Phoenix narrowed his eyes, a dangerous, arrogant smirk playing on his lips as he stepped out to block the exit.
"What do you think you're doing?" Phoenix demanded, his voice dripping with condescension. "And where do you think you're going with him?"
Raphael stood firm, holding the traumatized girl with one arm and dragging Silver Hawk's limp, broken body in his other grasp. "Your partner over here attacked this poor girl," Raphael said, his tone icy and unyielding. "I'm taking him to the police station for the crimes he committed, and I'm taking her to the hospital to get some help. If you guys can call Victor at the hero organization, let them know what he did."
Falcon Man gasped, his voice cracking as he screamed, "Liar! He's lying! Silver Hawk would never do anything like that!"
"I'm not lying!" Raphael shouted back, his eyes flashing with raw fury. "I saw it with my own eyes! He was taking his clothes off as he was attacking her! What's taking you so long?! Didn't you hear a word I just said?! Call Victor! Call someone from the Superhero Organization right now!"
Falcon Man stumbled a step back, the color draining completely from his face as pure panic set in. He looked between Raphael and Silver Hawk's broken, limp frame, completely shaken.
"I... I don't know what to do..." Falcon Man stammered, his hands trembling as he stared at his partner. "Arrest a hero...? That's... that's never happened before. What if I get in trouble for this?! I was right here with him in this district... we aren't even supposed to be assigned to this sector! We already lied on the official paperwork just to come here..."
Phoenix, however, didn't even flinch. "You can't do that," he sneered, his voice laced with cold contempt. "You cannot arrest a superhero. Especially someone in your position."
"What do you mean you don't care?!" Raphael yelled, his voice echoing across the empty pavement. "Did you not hear a word I said?! He was attacking her!"
"I don't care!" Phoenix shouted back, waving his hand with utter disdain. "Who is she anyway? A peasant? A nobody! Listen to me, kid. Let's both walk our separate ways. You let him go, hand her over to me, and I'll take her to the Superhero Organization so we can handle this the right way."
The young woman trembled violently, wrapping her arms around Raphael and clinging to him with every ounce of strength her shattered spirit had left.
"Please... please don't let me go with them," she sobbed, her voice cracking with raw terror. "Please..."
Raphael shifted his stance, placing his body completely between her and the two heroes. "Neither of them is going anywhere with you."
Phoenix took a slow, menacing step forward, his eyes burning with pure malice. "Listen to me closely, kid. I know you're not a registered superhero. You're breaking the law just standing there. Turning him in won't fix anything it'll just bring severe criminal charges down on your head. Because as far as the public is concerned? What I saw was you brutally attacking an innocent hero while he was trying to save a woman. Or... maybe I didn't see that. Maybe it all goes away."
Phoenix sneered, pointing a mocking, condescending finger at Raphael's battle-torn attire. "If you do what I say and play ball, maybe I can get you into the Superhero Society. I can look at that pathetic trash you're wearing and get you a real suit. A suit like mine. I can get you a high rank in the system. I can give you power, money, influence everything you could ever want."
He gestured toward the terrified girl with open disdain, his tone dripping with hatred. "Why do you care about these citizens anyway? She doesn't give a damn about you! None of them do! They look at us as nothing more than disposable tools to save them, and the second we're done, they forget we even exist. They throw us away like trash, waiting for the next flashy superhero to show up so they can praise them. That's all citizens are ungrateful peasants who exist to worship us. Now hand her and Hawk over to me, and I'll give you a suit and a rank actually worth your power."
Raphael met Phoenix's gaze with cold, unwavering disgust.
"I don't need a new suit. I don't need your rank. I decline your garbage offer," Raphael said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register. "Now get out of my way. Or else."
Phoenix's smirk twisted into a scowl. "So death is what you chose."
In a flash, Phoenix thrust his hand forward. Crimson and orange flames the violent flames of creation erupted from his fist, surging forward like a missile.
Raphael instantly set Silver Hawk down and placed Seraphina behind him, planting his feet firmly into the asphalt. Reverse Counter Flow!
The roaring wall of fire slammed into Raphael's body, but instead of burning him, the kinetic force and elemental flames of creation spun wildly around his frame. He redirected the raw energy, manipulating the rushing inferno as it swirled violently in a vortex around his body.
Seeing Raphael occupied with the inferno, Phoenix manipulated the flames further toward him. As the fire touched the ground, the flames of creation brought the very asphalt to life. Fiery hands erupted from the earth, tightly gripping Raphael's legs.
