Chapter 86 - Chapter 86 – The First Name

The map remained suspended above the Guardian chamber.

Seven dark points.

Three Bijuu signatures.

One distant location pulsing stronger than the others.

Blue.

Gold.

Red.

Kushina stared at them.

Her new chain rested around her wrist.

Gold and crimson twisted through every link.

Kurama's chakra remained inside it.

Not trapped.

Not taken.

Present.

⸻

Daichi stood several steps away.

He had not moved.

His final words still hung between them.

Akane wasn't the first.

She was the second.

Kushina looked at him.

"Who?"

Daichi closed his eyes.

For once—

he did not tell her to wait.

Did not tell her it was complicated.

Did not tell her there were things she did not understand.

He simply answered.

"Rei Uzumaki."

Silence.

⸻

Kushina's expression changed.

"Ren's grandfather?"

"Yes."

Hana looked toward Daichi.

"The man the organization released?"

Daichi nodded.

"The same man."

Kushina's chain tightened around her wrist.

"You knew him."

"Yes."

"How well?"

A pause.

"Well enough to believe I was saving his life."

Kurama growled quietly inside her.

"…that sentence rarely ends well…"

Kushina's eyes remained on Daichi.

"No."

She spoke softly.

"It really doesn't."

⸻

Daichi walked toward the wall.

Ancient Uzumaki names covered the black stone.

He stopped before one of them.

Not Rei's.

Older.

An Anchor.

A Guardian.

A Witness.

He looked at the carvings instead of Kushina.

"Years ago, we didn't know what the fragments were."

"Who is we?"

Daichi's jaw tightened.

"The group that eventually became the organization."

Kushina felt anger rise.

The chain around her wrist remained steady.

Her anger.

Not Kurama's.

She could tell the difference now.

⸻

Daichi continued.

"We found people carrying chakra patterns that did not behave normally."

"Bijuu chakra?"

"Sometimes."

He looked toward Renji.

"Sometimes something else."

Renji's remaining core glowed faintly.

The fragments inside him remained calm.

Separate.

Listening.

Daichi looked back toward Kushina.

"Rei was the first person we found who carried both."

⸻

Minato stepped closer.

"Bijuu chakra and a fragment of the Voice?"

Daichi nodded.

"Not enough Bijuu chakra to identify."

Kurama shifted.

"…I would have…"

Kushina closed her eyes briefly.

"You think you could recognize it?"

"…if he carried enough…"

A pause.

"…yes…"

She looked toward Daichi.

"What happened to Rei?"

⸻

Daichi took a slow breath.

"He came to us voluntarily."

Kushina frowned.

"He knew something was inside him?"

"He knew something was wrong."

The Guardian chamber faded around Daichi's words.

Not literally.

But Kushina could almost see it.

A younger man.

Red hair.

Exhausted.

Afraid.

Still standing.

⸻

"He heard voices," Daichi said.

"Not constantly."

"Only when he became angry."

Another pause.

"Or frightened."

Hana touched the back of her neck instinctively—

then remembered there was nothing there anymore.

"The Voice."

"We did not call it that."

"What did you call it?"

Daichi's expression tightened.

"Contamination."

⸻

Kurama growled.

Kushina felt the red chakra inside their shared chain flare.

Not hers.

His.

She looked inward.

"That word bothers you."

"…humans call anything they cannot control contamination…"

She stared at Daichi.

"So you thought Rei was contaminated."

"Yes."

"And your solution was to seal it."

"Yes."

"Inside him?"

"No."

Daichi finally looked at her.

"That was the first mistake."

⸻

The inheritance scroll moved.

One page turned by itself.

Mitoha's recording appeared beside the pedestal.

Her image remained silent.

Listening.

Daichi stared at her.

Almost as though the dead could judge him.

"We believed the foreign presence was attached to Rei's chakra."

"So we tried to remove it."

Minato's expression changed.

