But it was too late. She was a step too late.

Staring at the blood-soaked bathroom floor, Moira Irving froze. That friend of hers had been just like her—an orphan. But Moira was luckier; she at least had her grandparents. Her friend had had no one.

By the time they got her to the hospital, it was too late to save her.

On a table, Moira Irving found a letter addressed to her. Clutching that letter, she cried for a full day and night.

From that day forward, she closed off her heart and never made another friend.

Then, when she got into college, she ended up in the same dorm room as Zoe Zigner. In truth, as much as she hated Zoe, she hated herself more. So, she used the daily agony of living under the same roof with Zoe as a way to torture herself.
