The heavy, humid air of the soundstage was thick with the kind of electric anticipation that only ever accompanied the final moments of a grueling, months-long production.
The blinding, high-wattage overhead lights beat down on the meticulously crafted set, illuminating the exhausted but hopeful faces of the hundreds of crew members who had practically lived in this warehouse for the better part of a year.
Standing in the center of it all, covered in the artificial dust and sweat of her character's final, climactic scene, Emma Myers waited with bated breath.
"Cut!" the director's voice boomed over the main microphone, the sound echoing sharply against the cavernous metal walls of the studio.
For a split second, there was absolute, pin-drop silence.
Then, a massive, triumphant grin broke across the director's face. He raised the microphone back to his lips.
"Ladies and gentlemen, that is a picture wrap on the final day for the incredibly talented Emma Myers! Hope we see you in the premiere looking spectacular!"
The sheer volume of the cheers that erupted from the crew was deafening. It started as a ripple of applause and instantly transformed into a roaring standing ovation.
Grips, gaffers, makeup artists, and camera operators all dropped what they were doing to clap and holler. Emma felt a sudden, overwhelming rush of emotion, her hands flying to her mouth as her eyes welled up with happy tears.
She bowed slightly, laughing through the overwhelming noise.
Suddenly, a massive, heavily tattooed arm wrapped around her shoulders, nearly lifting her off her feet.
Jason Momoa let out a booming, chest-deep laugh that vibrated through her bones, pulling her into a colossal bear hug. "You did it, little sister! Absolutely crushed it. Going to miss having your energy on set!"
Before she could even fully catch her breath from Momoa's crushing embrace, Jack Black bounded over with his signature wild, theatrical energy, practically vibrating with excitement.
He enveloped her in a warm, tight hug, patting her back enthusiastically. "An absolute masterclass in acting, Myers! A masterclass! You're going straight to the top, I'm telling you!"
Despite the immense joy radiating from the cast and crew, as Emma finally managed to extricate herself from the crowd and began the long, quiet walk back toward her personal trailer van, the vibrant smile on her face began to slowly melt away, replaced by a quiet, gnawing melancholy.
The adrenaline of the final take was fading, leaving room for her own personal reality to set in. She pulled her phone from her jacket pocket and stared at the glowing lock screen.
The date glared back at her: Tuesday, April 2nd.
It was her birthday. She was officially a year older. Everyone on set had remembered; she had been showered with well-wishes, cupcakes, and little gifts all morning. But the one person whose wish meant the most to her had been entirely silent. Her boyfriend, Michael.
Emma let out a long, heavy sigh, her boots crunching softly against the gravel of the studio backlot.
She knew, rationally, that they were thousands of miles apart. She was on a remote studio lot, and Michael was notoriously one of the most in-demand, relentlessly busy writers in the world, perpetually locked in his office wrestling with plot holes.
It simply wasn't physically possible for him to just show up and surprise her out of the blue. But what hurt the most wasn't his physical absence; it was the digital one. He hadn't answered a single one of her calls all day. He hadn't replied to her texts.
He hadn't even sent a basic "Happy Birthday" message.
And what made the silence infinitely worse, was that today wasn't just her birthday. It was his birthday, too.
April 2nd.
Their shared day. How could he possibly forget or ignore something so monumental to both of them? A flare of genuine anger sparked in her chest. She aggressively shoved her phone back into her pocket, her jaw clenching tightly. She desperately hoped he had a phenomenally good reason for this icy attitude, because right now, she was furious.
She finally reached her sleek, black production van. Grabbing the heavy metal handle, she yanked the door open and stepped up into the dark, quiet interior, exhausted to her very core.
She reached out blindly, her fingers brushing against the plastic switch to turn on the overhead cabin lights.
With a soft click, the interior of the van was flooded with warm, golden light.
Emma froze. Her heart practically stopped in her chest.
There, positioned perfectly in the center of the van's small lounge area, was Michael.
He was dressed impeccably in a sharp, dark suit that perfectly complimented his features, and he was down on one knee. His eyes, full of deep, unwavering affection, were locked directly onto hers.
Resting gently in the palm of his hand was a small, unmistakable, luxurious robin's-egg-blue box from Tiffany & Co. The lid was open, and resting against the plush black velvet inside was the most dazzling, slick, diamond-encrusted pendant she had ever seen.
As she stared at it, her mind barely processing the reality of the situation, she realized the pendant was custom-shaped to spell her name.
For a full three seconds, Emma just stared, paralyzed by pure shock.
Then, the realization hit her like a freight train. She let out a piercing, ear-splitting scream that echoed off the walls of the van.
She dropped her bag, slapped her hands against her cheeks, and actually started jumping up and down in the confined space, her previous anger evaporating into thin air.
"You came! Oh my god, you actually came!" she screamed, the tears she had been holding back finally spilling over her eyelashes.
Michael's lips curved into a soft, breathtakingly handsome smile.
He didn't break eye contact as he spoke, his voice smooth and deeply resonant. "Cara mia, wherever you go, I will be there to see those beautiful eyes."
Emma covered her mouth, trying to stifle her happy sobs as Michael slowly stood up from his knee. He stepped closer to her, his tall frame dwarfing hers in the small space of the van.
He held the open Tiffany box out slightly.
"Can I put the pendant on you?" he asked, his tone laced with absolute reverence.
Emma couldn't even formulate words.
She simply nodded furiously, her curls bouncing around her shoulders. She quickly turned her back to him.
She felt Michael's warm, familiar fingers gently brush against her skin, sending a shiver directly down her spine. The cool metal of the delicate chain settled perfectly against her collarbone, and she heard the soft, tiny click of the clasp securing the jewelry in place.
Michael placed his hands gently on her shoulders and turned her back around to face him. His eyes scanned her face, taking in her flushed cheeks and wide, happy eyes, before dropping to admire the shimmering pendant resting against her chest.
Without another word, they leaned in simultaneously. Their lips met in a deeply tender, passionate, and incredibly soft kiss that seemed to wash away all the exhaustion and frustration of the past several months apart.
When they finally pulled away, resting their foreheads together, Emma's breathing was shallow.
A sudden wave of guilt washed over her as she remembered her own lack of preparation.
"But... I didn't buy you anything for your birthday," she whispered, her voice laced with regret. "We were so far from each other, both working so hard, that I thought I still had time to figure something out."
Michael let out a low, rich chuckle that rumbled in his chest. He reached up, cupping her cheek with one hand and brushing a stray tear away with his thumb.
"No need, Emma. You are everything I need. Just seeing you tonight is the only gift I wanted."
Emma smiled, leaning her face into his palm. "We have to celebrate. We'll go to a good restaurant tonight. The best one we can find. And tomorrow... tomorrow we leave for Orlando together."
"Home it is," Michael agreed seamlessly.
With their fingers tightly interlaced, anchored to one another after months of distance, they stepped down out of the van together, the warm California night air greeting them.
They began walking across the dimly lit asphalt toward where Michael had parked his car, enveloped in their own perfect bubble.
Just then, the crunch of gravel behind them broke the silence, followed by a deeply familiar, boisterous voice calling out through the shadows.
"Michael?"
