Chapter 58 - After the Needle Fell

The assistant gave me a diagram with a clean drawing of a hand resting flat against the receiving plate.

I put my medical sheet over that part.

The hand in the drawing had no reason to hesitate. Its fingers lay straight, its wrist followed a neat line from the sleeve and the whole palm occupied the plate. I could have placed my own hand beside it and covered barely any of the difference that mattered.

The assistant looked at the sheet I had put down.

"The diagram comes back at the end."

"I won't mark it."

That had not been what I meant by covering the hand, but I did not explain. I moved the medical sheet enough to leave the station number visible. The assistant had other things to arrange before we began.