"Without an anchor."

Daichi nodded.

"We had no idea an anchor was necessary."

⸻

Kushina understood before he said it.

"You tore it apart."

Daichi's silence confirmed it.

Hana stared at him.

"You destroyed a fragment."

"Yes."

The chamber became still.

Mitoha's warning returned.

If one fragment is destroyed…

…it returns to the whole.

Kushina slowly looked toward the dark well.

"You strengthened it."

"We didn't know."

"That doesn't undo it."

"No."

Daichi did not defend himself.

"It doesn't."

⸻

The ancient chains beneath the island shifted.

A distant vibration travelled through the chamber.

Kurama became alert.

Not frightened.

Listening.

Kushina noticed immediately.

"Did it hear us?"

"…it does not need words…"

"What does that mean?"

Kurama's eyes narrowed.

"…memory leaves traces…"

He looked toward the well.

"…especially here…"

⸻

Daichi continued before the silence could grow.

"Rei survived the extraction."

Kushina looked at him again.

"Barely."

"But he survived."

"For three days, we thought we had succeeded."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

Very small.

"We celebrated."

Nobody spoke.

⸻

"Then Rei started remembering things that had never happened to him."

Hana frowned.

"What things?"

"Places."

"People."

"Deaths."

Daichi's voice became quieter.

"Memories from the fragment."

The Voice had returned to the whole—

but something had remained inside Rei.

Not the consciousness.

The damage.

⸻

"He described the Divine Tree."

Kurama went completely still.

Daichi looked toward Kushina.

"He described people being absorbed."

"Chakra being pulled into something enormous."

"He described nine lights separating from darkness."

Kushina's stomach tightened.

The memory Kurama had shown her.

Rei had seen pieces of it too.

⸻

"He shouldn't have known any of that," Daichi said.

"We believed removing the fragment had destroyed the connection."

Minato understood.

"But the connection worked both ways."

"Yes."

Daichi looked toward the well.

"When we broke the fragment…"

A pause.

"…Rei became connected directly to the whole."

⸻

Hana whispered:

"That's why the fragments can't be destroyed."

Daichi nodded.

"Rei taught us that."

Kushina's eyes hardened.

"He taught you?"

Daichi heard the accusation.

"He suffered while we learned."

"That sounds more accurate."

His gaze dropped.

"Yes."

⸻

Renji shifted against the stone wall.

"What did you do to him afterward?"

Daichi remained silent.

Renji's mismatched eye narrowed.

"What did you do?"

"We tried to close the connection."

"How?"

"Seals."

"Pain?"

Daichi looked at him.

"Yes."

White light moved beneath Renji's skin.

The Bijuu fragments reacted to his anger.

Hana placed a hand over his.

He did not pull away.

⸻

"We believed intense physical sensation could interrupt the foreign memories."

Daichi's voice sounded almost mechanical now.

Like repeating something he had spent years wishing he could erase.

"For short periods…"

"It worked."

Kushina stared at him.

"So you hurt him to keep the Voice quiet."

"Yes."

"And then?"

"We started designing better restraints."

The black formulas on Ren.

Hana's vessel seal.

The systems inside the laboratories.

Their origin became painfully clear.

⸻

Minato looked toward Daichi.

"The command network started with Rei."

"Yes."

Daichi's hands curled into fists.

"It was supposed to detect when he was losing control."

"To restrain him until the connection passed."

His voice hardened.

"Never to control his decisions."

Hana looked at him.

"But someone realized it could."

Daichi nodded.

⸻

"The first time I saw them use the system to make Rei move against his will…"

He stopped.

Kushina waited.

"What did you do?"

"I disabled it."

"Good."

"Then I rebuilt it."

Her expression changed.

Daichi met her eyes.

"Because I thought I could make it safer."

⸻

Kurama laughed.

There was no humour in it.

"…there it is…"

Kushina understood.

The beginning of everything.

