Chapter 13 - chapter 13: The Man From Her Past

Serena was beginning to learn Adrian's routine.Wake early.Work out.Read reports.Minimal conversation.Maximum discipline.Everything about him was controlled.Predictable.Safe.Which was exactly why she wasn't prepared for chaos to enter the mansion that morning.Serena was having breakfast alone when Margaret approached her carefully."Mrs. Kingston… there is someone here asking to see you."Serena looked up."Me?""Yes.""Did he give you a name?"Margaret hesitated."He said his name is Jason Cole."The name hit her like cold water. Her fingers tightened around her coffee cup.Jason.Her past. Her mistake. Her lesson."Tell him I'm not available."Margaret nodded and turned toward the entrance. But before she could take another step, a familiar voice echoed through the hall."Serena, we need to talk."Serena slowly stood.Jason had already walked inside.Uninvited.Unwelcome.He looked almost exactly as she remembered.Handsome.Well dressed.Confident.Except this time, there were cracks beneath the confidence. His eyes moved across the mansion, taking in the expensive furniture, the enormous staircase, the staff.Calculating."So it's true," he said.Serena's expression remained calm."You shouldn't be here.""You married him?""Yes.""That was fast.""Life moves."Jason gave a humorless laugh."You could have told me you were aiming this high."Serena's eyes hardened."I wasn't.""Come on, Serena. You always had ambition.""Not like yours."The words landed harder than she intended.Jason's smile disappeared. He sighed."Look… I made a mistake."Serena almost laughed."You made a choice.""It wasn't that simple.""It was."He looked away for a moment. Then lowered his voice."I can fix this.""Fix what?""Us."Silence filled the room.Serena stared at him as though he had just spoken another language."There is no us."Jason stepped closer."You're really going to pretend this is real?""It is real.""You think he loves you?"The question didn't hurt. Not anymore.Serena answered calmly."Love wasn't part of the agreement."Jason blinked."Agreement?"His eyes narrowed. Then he took another step."So it's a contract?"Serena said nothing. Her silence told him everything.A slow smile appeared on his face."Then it's simple. Contracts end."Serena's voice became colder."So do second chances."Jason's expression tightened."Serena, listen—"He reached for her wrist. Before he could touch her, a voice cut through the room."Remove your hand."The temperature seemed to drop.Jason froze.Serena turned.Adrian stood at the entrance.Still.Composed.Dangerously calm. His gaze was fixed on Jason's hand.Jason slowly released her. Then forced a smile."You must be the husband."Adrian walked toward them.Every step was measured."And you must be the mistake."Silence.Jason's jaw tightened."We have history."Adrian stopped a few feet away."You have five seconds.""Or?"Adrian's expression didn't change."Or you discover how seriously I take trespassing."Jason swallowed. Then tried another approach."You know she's only here for money, right?"Wrong move.Serena saw it immediately.Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to."Security."Two guards appeared almost instantly.Jason's confidence cracked."You can't block her past."Adrian looked at him coldly."I can control her present."Jason glanced at Serena."Serena… when this fake marriage ends, you'll come back."She didn't hesitate."No."His face tightened."Why not?"Serena looked directly into his eyes."Because I learned my worth the day you priced me."Jason went silent. For once, he had nothing to say.Adrian gave the slightest nod toward security."Take him out."The guards moved forward.Jason resisted for a moment, but there was no point. As he was escorted toward the door, he looked back at Serena."This isn't over."Serena didn't answer. She didn't need to.The doors closed behind him.Silence returned to the mansion.Adrian turned toward Serena."Are you alright?""Yes.""Did he hurt you?""No."A pause. Then Serena added quietly,"Just my expectations."Something shifted in Adrian's expression."He won't bother you again."Serena studied him."You sound certain.""I am."She didn't ask how. Some things were better left unknown.Instead, she said softly,"Thank you.""It's my responsibility."Serena watched him for a moment."You always say that.""Because it's true."She shook her head."No."That caught his attention."No?""You don't just act from responsibility."Adrian said nothing.Because, for the first time, he wasn't completely certain of his own motives.Serena walked away.Adrian remained where he was.His eyes followed her until she disappeared around the corner.Only then did he look down at his hand.He had never cared who touched his employees.Never cared who insulted him.Never cared about another man's intentions toward a woman. But seeing Jason grab Serena had triggered something immediate.Sharp.Unpleasant.Possessive.Unfamiliar.Later, inside his office, Adrian stood by the window. His reflection stared back at him.He finally said the word aloud."Jealousy."He disliked the sound of it.He disliked even more that it was true.Across the mansion, Serena sat quietly in her room. She should have been thinking about Jason.Instead, she was thinking about Adrian. For the first time since her relationship had ended, she felt safe. Not because Adrian loved her.He didn't.Not because he had promised forever. He hadn't.But because when someone from her past tried to make her feel powerless again…Adrian had stood beside her without asking for anything in return. That frightened her.Because protection could become comfort.Comfort could become trust. And trust could become something neither of them had included in their contract.Serena looked toward the door."I'm in trouble," she whispered. She wasn't talking about Jason. She was talking about Adrian. And somewhere else in the mansion, Adrian was reaching the same conclusion.Their contract had been designed to prevent feelings. But neither of them had considered what would happen when protecting each other started feeling natural. And that was far more dangerous than either of them realized.
