Two: The Promise

Three months had passed since the night Lila and Adrian had stood beside the river and chosen each other again.

Three months since the apology.

Three months since trust had begun growing between them like a delicate flower that needed constant care.

And somehow, things had become beautiful again.

Not perfect.

Beautiful.

Adrian had stopped making promises he couldn't keep. Instead, he showed Lila what he meant through his actions.

He called when he said he would.

He listened when she spoke.

He never made her question where she stood in his life.

And Lila slowly stopped waiting for the other shoe to drop.

She began believing that perhaps, this time, love could actually be peaceful.

One Saturday morning, Adrian asked her to meet him at the park where they had shared their first kiss.

Lila smiled when she saw the message.

Come to the park at six. I have something for you.

She immediately replied:

Should I be worried?

His response came seconds later.

Only if you don't like surprises.

She laughed.

By six o'clock, she arrived at the park.

The sky was beginning to darken, and the evening breeze gently moved through the trees.

She looked around.

"Adrian?"

No answer.

She walked toward the bench where they had once sat together.

Then she heard footsteps behind her.

She turned.

Adrian stood there.

He wasn't holding flowers.

He wasn't carrying a gift.

Instead, he held a small black box.

Lila's heart skipped.

"What is that?"

He smiled nervously.

"You'll find out."

"Adrian…"

He walked toward her.

"I brought you here because this is where everything changed for me."

Lila's smile faded slightly.

He continued.

"This was where I realized I didn't just care about you. I loved you."

He took her hands.

"And this was also where I learned that loving someone isn't enough if you're not brave enough to protect that love."

Her eyes softened.

"Adrian…"

"I know I've made mistakes," he continued. "I've hurt you. I've made you question whether you were enough when the truth was that I wasn't brave enough."

He opened the box.

Inside was a delicate silver bracelet with a tiny raindrop-shaped pendant.

Lila stared at it.

"It's beautiful."

"I want you to have it."

He gently placed it in her palm.

"But it's not the gift."

She looked at him, confused.

"What do you mean?"

Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded document.

Lila's eyebrows furrowed.

"What is that?"

He handed it to her.

She unfolded it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Her heart began racing.

"Adrian…"

He smiled.

"I bought a house."

She looked up at him.

"A house?"

"For us."

Her lips parted.

"You did what?"

"I found a place away from the city. Quiet. Private. Somewhere we can build our own life without anyone deciding what our marriage should look like."

Marriage.

The word suddenly sounded different.

Real.

Permanent.

Lila looked back at the document.

"You're serious?"

"Completely."

He stepped closer.

"But there's something else."

"What?"

"I don't want you to marry me because you think you owe me another chance."

Her eyes met his.

"I want you to marry me only if you genuinely believe that we can build something better than what we had before."

Lila's eyes filled with tears.

This wasn't the proposal she had imagined.

It was better.

Because he wasn't asking her to forget their past.

He was asking her to build a future despite it.

She smiled through her tears.

"Yes."

Adrian froze.

"Yes?"

She laughed softly.

"Yes, Adrian."

He pulled her into his arms.

And as they held each other beneath the darkening sky, the first drops of rain began to fall.

Neither of them moved.

They simply stood there, smiling.

Because once again, the rain had found them.

But this time, it wasn't carrying sadness.

It was witnessing a promise.

And neither of them knew that before the year ended, that same promise would be tested in ways they never imagined.