Not one evil decision.

One compromise.

Then another.

Every time justified because the next version would be safer.

Better.

More controlled.

⸻

Daichi looked toward the map.

"I told myself leaving would mean abandoning Rei."

"So I stayed."

"When they requested another subject…"

His voice faltered.

Kushina already knew.

"Akane."

"Yes."

⸻

The room became painfully quiet.

"Why her?"

Daichi did not answer immediately.

Because that answer hurt differently.

"She volunteered."

Kushina's eyes widened.

"For what?"

"To help Rei."

⸻

Daichi looked toward the ancient chains.

"She had chakra strong enough to stabilize his connection."

"She believed if another person entered the network voluntarily, Rei wouldn't have to carry the pressure alone."

Kushina remembered the Constellation.

The original purpose.

Sharing pressure.

Not controlling it.

"That was the beginning of the Constellation."

"Yes."

⸻

A younger Akane appeared in Kushina's imagination.

Red hair.

Stubborn.

Walking willingly into a seal because someone else was suffering.

Too familiar.

Kushina hated how familiar.

Daichi saw the understanding in her face.

"That is why I reacted the way I did when you started doing the same thing."

"Trying to save everyone."

"Yes."

"You saw her."

"Every time."

⸻

Kushina looked away.

For once—

her anger softened before she had to force it.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

Different things.

Important difference.

⸻

"What went wrong?" Minato asked.

Daichi looked toward him.

"For a while?"

"Nothing."

The answer surprised everyone.

"It worked."

Rei slept.

The voices weakened.

Akane remained stable.

The pressure moved between them.

Shared.

Chosen.

Human.

⸻

"And that was the problem," Daichi said.

Kushina frowned.

"How is something working a problem?"

"Because the others saw what the network could do."

His expression hardened.

"Not what it meant."

"What it could do."

⸻

Renji understood first.

"Connect chakra networks."

"Yes."

"Move influence between bodies."

"Yes."

"Transfer commands."

Daichi closed his eyes.

"Yes."

⸻

Hana looked sick.

"They turned the Constellation into the vessel network."

"They tried."

Daichi's eyes opened again.

"Akane refused to help."

"So did I."

"But by then they had copied enough."

Kushina looked toward the map.

"Enough to continue without you."

"Yes."

⸻

"And Rei?"

Daichi became still again.

"They kept him."

"How long?"

"Years."

Kushina's chains moved.

Only slightly.

"You left him there."

The words were quiet.

More dangerous than shouting.

Daichi did not flinch.

"Yes."

⸻

"Why?"

"I chose Akane."

Silence.

Kushina stared at him.

"When the organization turned against us…"

A pause.

"I could get one person out."

His voice broke for the first time.

"Akane or Rei."

"I chose Akane."

⸻

The Voice whispered from the new anchor.

Quiet.

Contained.

But present.

Choose.

Kushina's eyes snapped toward the cradle.

The dark eye inside the core watched them.

You all choose eventually.

Her golden chain rose.

Kurama's red chakra moved beside hers.

Not taking over.

Standing there.

⸻

Daichi looked at the anchor.

"I know."

The Voice seemed almost amused.

And the one left behind remembers.

Daichi's face tightened.

Rei remembered.

⸻

Kushina stepped between Daichi and the cradle.

"Enough."

The eye moved toward her.

He abandoned one life for another.

"I heard him."

And you will do the same.

"No."

You already have.

Images appeared inside the white core.

Ren and the prisoners disappearing toward the harbour.

Kushina leaving them behind.

The echo entering the island.

Renji almost dying.

⸻

Kushina's anger rose.

The Voice waited for it.

Kurama's voice came quietly.

"…your anger…"

"I know."

She felt it.

Hers.

Separate.

Useful only if she decided what to do with it.

She lowered the chain.

⸻

"I didn't abandon Ren."

The Voice stared.

"He chose to take the others."