Phoenix then turned his head and barked, "Falcon Man! Get them!"
Falcon Man hesitated for a fraction of a second, torn by shock, but shoved his doubts down and rushed forward, extending his arms to grab both Silver Hawk and Luma.
Struggling as the living flames clamped onto his legs, Raphael's eyes darted to the side. Seeing Falcon Man closing in, Raphael altered the trajectory of the redirected energy. With a snap of his hands, he unleashed the Reverse Counter Flow, sending the collected explosive force smacking straight into Falcon Man's chest.
BOOM!
As the thick smoke cleared, Falcon Man groaned, struggling back to his feet with his high-tech suit heavily bruised, scorched, and cracked from the blast. Phoenix, completely unharmed by the detonation, simply stepped through the settling dust without a scratch, his expression twisted into a dark scowl.
"It looks like that pathetic nuisance is trying to escape," Phoenix hissed, his eyes tracking the perimeter. "We can't allow him to get away with them. It makes a mockery of the Superhero Society."
Falcon Man hesitated, wiping ash from his cracked visor as a knot of guilt tightened in his chest. "I mean... if he did what he said he did... shouldn't we turn him in?"
Before Falcon Man could blink, Phoenix lunged forward, grabbing him roughly by the collar and slamming him against a standing pillar.
"I know you're a rookie, and you don't know any better," Phoenix whispered, his voice venomous and razor-sharp. "But if you ever question me again as my sidekick, your career is over. You don't speak a single word of what happened tonight. Do you hear me? Now find him."
Phoenix shoved him back, and both heroes launched into the air, their thrusters and fiery trails streaking across the sky as they began scanning the streets below.
Meanwhile, down on the ground, Raphael was already moving. Holding Silver Hawk's limp body with one arm and protecting the girl with the other, he sprinted through the alleys as fast as his drained body could carry him. Spotting an open sewer grate, he slid down the ladder into the dim, subterranean tunnels.
He gently laid Silver Hawk down on the concrete walkway the corrupt hero still completely unconscious.
Luma slumped against the damp brick wall of the sewer tunnel, pulling her knees tightly to her chest as tears streamed down her face.
"I'm so, so sorry..." she sobbed, her whole body trembling violently. "I brought all of this on you... It's all my fault because of what I was wearing. That's why he targeted me... If I hadn't been dressed like this, none of this would have happened! Please... you should just go home. Take their deal and let them have me... I'm not worth you getting hurt or ruined over..."
Raphael knelt down directly in front of her, setting his hands gently near her trembling shoulders. His gaze was warm, solid, and utterly unwavering as he looked into her eyes.
"My name is Hero One. I'm here to help you. What's your name?" he asked softly.
"L-Luma..." she whispered, sniffing back a tear.
"Listen to me, Luma," Raphael continued, his voice carrying the calm, absolute weight of steel. "None of this is your fault. Not what you wore, not where you were, and not what that scoundrel tried to do to you. You did nothing wrong."
He reached out, wiping a tear from her cheek with a steady hand.
"We are going to get justice for what he did to you. I'm not taking their deal, and I am never letting them touch you again. Just stay right here where it's safe and keep quiet. I will handle them."
Raphael stood up, glanced one last time at the knocked-out Silver Hawk, and began climbing back up the sewer ladder to face the skies above.
High above the city, Phoenix and Falcon Man hovered in mid-air, scanning the dark districts below. They had stopped to catch their breath after sweeping the initial zones.
"We searched everywhere in this district," Falcon Man panted, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Where could he be? You think he already left?"
Phoenix narrowed his eyes, a cruel grin spreading across his face. "No. He's still close by. When I shot him with my energy, it left traces around his body. I can sense my own power... he's somewhere right around here."
Suddenly, a faint flash of crimson light cut through the shadows between the skyscrapers.
"There!" Phoenix pointed. "He is!"
Both heroes rocketed forward. Down below, Raphael was flying at Incredible speed through the urban canyons. Seeing them close the gap, Phoenix charged a barrage of fiery energy blasts from his hands and unleashed them downward.
BOOM! BOOM!
The explosions tore through the streets, shattering concrete and sending debris raining down.
Falcon Man glanced over, alarmed by the sheer collateral damage. "Relax! What are you doing? We have to catch him, but you can't just destroy the city for no reason!"
