Chapter 50 - The Smaller Award

Two students were arguing over the last place on a stores assignment when I reached the mission board. By the time the attendant came out to settle it, a third had signed beneath both their names.

I stayed back until they moved.

The work I could do with one unreliable hand was largely gone. Inventory assistance had a line through it. The evening copying list was full. There were still places for hauling equipment, which seemed a poor use of the academy's equipment.

Near the bottom of the board, a new sheet offered contribution credit for a supervised practical. Three lines described the full-output station; fewer described an observation bench. The larger award was enough to make me read the first option twice.

A boy beside me put his name down for the full task without taking the explanatory sheet. He had to lean across my shoulder to reach the pen. I stepped back and let him finish.

"Have you done it before?" I asked.