A pause.

"And I trusted him."

The result is the same.

"No."

Kushina looked toward Daichi.

"The choice isn't the only thing that matters."

Daichi lifted his eyes.

"What happens after matters too."

⸻

She faced him completely.

"You left Rei."

"Yes."

"You can't change that."

"No."

"But he's still alive."

Daichi froze.

Hana looked toward her.

Kushina continued.

"The organization released him."

"We saw him."

"They used him as bait."

A pause.

"But that means he survived."

⸻

Daichi stared at her.

For years—

perhaps he had thought of Rei as another grave.

Another person lost behind a sealed door.

Kushina stepped closer.

"You still have an after."

His breathing changed.

"What?"

"You made the wrong choice."

Her voice remained steady.

"Maybe there was no right one."

"But there's still something you can do now."

⸻

The Voice became silent.

It had wanted guilt.

Isolation.

A past that could never move.

Kushina refused to give it one.

⸻

Daichi looked toward the fragment map.

"Rei's connection may still exist."

Minato stepped closer.

"To the whole?"

"Possibly."

Daichi moved toward the scroll.

"If destroying the fragment connected him directly…"

His hands began moving across the ancient diagrams.

"…then even after all these years, his chakra may still carry a trace."

Hana looked toward the seven points.

"Can we find him through it?"

Daichi stopped.

Then looked toward Kushina.

"Not me."

⸻

Kushina already understood.

She looked at the chain around her wrist.

Gold.

Red.

Kurama.

The Guardian bond had detected the stolen Bijuu fragments.

Maybe it could detect something else too.

⸻

"Kurama."

"…I know…"

"Can we try?"

A pause.

"…yes…"

No argument.

No warning.

Just yes.

⸻

Kushina sat beside the map.

Her chain spread across the stone.

Kurama's red chakra entered one side.

Her gold travelled through the other.

Separate.

Together.

She closed her eyes.

The world became chakra.

⸻

Blue.

Matatabi.

Gold.

Chōmei.

Red.

Son Gokū.

The distant points burned clearly.

She moved past them.

Searching for something darker.

Older.

Not a fragment.

A scar.

⸻

Kurama guided her.

Not by pulling.

By showing her where not to look.

"…not the chakra…"

"What?"

"…look for the absence…"

Kushina frowned.

"That makes no sense."

"…when something is torn away…"

His voice lowered.

"…the wound remembers its shape…"

⸻

She changed her focus.

Stopped searching for power.

Started searching for damage.

And suddenly—

she felt it.

Far away.

Weak.

Thin.

A connection stretched across impossible distance.

Not black.

Not red.

Almost invisible.

A scar in the chakra itself.

⸻

"There."

Kurama felt it too.

"…yes…"

The map changed.

A new point appeared.

Not one of the seven fragments.

A small Uzumaki spiral.

Flickering.

Alive.

⸻

Daichi stopped breathing.

"Rei."

Kushina opened her eyes.

The point remained.

Far from the island.

Closer to the northern fragment facility.

Too close.

⸻

Minato looked toward the map.

"They took him back."

Daichi's expression hardened.

"No."

He pointed toward the two locations.

"They never let him go."

Silence.

Kushina understood.

The release.

The bait.

The escape.

Everything.

"They could still be tracking him."

"Yes."

"And if he's connected to the whole…"

Daichi looked toward the dark points.

"They may be using Rei to locate the other fragments."

⸻

The new anchor pulsed.

The Voice laughed softly.

Now you understand why they kept the first.

Kushina looked toward it.

"Enjoy the box."

The dark eye narrowed.

She turned away before it could answer.

⸻

Renji watched the Uzumaki spiral on the map.

"We are going after him."

It was not a question.

Kushina looked toward him.

His core was stable—

but fragile.

Hana had only just been freed.

Minato looked exhausted.

Daichi carried years of guilt.