"Shut up," Phoenix snapped without looking back. "We'll just make some excuse in the paperwork say we're chasing down a dangerous villain. We can't allow him to escape no matter what. And that girl... we have to find her. Shut up and keep charging!"
Phoenix hurled another massive energy blast. Raphael twisted in mid-air, spinning to fire a cyclical energy burst of his own. The two attacks collided head-on, detonating in mid-air with a blinding flash. As the dust and smoke cleared, Phoenix and Falcon Man touched down atop a broken, skeletal skyscraper, while Raphael landed on the shattered pavement below.
Phoenix smirked, looking up at the desolate surroundings. "Oh, I see. You flew this direction on purpose. As I can tell, this is already a destroyed part of the district. There are no citizens here this place has been completely abandoned. Good. That means we can kill you without anyone seeing and asking questions."
Raphael stood firm, his breath heavy. "Yeah. I had to get you away from the populated districts of our city. I brought you to one of the already-destroyed zones that happened when the Demon King attacked. I advise you to leave me alone. This has nothing to do with y'all. Your friend did something wrong, and he has to pay for it."
"This has everything to do with us," Phoenix snarled, taking a menacing step forward. "If one hero especially an S-Class looks bad, we all look bad. The Superhero Society wears an image, a suit that must be protected at all costs. And you can be a part of that. I can make you one." He pointed boastfully at his own gleaming, immaculate attire. "The suit of the Great Phoenix."
"I don't care about your suits," Raphael replied, his voice icy and deadpan. "I care about justice. Justice for Seraphina, and accountability for what your friend did to her."
Phoenix shook his head with pitying condescension. "The suit is just as important as justice. The suit represents your power. It's what the people see it's what defines you. That's what a hero truly is: a symbol, an image that the citizens look up to as justice itself. And you want to tear that down? Think about the chaos you'll cause. Not just for yourself, but for that girl."
Phoenix spread his arms wide, his tone dripping with false benevolence. "Don't be a fool. Hand Seraphina and Silver Hawk over to me, take my offer, and I'll construct a suit that the entire world will revere. You can join the Superhero Society. I see incredible potential in you you could even replace Silver Hawk as my new second-in-command! Together, we can rise to the top. Our suits will shine above all others, and the world will view us as the ultimate authority on justice. That is true freedom."
Raphael looked down at his battle-torn, dust-caked clothes. His body was exhausted, and his healing factor was recovering sluggishly against the toll of battle, but his eyes burned with a fierce, unwavering conviction.
"A suit doesn't define who I am," Raphael said softly, stepping forward. "My actions do. I refuse your pathetic offer. And if you're going to stand there and defend a scoundrel like him... then I'm right here."
Raphael dropped into a low, deadly fighting stance.
Phoenix's expression hardened into pure malice. "Fine. Then you die here. Your suit will burn, never to be seen by the public, never to receive their fame. Falcon Man... kill him. Go."
Falcon Man surged forward with a burst of flight. Mid-air, he dropped into a low, fluid fighting stance, entering the refined postures of the Wind Style martial arts. High-pressure wind currents whipped viciously around his wrists, ankles, and fists, warping the atmosphere around his body into sharp, razor-thin blades. Slapping his palms together against the rushing air, he barked, "Summon!"
High above them, the skies ruptured as a massive, terrifying chimeric beast materialized a giant hawk boasting the fierce head of a lion and the thrashing tail of a venomous serpent. The monstrous creature screeched, vaulting directly into the upper clouds to prepare its strike.
While the chimera circled high above, Falcon Man charged Raphael head-on, throwing a relentless barrage of high-speed pressure-blade punches and sweeping kicks. With every missed strike, the pressurized air currents sliced clean through the concrete pillars and steel girders of the ruined building behind them.
"You don't have to do this!" Falcon Man grunted between blows, desperately trying to convince himself as much as Raphael. "Just give up! There's no reason to go against the Superhero Society. I'm sure what you saw wasn't true... I know Silver Hawk. He wouldn't do something like that! She's is lying!"
"She's not lying," Raphael fired back, his tone absolute and unwavering. "And neither am I."
Moving with blinding speed, Raphael slipped inside Falcon Man's guard and struck a precise sequence of pressure points across his torso. Falcon Man gasped as a sharp jolt of pain locked up his nervous system, his breath hitching as the strikes paralyzed his movement.
