Chapter 1 - A Birthday Surprise

Elina stood before the ornate mirror, putting the final touches to her makeup with shaking hands. The shimmering gown she wore, a gift from her parents for her 18th birthday celebration tonight, now felt like a cruel joke. Downstairs, the distant sounds of music and laughter from the party guests grew muffled as Elina tried to block out the world, to lose herself in the illusion of a perfect night.

Suddenly, a deafening gunshot shattered the peaceful moment. Elina froze, her heart seizing in her chest. Screams erupted from below, followed by the staccato bursts of more gunfire. Elina raced out of her room, her heels clicking frantically against the hardwood floor.

As she reached the top of the grand staircase, the scene below unfolded in a nightmarish tableau. Her father lay crumpled at the base of the stairs, his head a grotesque ruin of shattered bone and oozing blood. Beside him, her elder brother writhed and screamed, one leg a jagged, bloody stump where it had once been. Her mother lay naked and still, a scarlet stain spreading across her chest, her eyes staring sightlessly at the ornate ceiling.

The remaining guests, once a vibrant tapestry of color and life, now fled in terror, their screams echoing through the cavernous foyer. A few brave souls, mostly the household staff, tried to rush the intruders, only to be cut down in a hail of bullets. The once grand ballroom was now a scene of carnage, the air thick with the coppery scent of blood and the acrid tang of gun smoke.

*Elina stood paralyzed, her scream caught in her throat, as a group of eight to ten muscular men in black tactical gear, their faces obscured by balaclavas, rounded up her surviving family members. They grabbed her brother, now a broken, sobbing mess, and dragged him to the center of the room. One by one, they took turns brutally beating him, their fists and boots raining down upon his body until he was just a lump.

Elina watched in horror as her brother's body went limp, his agonized screams fading to choked, bubbling gurgles. The man who had been overseeing the torture looked up, his cold eyes meeting Elina's terrified gaze. A cruel smirk twisted his mouth beneath the black fabric of his mask.

*It seems we have a birthday girl in our midst, boys, *he said, his voice a low, menacing growl. Isn't this a special day for you, little girl? What a wonderful gift we've brought you.

Elina stumbled backwards, her heart hammering against her ribs as the man stepped towards her, his boots splattered with blood. Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision as she turned to flee.

The men gave chase, their heavy footsteps pounding behind her as she raced through the once grand halls of her family's estate. Elina's lungs burned and her muscles screamed in protest, but still she ran, driven by the primal instinct to survive.

Somehow, miraculously, she escaped the blood-soaked walls of her home and emerged into the eerie stillness of the night. The usually bustling market square was deserted, a ghost town under the pallid moonlight. Elina's bare feet slapped against the cobblestones as she stumbled through the narrow alleyways, her gown torn and blood-smeared, her hair a wild tangle around her shoulders.

She heard hushed murmurs carried on the night breeze, snippets of conversation that made her blood run cold. ...Orion Falco, the mafia lord...took his revenge, just as he promised...the Valmont family, wiped out...a warnin' to all who cross him...

Elina's mind reeled, trying to make sense of the devastation. Orion Falco - the name was unfamiliar to her, but the fear it evoked was unmistakable. She had to get away, had to find help, before the men who had destroyed everything she loved caught up to her.

As if summoned by the desperate thought, a car screeched to a halt beside her. Elina looked up, blinking away tears, to see her senior, her long-time secret crush, stepping out of the vehicle. In her grief and terror, she had run straight to him, drawn to the safety and comfort he represented.

Elina rushed into his embrace, burying her face against his chest as great, wracking sobs tore through her. His arms wrapped around her, strong and protective, as he murmured soothing words into her hair.

*Shh, it's alright, I've got you, *he whispered, his voice low and steady. I won't let anyone hurt you, Elina. I promise you're safe with me.

He led her to the passenger side of the car, his hand never leaving her waist, a anchors her to him. As they sped through the darkened streets, Elina's tears gradually subsided, replaced by a numb, disbelieving haze. She leaned her forehead against the cool glass of the window, watching the city lights blur past in a stream of color.

Some time later, as exhaustion claimed her, Elina found herself being carried, her head lolling against a broad, muscular chest. She was dimly aware of being lifted from the car, of strong arms cradling her close. Her eyelids fluttered shut, and she let the oblivion of sleep pull her under.

Elina jolted awake with a gasp, her heart pounding as she blinked in the blood red, decorated hall room. The last vestiges of sleep fled her mind as she realized she was no longer in the safety of her senior's arms, but lying on a cold, hard floor. She scrambled to her feet, her breath coming in panicked gusts, only to freeze as a shadow detached from the standing figures and stepped towards her.

Elina's blood turned to ice in her veins as the man stepped into the faint party light filtering through the ceiling. He was tall, imposing, his features chiseled and harsh. But it was his eyes that made Elina's heart seize in her chest - they were cold, pitiless, and achingly familiar.

*I must say, you put up quite the chase, dear, *he said, his voice a low, menacing growl. But I knew you couldn't have gone far. Not on your birthday, of all days.

Elina's breath caught in her throat, her mind reeling as the terrible realization dawned on her. This was the man behind the attack, the one who had slaughtered her family, the one everyone spoke of with such fear and dread.

*You...you're Orion Falco,

Ya SURPRISE . I hope you like it.
