Chapter 27 - THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

The crane's steel cable stretched beneath the tremendous force.

Sparks flew from the emergency winch.

The metal beam groaned as Dreadclaw unleashed another burst of kinetic energy.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The beam shifted.

A section of the reinforced roadside structure collapsed.

Dreadclaw roared as he forced his right arm upward.

"You thought you could imprison me with scrap metal?"

His armor glowed like a furnace.

"I AM DREADCLAW!"

Madu Enoch stood behind the damaged crane control platform.

His mind was working at full capacity.

The beam would fail soon.

The emergency brake was under extreme strain.

The magnetic anchors were holding, but their connections were beginning to loosen.

And Dreadclaw's energy discharge was becoming increasingly unstable.

Madu had one chance.

He studied the villain's position.

Dreadclaw's left shoulder was pinned beneath the beam.

His damaged right arm was trapped against the reinforced structure.

His legs remained free, but his balance was compromised by the wet pavement.

The armor's stabilizers were malfunctioning.

Every major discharge forced the damaged system to compensate for the uneven distribution of energy.

The villain was becoming more dangerous.

But he was also becoming less stable.

Madu looked toward the crane's emergency control panel.

If I release the brake, the beam will fall.

If I maintain the brake, the cable may snap.

If I pull the beam sideways, Dreadclaw could escape.

The counter must exploit the instability without causing a catastrophic discharge.

He examined the crane's control system.

Then he looked at the damaged forearm.

A new idea emerged.

Madu didn't need to increase the force holding Dreadclaw down.

He needed to change the direction in which the force acted.

He moved to the emergency control panel and activated the lateral winch.

The crane's secondary cable tightened.

The beam shifted sideways.

Dreadclaw's body twisted.

His damaged arm was forced against the reinforced structure at an angle that prevented him from raising it properly.

"What are you doing?" the villain screamed.

Madu activated the electromagnetic pulse device again.

A blue flash spread across the damaged armor.

The stabilizers flickered.

Dreadclaw's energy discharge faltered.

His next blast erupted unevenly, sending a wave of force into the pavement beside him.

KABOOOOOM!

The explosion threw debris into the air.

But the main force traveled away from the surrounding buildings.

Dreadclaw groaned.

His armor went dark for a moment.

Madu released the lateral winch and activated the emergency locking mechanism.

The beam settled into a reinforced position.

Dreadclaw was trapped.

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Then the villain began laughing.

"You think you've won?"

Madu approached carefully.

Dreadclaw's eyes burned with hatred.

"You've only defeated me because you had equipment and time to prepare!"

Madu nodded.

"You're right."

Dreadclaw stopped laughing.

Madu continued.

"I had equipment. I had time. I had access to the environment. And I had the opportunity to study your abilities."

He looked at the wreckage around them.

"You had superior strength, greater durability, and enough destructive power to level this entire intersection."

He paused.

"But you assumed those advantages made you unbeatable."

Madu stepped closer.

"You never considered that your power could be manipulated through its own limitations."

Dreadclaw clenched his fists.

"I'LL KILL YOU!"

Madu immediately stepped back.

The villain's right hand began glowing again.

Madu's expression hardened.

"Don't."

Dreadclaw struggled against the beam.

Metal groaned.

The structure shook.

Madu raised his wrist device.

"If you release another maximum-output attack, the damaged stabilizers may fail completely. I can't predict the exact result, but it could trigger an uncontrolled discharge."

Dreadclaw glared at him.

"You wouldn't dare let me die!"

Madu shook his head.

"I don't want you to die."

He gestured toward the surrounding destruction.

"I want this to end before someone else gets hurt."

Dreadclaw looked around.

For the first time, he seemed to notice the full extent of the damage.

Destroyed vehicles.

Collapsed streetlights.

Shattered windows.

The enormous crater where the road had once been.

His expression remained angry, but uncertainty had entered his eyes.

Madu lowered his wrist.

"You can keep fighting, but you're injured, your armor is unstable, and your attacks are becoming harder to control."

He extended one hand.

"Or you can surrender."

Dreadclaw stared at him.

For several seconds, the only sounds were the distant sirens and the crackling of damaged electrical equipment.

Then the villain lowered his head.

His right hand stopped glowing.

Madu released a breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

He activated his communication device.

"Emergency services, this is Madu Enoch. Dreadclaw has been contained at the Victoria Island intersection."