Before Raphael could land the decisive knockout blow, the giant lion-headed hawk plummeted straight from his blind spot above. Its razor-sharp beak plunged downward, barely piercing into Raphael's stomach as blood welled up and stained the creature's claws.
Raphael let out a sharp gasp of pain as the beast hoisted him into the sky. Gritting his teeth through the searing agony in his abdomen, Raphael twisted violently, pushing himself off the bird to launch upward into the air.
As he gained altitude, the massive chimera unhinged its jaws, unleashing a roaring torrent of bright green flames straight toward him.
Without flinching, Raphael reared back his fist and drove himself straight through the wall of green fire. Bypassing the flames, he struck the creature directly in its eye, driving his knuckle deep into a hidden pressure point at the crown of its head. The giant chimera instantly went limp, dissolving into ash as it plummeted toward the earth.
Raphael hit the rooftop, but Falcon Man was already closing in from behind, forcing his locked muscles to move through sheer adrenaline.
"You should have given up when you had the chance!" Falcon Man roared.
Massive gales of wind swirled around Falcon Man's body, shaping into the razor-sharp silhouette of a diving falcon as he rushed forward to slice Raphael in half.
Thinking a fraction of a second ahead, Raphael dropped back into his stance and thrust his hand forward to meet the oncoming hurricane. Reverse Counter Flow!
He absorbed the raw kinetic force of the gale, dodging the lethal edge of Falcon Man's strike at the absolute last microsecond. Redirecting the pent-up energy, Raphael unleashed a devastating counter-punch straight into Falcon Man's face.
Locked together in sheer momentum, both fighters tumbled off the precipice of the skeletal building, crashing into the ground far below in a massive, earth-shaking explosion of dust, concrete, and shockwaves.
As the thick dust settled, Falcon Man was pinned to the concrete, his arm twisted painfully behind his back with Raphael holding him down in a lock.
"Give up!" Raphael commanded, his voice strained through heavy breaths.
"Get off of me!" Falcon Man screamed, wincing in agony as the torque on his shoulder grew tighter.
High above them in the sky, Phoenix hovered, clapping his hands together in mock applause. "Impressive," Phoenix sneered. "Truly impressive. Too bad the world will never see the full potential of what your suit could have been."
Without another word, Phoenix opened his mouth, charging a blinding sphere of the Flames of Creation before hurling it straight downward toward Raphael.
Raphael reacted instantly, thrusting his palm upward to unleash a concentrated Psycho-Blast. The two attacks collided mid-air, detonating into a massive, blinding explosion.
The violent shockwave scattered the Flames of Creation across the entire ruined district. Raphael looked around, his eyes widening as the fiery embers touched everything nearby. Abandoned cars, rusted girders, and crumbling concrete buildings began to warp and shift. Eyes ignited on their surfaces, and grotesque limbs tore out of the burning metal and stone. From the scorched earth itself, humanoid figures made of earth and living flame dragged themselves into existence.
Raphael stood back up, dropping into a defensive fighting stance as Falcon Man lay groaning on the ground beside him, barely unable to move.
"You can't defeat my suit!" Phoenix laughed hysterically from above, spreading his arms wide like a dark god. "The Flames of Creation... the Flames of the Great Phoenix! Anything my flames touch, I bring to life! I give it spirit! I give it purpose!"
The tide of animated flame-creatures surged forward, screeching as they charged Raphael. Raphael moved with swift precision, striking pressure points and unleashing kinetic blasts to tear through the monsters. But every time he shattered a figure of burning earth or twisted metal, the living fire reformed them instantly, pulling them back together.
Suddenly, Raphael sensed a terrifying surge of energy from above. He looked up and saw Phoenix charging a colossal, sun-like sphere of fire a devastating inferno infused with the unstable, destructive force of antimatter, radiating enough raw power to level the entire sector.
"Are you crazy?!" Raphael yelled, his voice echoing over the roar of the inferno. "That much energy will kill your own sidekick! You're not actually going to shoot that, are you?!"
Phoenix stared down with cold, hollow eyes. "I don't care about him. He's just another sidekick. Sidekicks can be replaced."
Phoenix unleashed the massive sun of fire, sending the antimatter-laced Flames of Creation plunging toward the earth like a falling star.
Raphael didn't hesitate. Moving faster than he ever had before, he smashed through three flame-creatures blocking his path, sprinted to Falcon Man's broken body, and grabbed him tightly. Shielding Falcon Man with his own back, Raphael used the last of his momentum to leap clear of the blast zone just as the energy hit.
