Chapter 75 - Chapter 75: Mealtime

In the natural world, the larger a biological individual is, the more terrifying its strength tends to be. It was a simple principle: the greater the size, the greater the power. A creature of such massive proportions consumed an immense amount of energy just by walking.

To sustain that consumption, these giants had to find vast quantities of food, leading them to claim larger territories. Consequently, the cruel struggle for survival in nature was omnipresent.

The discovery of that giant footprint made Hisoka wary of this uninhabited island. He couldn't be certain if it was just a single massive Pokémon or an entire tribe. If it was a lone individual, that was one thing, but if it was a whole group, Hisoka would have to keep a very low profile.

A Pokémon of that size could use an Earthquake that would leave a person with nowhere to run. If an entire group were provoked, a collective Earthquake might even sink the entire island.

Hisoka temporarily abandoned his plan to scout the island. Having just survived a life-or-death crisis and drifted at sea for an unknown amount of time, both his mental state and physical stamina had reached their limits.

As a precaution, Hisoka released Weavile and Lulu. Experience had taught him that when surviving in the wilderness alone, it was best not to keep Pokémon in their Poké Balls. In an emergency or during a sudden attack, one might not have the time to bring them out.

Weavile had not participated in the earlier battle against Gyarados, and having rested in her Poké Ball, she was currently full of energy and alert. Lulu, however, had consumed a great deal of mental energy by Teleporting five people at once. Although she had rested for a while in her Poké Ball, she still seemed groggy and sleepy.

Hisoka picked Lulu up and placed her on his shoulder. The little girl wrapped her arms around her master's neck, nuzzling her head against his ear before drifting back to sleep.

With Lulu asleep, Hisoka lost his versatile "little chef," and had to handle the cooking himself. He hadn't had a drop of water all night. He hadn't noticed it before, but now that he had relaxed, hunger surged through him like a tide, crashing against his stomach.

Fortunately, the world was gifted with the great invention known as the Space-folding Backpack. Hisoka sighed with relief as he pulled a pocket-sized refrigerator from his bag. It was solar-powered and could run for two weeks on a full charge; if it ran out of juice, simply leaving it in the sun would suffice. It was incredibly convenient.

A folding table, a folding chair, a small gas canister, a frying pan, a pressure cooker... nothing was missing. Hisoka's backpack was like a magic chest from which he could produce anything.

Weavile was highly vigilant and didn't even need Hisoka's orders. After a quick scan of the surroundings to ensure there were no immediate threats, she jogged to the tallest coconut tree. Digging her sharp claws into the bark, she leaped several times until she reached the canopy. Standing tall at the top, Weavile acted like an elite sentry, scouting the perimeter for Hisoka.

Lunch was simple. Both Hisoka and Weavile were carnivores. He took some steaks out of the fridge, thawed them, and threw them straight into the pan. He tossed the remaining beef bones into the pressure cooker with some vegetables and medicinal herbs to make soup. Then, he had Weavile knock down a few fresh coconuts from the tree, and lunch was ready.

"Weavile, time to eat!" Hisoka waved to the canopy as he set the steaks and soup on the table. Weavile nodded slightly, flexed her lithe body, and leaped from the coconut tree back onto the sand.

Hisoka placed two large coconuts and one small one before her. Understanding his silent request, Weavile extended a single sharp claw and traced a perfect circle on the top of each coconut. With a sharp tap on the lidpop!a hole appeared in each. Instantly, the fragrance of coconut milk filled the air.

Hisoka woke the groggy Lulu and handed the smallest coconut to her with a straw. Lulu's lunch consisted of a Berry Salad and some specialized Pokéblocks for Psychic-type Pokémon. Her mental energy had been heavily depleted, and common food wouldn't restore it quickly enough; she needed the Pokéblocks to supplement her recovery.

Lulu sipped the pure, natural coconut milk slowly and used a small fork to take delicate bites of a Pecha Berry. From a distance, she looked like a well-bred noble lady having lunch, a picture of grace.

Hisoka and Weavile were far less refined. Each had a half-pound medium-rare steak seasoned with cumin and chili. They also shared a large bowl of beef bone herbal soup. Their eating habits were rather crude. Driven by hunger, Hisoka didn't bother with a knife and fork, tearing into the steak with his bare hands. He could always wash up afterward; the priority was filling his stomach.

Weavile followed his example perfectly. She used her razor-sharp claws to slice the steak in two, then grabbed a piece in each hand, eating with such gusto that her mouth was slick with grease.

Finally, after downing a large bowl of the soup, Hisoka let out a satisfied burp. He felt truly alive again; the feeling of an empty stomach was truly miserable.

After their meal, the trio lay down to rest on the sand, which had been warmed by the sun. Hisoka rested his head on his hands, donned a pair of sunglasses, and lay beneath a coconut tree. Lulu stretched out her tiny body and curled up on his stomach.

Bound by her duty as a sentry, Weavile returned to the top of the tree to keep watch.

It looks like I need to move up my plans to capture a reconnaissance specialist, Hisoka thought as he stroked Lulu's smooth hair.

What kind of Pokémon was best suited for scouting? The first requirement was flight. There were many treacherous terrains that could not be reached by land, and flying Pokémon simplified things immensely. Many Bug-type and bird Pokémon met this criterion. However, being able to fly was just the baseline; the scout also had to fly high and fast.

This requirement disqualified many Bug-type Pokémon. Their thin wings only supported low-altitude flight, and they struggled to perform in harsh weather like storms or rain.