They had prisoners waiting somewhere near the coast.

And the First Seal still surrounded something that had begun to look back.

They could not simply run toward another facility.

Not yet.

⸻

Old Kushina would have.

Kurama knew it.

She felt his amusement.

"…you are thinking…"

"Shocking, I know."

"…usually you have already started running…"

Kushina looked toward the map.

"We go back first."

Kurama became quiet.

Daichi looked at her.

"What?"

"We find Ren and the others."

"Get Hana and Renji somewhere safe."

"We figure out what we actually know."

A pause.

"Then we go after Rei."

⸻

Daichi stared at her.

"You're not going immediately?"

"No."

"Who are you?"

Kushina pointed at him.

"Don't ruin this."

Minato smiled.

This time—

openly.

⸻

Kurama's low rumble filled her mind.

"…better…"

Kushina looked inward.

"Another compliment?"

"…observation…"

"Sure."

⸻

Mitoha's recording appeared beside the map.

"Guardian departure preparation available."

Kushina turned toward her.

"We can leave the island?"

"Yes."

"Without opening the outer barrier again?"

"Secondary route available."

Kushina stared.

"You waited until now to mention that?"

Minato sighed quietly.

Daichi closed his eyes.

Hana laughed.

Even Renji smiled.

⸻

For a few seconds—

the Guardian chamber did not feel like a prison.

It felt almost alive.

People talking.

Arguing.

Laughing.

Names filling a place built to preserve them.

⸻

Kushina looked toward the seven fragments again.

Then toward Rei's spiral.

This was not over.

Not even close.

But something had changed.

The organization had spent years collecting pieces.

People.

Chakra.

Memories.

Trying to build something whole by removing everything that made those pieces different.

Kushina was beginning to understand the opposite.

Wholeness did not require becoming one thing.

Sometimes—

it meant remaining separate and choosing to stand together.

⸻

Her hand closed around the red and gold chain.

"Kurama."

"…what now…"

"When this is over…"

A pause.

She had not meant to say it.

The thought simply came.

"What do you want?"

Silence.

A very long silence.

⸻

"…what…"

"You keep helping me decide what comes next."

She looked toward the path out of the Guardian chamber.

"So what comes next for you?"

Kurama stared at her from behind the bars.

No answer came.

Not because he refused.

Because no one had asked him before.

⸻

Kushina felt something tighten in her chest.

She did not push.

"You don't have to answer now."

Kurama looked toward the chain between them.

"…I do not know…"

For once—

there was no anger in the admission.

Kushina smiled faintly.

"Then we'll figure it out."

His eyes snapped toward her.

"…we…"

"Yeah."

She stood.

"That word you used earlier."

"…you are becoming irritating again…"

"Good."

⸻

She opened her eyes.

Minato waited near the doorway.

"You ready?"

Kushina looked back at the Guardian chamber.

At Hana.

Renji.

Daichi.

The sealed Voice.

The names carved into the walls.

Then at the chain around her wrist.

"Yes."

A pause.

"Let's go home first."

⸻

Far away—

beneath a northern facility—

an old man opened his eyes.

Red hair had faded almost completely to white.

Seals covered his chest.

His arms.

His throat.

Machines surrounded him.

For years—

he had felt only fragments.

Voices.

Pieces of memories that were not his.

Then something changed.

Warmth moved through the old scar in his chakra.

Gold.

And beside it—

red.

Different.

Separate.

Together.

⸻

Rei Uzumaki lifted his head.

A researcher standing outside the chamber froze.

"That's impossible."

Rei ignored him.

Somewhere very far away—

he could feel an Uzumaki.

And something enormous beside her.

Not fighting.

Not consuming.

Standing with her.

⸻

A faint smile appeared on Rei's face.

"So…"

His voice was weak.

But his own.

"…you finally learned to ask him."

The monitoring seals exploded.

And for the first time in years—

Rei Uzumaki laughed.