BOOOOOOM!
The antimatter explosion detonated upon impact, tearing through the foundations of the sector and reducing the entire district below to an incandescent, hollowed-out crater of melting slag and ash.
Above the smoking abyss, Phoenix cackled wildly, hovering down toward the rim. "Hahaha! I got him! They're both dead!"
"Think again."
Phoenix's eyes snapped wide, but before he could even turn around, Raphael appeared directly in front of his face in a flash of raw speed, his eyes blazing with absolute fury.
Raphael reared his fist back and unleashed a devastating punch. Phoenix's suit reacted automatically, liquid armor surging up instantly from his cosmic spiritual suit to helmet his face.
CRACK!
The punch sent Phoenix flying backward, but Raphael surged forward instantly, raining a furious combination of punches down on him. Phoenix dodged and parried, retaliating with strikes of his own. Raphael took a hit to the chest and immediately countered, landing a solid strike directly on Phoenix's torso only for the blow to accomplish nothing.
Phoenix didn't even budge. A arrogant smirk spread across his face beneath his visor.
"The great suit of the Phoenix grows, adapts, and evolves to protect me," Phoenix boasted, his voice echoing with cosmic power. "It creates whatever is necessary to ensure my absolute safety. Your pathetic punches are useless!"
Phoenix unleashed a lightning-fast flurry of jab and hook combinations straight toward Raphael's head and jaw. With every single blow, razor-sharp spiked spurs materialized across his suit's knuckles, burning white-hot with the Flames of Creation, infused with corruptive anti-life energy. The fiery, anti-life-laced spikes ripped across Raphael's skin at the moment of impact, drawing blood with each heavy hit and suppressing his natural vitality.
"When I'm done with you," Phoenix hissed, "that girl will never see the light of day again!"
"SHUT UP!" Raphael screamed, his pure, raw fury surging as his Battle Spirit energy rose to unprecedented heights.
Funneling every last drop of his overflowing Battle Spirit energy directly into his right fist, Raphael roared, "SPLITTING THE HEAVENS!"
He hurled his fist forward, but Phoenix barely managed to twist away at the absolute last millisecond. Even with that hair's-breadth dodge, Raphael's strike caught him dead-on, driving his fist straight into Phoenix's shoulder armor with absolute, catastrophic force. The kinetic impact hit with such terrifying power that the shockwave split the sky wide open, cracking and fracturing space apart, and reshaping the distant cosmos as a dimensional rift tore directly into the fabric of deep space.
CRACK!
An entire section of Phoenix's cosmic spiritual suit shattered into glowing fragments and dissolved, exposing the bare skin beneath. Crimson blood trickled down Phoenix's arm from the sheer force that bled through his defenses.
Phoenix leapt backward, his eyes wide in absolute disbelief. He touched his shoulder, staring at his own blood, and then looked back at the sky where a massive crack fractured the dimension wide open in the exact wake of Raphael's strike.
Impossible... Phoenix thought, a cold sweat breaking out across his forehead. No one has ever shattered my suit... The dimension itself split from that punch! I can't let him land another clean hit like that. I have to keep my distance!
Raphael charged again, leaving a streak of pure kinetic energy in his wake.
Phoenix's suit shifted instantaneously, transforming his arms into massive, multi-barreled cannons forged from the Flames of Creation. He unleashed a frantic, relentless volley of energy blasts. Raphael dodged through the heavy artillery in mid-air, but several blasts connected, sending him flying backward and driving him up into the upper atmosphere.
Phoenix gave no quarter. Flying right behind him, his suit deployed a swarm of high-yield cosmic rockets, firing them in rapid succession. The volley detonated directly against Raphael, launching him through the vacuum of space until he crashed hard onto a rogue planetoid orbiting the world below.
As Raphael struggled back to his feet on the barren rock, Phoenix drifted down from above, his face contorted in a cruel, confident grin. His shoulder armor was already rapidly weaving itself back together, completely restored.
"You really pack a punch, kid," Phoenix chuckled, dusting off his chest. "But you'll never land another one. And even if you did, it wouldn't matter. My suit evolves from every strike it takes making that same attack completely obsolete the next time it hits me. You stand no chance against me. You should have taken the offer I gave you when you had the chance."
