Chapter 17 - A Tragedy

In the meantime, during the respective fights. Omniscient and Dominant were face to face.

Dominant shares a story of a common man.

There was a curious man. A man who always wanted to be updated on everything. He just wanted every bit of knowledge.

He neither had any interest in people or relations. He was becoming more and more like an empty vessel with every passing day.

Even during his higher education no one took any interest in him or his work.

Time passed and almost at the end of his higher education he met a young girl. The girl was an orphan. The man saw her on streets quite a few times. She didn't have anyone either, but she was different from others.

She was helping beggars and anyone she thought needs her help. People took advantage of her but she didn't flinch from her nature. She chose to be kind against the cruel world.

One day, the man was sitting on a slope, gazing the blue sky.

"Isn't the sky, extra blue today?"

The man turned and it was her. The girl was staring at the widespread blue.

"Maybe."

"It is, you just have to had the heart to see it."

He looked at her and she smiled. The man took a moment to see her.

She had a beautiful smile, her eyes matched the color of her long hair, pitch black. Her clothes had stiches, mostly made from rug woven together. She had a slipper and that's it.

"Why you are so gloomy?" The girl asked.

"Me? I don't know. Maybe because nobody is appreciating my work."

"Hmm. What do you do?"

The man laughed, "You won't get it but let me tell you, I am a researcher."

"So, do you like your work?"

"Of course, I like what I do."

"Then why do you need appreciation?"

"What do you mean?"

"If you like what you do, then you should just focus on finishing your job. Hunger for appreciation is just another form of slavery."

"Why do you think so?"

"Because it limits true potential, silly, and fix it with a reward."

Then I take it that you help people because it pleases you."

"Yeah, it gives me satisfaction."

"You talk much like a grown man then a kid. It's not like I want people to praise me or something. I just want them to see the world from different pair of eyes."

"Hina, come over here."

Someone called her and she went.

The man didn't think much of it and just continued his work.

One day he met the same girl.

They sat at the same spot and talked a bit more.

Next time the man crossed her path and asked her to sit with him.

The man developed an emotional attachment to the kid.

He bragged about all his works. Explained science, shared his vision and told her many things that a kid doesn't care.

While the kid always listened him.

The kid had nobody so, she thought him as a father figure.

The man got too attached to the kid.

One day the man asked her if she would like to live with him as her daughter.

But the girl refused. She replied that these streets need someone like her or else world will be a bit closer to losing good people.

The man thought if she is happy then nothing else matters.

The man continued his research and her emotional attachment grew too.

The man and the kid shared more time together. He had never felt the love of having a child so, he didn't know how to hold back his emotions.

Everything was going well until that day.

The man came and sat at the same place but the kid didn't show up.

The man didn't know what to do, he spent the night waiting for her.

In the morning, he woke up by the kid's voice.

She told him not to wait for her like this and sent him to work.

The man thought she was growing and she might had found someone.

The man still waited for her at the same spot for sometime and then left for home.

Sometimes the kid came and sometimes she did not.

She was the one who share stories now.

She told him that that she found a group of children like her and worked with her in order to help others.

The man listened her and never suspected anything.

This continued about a month or so.

The man waited for her but she never came back. The last time he saw her was a fortnight before.

The man thought the kid found her motive and left the old man for good.

The thought haunted him but he was happy. He learned the sense of sacrifice.

The man returned him with heavy heart that night. He couldn't sleep.

He felt he was missing something. His thoughts wanted to get out but there was no one to hear him.

At last, in the morning, he dozed for a few hours.

He woke up and was getting ready for work. Turned on the television for news (He got the habit when the kid insisted him to do so.).

The girl was on the TV. A picture of her and a person holding microphone to present the news.

"Two days ago, this girl was found in a pitiful state. The doctor said she was dead for five days and her body was thrown in open. The police said it was a case of organ trafficking and would do the best to find the suspects."

The man didn't know what to do. He had tears.

Just staring at the television, he couldn't think of anything.

He was frustrated, angry and grieving at the same time.

Every bit of emotion he held back, everything just filled him to the brim.

He didn't go to work.

Lying, he asked himself, why did I not try to find what was going with her.

He went to the hospital where she was kept, did all the paperwork as father and sent her with an aching heart.