A voice answered.

"Confirm his condition."

"Alive. Conscious. His armor is damaged and potentially unstable. Send a reinforced containment team and medical personnel."

"Understood. Units are approaching."

Madu disconnected the call.

He looked down at Dreadclaw.

"That wasn't so difficult, was it?"

Dreadclaw glared at him.

"Don't speak to me."

Madu shrugged.

"Fair enough."

He turned away and began walking toward the emergency workers.

Every step reminded him of the damage he had sustained.

His ribs hurt.

His shoulder throbbed.

His wrist device was almost completely destroyed.

He had survived, but only by a narrow margin.

He looked back at the enormous crater.

My calculations were accurate enough to identify a solution.

But the execution was far from perfect.

He examined his damaged equipment.

I need better armor, more reliable tools, and improved methods for analyzing unfamiliar abilities.

Madu had won the fight.

But he understood that victory did not mean his strategy was flawless.

It meant he had found a solution before his available options ran out.

As he approached the emergency workers, a young police officer hurried toward him.

"You're Madu Enoch, aren't you?"

Madu glanced at him.

"Depends who's asking."

The officer laughed nervously.

"We've heard stories about you. People say you can figure out how to defeat anyone."

Madu shook his head.

"People exaggerate."

"But you defeated Dreadclaw!"

"Yes."

"How?"

Madu looked back toward the intersection.

"By paying attention."

He continued walking.

The officer watched him disappear into the crowd.

But Madu didn't notice the figure standing on a nearby rooftop.

The stranger wore a white mask decorated with a single black symbol.

He had watched the entire fight.

Every attack.

Every countermeasure.

Every moment when Madu had been forced to adapt.

A small device in his hand displayed a record of the battle.

SUBJECT: MADU ENOCH

ABILITY: HYPER INTELLIGENCE

OBSERVED CAPABILITIES:

- Rapid combat analysis.

- Adaptive countermeasure development.

- Environmental tactical manipulation.

- Predictive reasoning.

- Improvised equipment deployment.

The masked figure reviewed the footage.

Then he smiled.

"So the rumors were true."

A second figure emerged from the shadows behind him.

"Should we eliminate him?"

The masked man shook his head.

"No."

He enlarged an image of Madu standing over Dreadclaw.

"Someone with that ability could become a serious problem for our organization."

"Then why leave him alive?"

The masked man turned toward the distant city skyline.

"Because I want to understand his limits."

He tapped his device.

A new file appeared on the screen.

OPERATION COUNTERPOINT

PHASE ONE: OBSERVE SUBJECT IN COMBAT. — COMPLETE

PHASE TWO: TEST ADAPTIVE LIMITATIONS. — AUTHORIZED

The second figure studied the screen.

"What kind of opponent would challenge him?"

The masked man remained silent for several seconds.

Then he opened another file.

It contained images of several individuals.

One could manipulate gravity.

Another could create illusions that affected every human sense.

A third appeared to possess the ability to alter the properties of matter.

But the final image was different.

It showed a man standing in a completely white room.

No visible weapons.

No armor.

No unusual physical characteristics.

Just an ordinary-looking man wearing a dark suit.

Beneath the image were four words.

ABILITY: UNKNOWN — CLASSIFICATION PENDING.

The masked figure smiled.

"Someone whose abilities cannot be understood through observation alone."

He closed the file.

"Let's see how Madu Enoch handles an enemy who knows he's being analyzed."

Far below, Madu reached the emergency medical station.

He sat on a stretcher while a paramedic examined his shoulder.

His wrist device lay beside him, completely inactive.

He stared at the dark screen.

For a moment, he allowed himself to relax.

He had survived his first major battle.

He had defeated a dangerous villain.

And he had discovered something important about his power.

Hyper intelligence wasn't simply the ability to know the answer.

It was the ability to find a path forward when every obvious solution failed.

Madu looked toward the skyline.

Somewhere in the World, other threats were waiting.

He didn't know about Operation Counterpoint.

He didn't know that someone had studied every move he had made.

And he certainly didn't know that his next opponent might possess an ability that challenged the very foundation of his combat strategy.

But he would learn.

He would adapt.

And he would develop new counters.

Because Madu Enoch had made one decision that would define his future.

No matter how powerful his enemies became, he would never stop searching for a way to defeat them.