Phoenix narrowed his eyes, his tone shifting into something bitter and resentful. "I used to be just like you. I was a rookie superhero trying to make a name for myself. I saved citizens, and what did I get? Nothing. They didn't care about me they only cared about the top ranks, the strong S-Class heroes. They threw me away like I was trash. So I did everything in my power to gain strength. To force them to give me the respect I deserved to be seen!"
He gestured angrily toward his cosmic attire. "I built the strongest suit I could, but it still wasn't enough to push me past C-Class. My natural power was just too weak. So I left our universe behind, searching through the cosmos for the ultimate material. And that's when I found it an entire universe forged out of an energy known as the Phoenix Force."
Phoenix smirked with pride as he recalled the memory. "I conducted my research there until a cosmic entity materialized and spoke to me. It revealed that it had created and destroyed that entire universe, yet it lacked true purpose. So I made a deal with it. I told the creature I could give it purpose. I molded that infinite energy straight into my suit, giving the Phoenix Force a reason to exist: to protect me and fulfill my ambition. With it, I rose to become one of the absolute strongest heroes. My suit became justice."
He spread his arms wide toward Raphael. "I could have done the exact same thing for you. With the power of the Phoenix, I could have forged you a suit that the entire world would revere. You could have been justice."
Raphael stood firm, his eyes piercing straight through Phoenix's grand speech.
"I don't need a suit built by someone like you," Raphael said quietly, his voice full of absolute conviction. "I don't need armor to hide who I am, nor do I care about tricking people into respecting me. For me, being a hero isn't about getting praise from the crowd or chasing a title. I do this simply to see a smile on their faces when they're safe. My strength comes from within."
Phoenix's face contorted into pure venom. "Then this is where you die."
Phoenix thrust both hands toward the massive planet below them, shooting roaring streams of the Flames of Creation straight into its core.
Raphael looked down in horror as the entire world trembled violently. A colossal, glowing eye opened across the planet's surface, followed by a gaping, cavernous mouth. Jagged mountain ranges shifted and folded over one another, forming enormous, continental hands that reached into space, closing around Raphael like a vice.
"Let's see if you can truly withstand the absolute power of the Flames of Creation! Anything I imagine, I can grant life and spirit! Face the Cosmic Warriors born directly from my infinite imagination and behold as I bestow them with enough cosmic power to crush you into dust!"
Phoenix thrust his hands outward, sending beams of living fire shooting into six other nearby floating planets and moons across the sector. In seconds, the celestial bodies twisted and morphed into colossal, planetary flame-giants, their fiery masses rushing toward the battlefield.
The planetary mountain hand squeezed Raphael with astronomical pressure, attempting to crush his body into fine ash. Raphael screamed in agony, channeling every ounce of his Battle Spirit Energy to its absolute limit. With a blinding surge of power, he forced his limbs outward, bursting through the rock and magma in a catastrophic explosion of energy that completely obliterated the continent-sized arm of the planetary beast.
Freeing himself, Raphael found himself floating in the void of deep space, surrounded on all sides. Seven living, planet-sized Cosmic Flame-Warriors closed in on him, swinging strikes capable of shattering entire star systems. Raphael darted between their cosmic blows, punching straight through their fiery bodies, but as soon as he blasted through them, the Flames of Creation pulled their planetary forms right back together.
Phoenix watched from a safe distance, cackling wildly. "You cannot win this fight! I've fed those Cosmic Flame-Warriors enough energy to fight you for decades! They will regenerate endlessly the Flames of Creation will always bring them back to life!"
Raphael flew straight through the torso of another Cosmic Flame-Warrior, shattering its core, but watched in frustration as the living fire seamlessly re-knit the wound. He closed his eyes, centering his breath and tuning out the chaos of space.
Empty Fist: Stage Two!
His posture shifted into absolute, fluid perfection. Raphael charged back into the fray, striking the giant Cosmic Flame-Warriors with razor-sharp precision. This time, his strikes didn't just smash their physical mass his empty, flowing energy struck the very fundamental function and structure of the Flames of Creation themselves.
With a single focused strike, the first Cosmic Flame-Warrior's flame structure collapsed at its core, unraveling completely and preventing it from reforming. He darted to the second, severing its vital energy flow, then the third, destroying the monstrous titans one by one until the final Cosmic Flame-Warrior dissolved into harmless cosmic dust.
Raphael exhaled, his breathing heavy as he stood floating in the silence of space.
SWOOSH!
Raphael began to turn around, but before he could complete the motion, Phoenix materialized directly behind him. Surging with energy, Phoenix's cosmic spiritual suit expanded, forging a pair of massive, towering arms.
With blinding speed, Phoenix unleashed a furious barrage of heavy blows, his colossal fists raining down on Raphael over and over, driving him backward through space. Raphael tried to throw up a guard, but the sheer momentum of the strikes battered him across the void, pushing them closer and closer toward one of the radiant suns orbiting the world below.
Before Raphael could recover his balance or counter, Phoenix thrust both hands forward. Utilizing the Flames of Creation, he forged a massive, high-density mechanical binding device that clamped violently around Raphael's wrists and ankles, locking him in place and leaving him suspended helplessly in space just miles away from the scorching, white-hot solar flares.
Raphael thrashed with all his strength against the cosmic shackles, but the binding machinery held firm.
Phoenix's cackling laughter echoed through the void. "I gave you a chance, kid! Now it's over!"
Surging with the full output of his cosmic spiritual suit, Phoenix brought his hands together, shaping his living flames into a massive, big fist covered in razor-sharp spikes, looming high above Raphael to deliver the final, absolute blow.
Raphael watched the colossal fist descend in slow motion. Panic surged through his chest I can't move!
Then, flashing in his mind, he saw Seraphina's tear-stained face, her trembling voice begging for help, and the unfair cruelty of the Superhero Society.
I can't lose, Raphael thought, his eyes burning with renewed fire. She deserves justice. I don't care how sore my body is. I'm not losing. I'm never gonna give up!
As the spiked, burning fist closed in, Raphael screamed at the top of his lungs, "SPLITTING THE HEAVENS: HEADBUTT!"
Driving his entire body forward with a desperate burst of willpower, Raphael met Phoenix's incredible strike head-on with a brutal, perfectly executed headbutt.
CRACK!
The impact detonated with immeasurable strength. The massive spikes shattered instantly upon contact, and a catastrophic surge of kinetic energy blasted forward into the void of space, cracking the very fabric of the cosmos around them. The kinetic shockwave tore through the suit, splintering its surface wide open. The raw force bled straight through the armor, shattering the bones in Phoenix's hand as a blood-curdling scream tore from his throat.
Instantly, the cosmic construct holding Raphael's wrists and ankles dissolved into dust.
Phoenix stumbled back, clutching his broken hand in sheer disbelief, staring at his glowing armor in absolute horror. "Impossible... My suit already adapted to your strength! Why isn't my suit healing?! What is this?!"
Before Phoenix could recover, Raphael closed the distance in a blur and unleashed a devastating punch. Phoenix's suit tried to react defensively, instantly forming thick layers of cosmic armor over his face.
"It's pointless!" Phoenix shouted frantically. "My suit will just keep adapting to you!"
Raphael's strike bypassed the suit's brute defense entirely, landing straight on its hidden energy pressure points and completely severing the very flow of its internal energy.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Raphael unleashed a relentless chain of pressure-point strikes, systematically disrupting the suit's internal energy circulation. Under the barrage, Phoenix watched in horror as his adaptive defenses failed to trigger.
"No... No! Impossible!" Phoenix shrieked as Raphael's strikes struck faster and deeper.
With a blinding flash of expelled energy, the cosmic spiritual suit cracked, splintered, and completely ruptured. Fractured shards and broken plates of the cosmic armor broke apart, leaving the debris floating aimlessly in space around them.
Phoenix was left suspended defenseless in the void, stripped of his power, trembling, and entirely exposed. Panic seized him as he stared at Raphael, his arrogant facade completely shattered.
"Stop, please!" Phoenix choked out, his voice shaking with terror as he held his hands up. "We can still work things out! We can change up the deal. You can... you can leave with the girl and Silver Hawk. Just let me go! We can change the deal!"
Suddenly, the crushing gravitational pull and intense solar heat of the nearby star began to take their toll, washing over them in scorching waves. Without his cosmic spiritual suit to insulate him, Phoenix withered rapidly under the extreme radiation, his skin blistering as panic consumed him.
"Help me! Help me, the sun is going to kill me!" Phoenix sobbed, desperately thrashing in the void. "I don't have my suit please, save me!"
Raphael stood over him, his expression cold, unyielding, and absolute.
"You're right," Raphael said quietly, his voice cutting through the silence of space. "We do need to make a new deal. You're coming with me."
Grabbing the helpless, scorched S-Class hero by the collar, Raphael hauled him through the vacuum of space, firing his kinetic thrust back toward the planet's atmosphere.
Moments later, the heavy doors of the local precinct slammed open as Raphael marched in, dragging an unconscious, battered Phoenix and a bruised Silver Hawk behind him, dumping them onto the floor in front of the front desk.
Captain Vaelen bolted up from his chair, his eyed face pale with absolute panic as his glowing red tribal tattoos flared with stress. "Are you out of your mind, kid?! You want me to do what with them? These are two recognized, high-ranking S-Class heroes!"
Vaelen stared down in horror at the disgraced elites lying bound before him. "This is way outside my jurisdiction, One! I told you we could work together on the side, but this... this is complete suicide."
"You have to do something," Raphael insisted, his voice sharp and unrelenting. "Phoenix was assaulting her, and both of them tried to murder me when I stepped in! There has to be something you can do!"
Vaelen rubbed his temples, pacing back and forth behind his desk. "Look, I'm just a precinct captain. I'm not close with Victor or any of the top brass, and I'm sure you know even fewer people in the Superhero Organization than I do. This is miles above my paygrade. If what you're saying is true and considering the rotten rumors I've heard about what these scumbags get away with, I believe you prosecuting them through standard channels is a pipe dream. It won't go anywhere, and it guarantees I'll lose my badge before the ink even dries!"
"So what are you saying?!" Raphael yelled, slamming his fist onto the heavy desk. "You're just going to let them walk?!"
From the floor, Phoenix groaned, his eyes flickering open. Barely conscious, he let out a weak, raspy laugh. "You... you're trying to play hero when you don't even know the rules of this world, kid... You should listen to the Captain right here. We'll be free soon enough..."
Phoenix shot a venomous, bloodshot glare toward the holding cell area where Luma sat watching in silence. "And that girl... you better tell her to keep her mouth shut if she knows what's good for her. And you, Hero One... you better watch your back. Now, unlock these cuffs before."
Before Phoenix could finish his threat, Captain Vaelen marched out from behind the counter, grabbed Raphael firmly by the shoulder, and pulled him toward the precinct exit. "Come on. Step outside with me for a second."
Once they were out in the cool night air away from the precinct lobby, Vaelen lowered his voice, speaking with a grim, exhausted seriousness.
"Listen to me, Hero One. Here's my direct line," Vaelen said, sliding a digital contact card straight into Raphael's palm. "There's an underground safe shelter a few districts over. Take her there directly. Do not take her to the public hospital the hospital administration is already pocketed by the Superhero Organization. They have corporate insurance lawyers waiting in the wings just to bury cases like this. If you want real justice, you have to play it smart. Take her to the shelter tonight. Tomorrow morning, I'll see what strings I can pull behind the scenes. For now, we can't act reckless, or we both end up dead."
Raphael swallowed hard, his fists clenched tight at his sides. "...I understand."
Without wasting another moment, Raphael scooped Luma into his arms and launched into the night air, blurring across the city skyline toward the coordinates Captain Vaelen had provided.
They touched down outside a hidden entrance in a quiet, low-key sector. Raphael gently set Luma down inside the safety of the underground shelter.
"You're safe here," he whispered softly, comforting her. "Keep a low profile you can call your parents, but make sure you don't talk to anyone else about what happened tonight. Captain Vaelen gave me his direct line so we can keep in contact with him. Tomorrow morning, he's going to see what he can do behind the scenes to help us. Me and Vaelen will make sure you get real justice. I promise you."
Tears streamed down Luma's face as she threw her arms around him, burying her face in his jacket and holding on tightly.
Just as Raphael was wrapping his arm around her, his phone vibrated violently in his pocket, emitting a sharp notification chime.
Raphael pulled out his phone and glanced down at the screen. His heart instantly dropped into his stomach he had completely lost track of time. He tapped his screen to check the clock and gasped under his breath.
"Oh no... I forgot!" Raphael thought, panic spiking in his chest. "I'm supposed to be on my lunch break! I gotta hurry up and get back to work!"
He noticed a new, urgent voicemail icon blinking on his screen from his boss at the local Squid Alien-Burger joint. Hitting play, he raised the phone to his ear. His boss's furious, distorted voice practically exploded out of the speaker:
"You're late! You're two minutes late!" his boss screamed through the recording. "If you don't hurry up and get your ass over here right now, you're fired!"
Raphael snapped his phone shut with a heavy sigh, giving Luma one last reassuring nod before turning to speed back toward the restaurant.
