Chapter 18 - The Reward

No one expected it to happen so soon.

Not after what they had just seen.

Not after what they had just lost.

—

The formation held.

Tighter now.

More careful.

Every movement deliberate.

Every conversation forced to stay alive.

—

No one wanted to be the next gap.

—

It was working.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

—

And then—

Something changed.

—

A sound.

Not sharp.

Not sudden.

—

Soft.

—

A low hum.

—

At first, no one reacted.

Because it didn't feel like danger.

—

It felt… different.

—

Mike looked up.

—

"Do you hear that?" Sara asked quietly.

—

He nodded.

Already tracking.

—

The sound wasn't coming from the forest.

—

It was coming from above.

—

The group shifted.

Eyes lifting.

Searching.

—

And then they saw it.

—

A platform.

Descending.

—

Not fast.

Not threatening.

—

Controlled.

Precise.

—

No ropes.

No visible mechanism.

—

Just… lowering itself into the clearing.

—

No one moved toward it.

—

No one dared.

—

Until it stopped.

—

A few feet above the ground.

—

And settled.

—

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Watching.

—

"What is that?" someone whispered.

—

No one answered.

—

Because they all felt it.

—

This wasn't random.

—

This was intentional.

—

The platform clicked softly.

—

And opened.

—

Inside—

Food.

—

Fresh.

Clean.

Organized.

—

Far better than anything they had been given so far.

—

Water.

Sealed containers.

—

And something else.

—

A small, enclosed structure behind it.

—

A shelter.

—

Perfectly intact.

Untouched.

Safe.

—

The reaction was immediate.

—

Hope.

—

Real.

Dangerous.

—

"They're helping us," someone said.

—

"No," Mike said quietly.

—

But his voice didn't carry far enough.

—

Because people were already moving.

—

Not all.

But enough.

—

Jules stepped forward.

"Wait," he said sharply.

—

But even he hesitated.

—

Because it looked like help.

—

Susan stepped closer too.

Slower.

More cautious.

—

"This doesn't make sense," she said.

—

Kwame moved ahead of both of them.

Curiosity overriding hesitation.

—

"Only one way to find out," he said.

—

Mike's eyes locked onto him.

—

"Stop," he said.

—

Kwame didn't.

—

He stepped onto the platform.

—

Nothing happened.

—

No disappearance.

No reaction.

—

He turned back.

Grinning slightly.

—

"It's fine," he said.

—

And then—

He picked up one of the containers.

—

Still nothing.

—

Relief spread.

Fast.

—

Too fast.

—

People started stepping forward now.

—

Mike moved.

Cutting across.

—

"Wait," he said again.

—

This time louder.

—

Kwame paused.

—

"What?" he asked.

—

Mike's gaze shifted.

Not to him.

—

To the others.

—

"How many of us stepped forward?" Mike asked.

—

No one answered.

—

Because they hadn't counted.

—

Mike had.

—

"Not everyone," he said.

—

That slowed things.

—

Just slightly.

—

"So?" someone said.

—

Mike stepped closer.

Eyes still scanning.

—

"This isn't for all of us."

—

Silence.

—

Kwame frowned.

—

"What are you talking about?"

—

Mike looked at the platform.

Then at the shelter.

Then back at Kwame.

—

"Step off," he said.

—

Kwame hesitated.

—

"Why?"

—

"Just do it."

—

A pause.

—

Then Kwame stepped back.

Off the platform.

—

The moment his foot left—

—

The platform shifted.

—

A soft sound.

—

And then—

It rose.

—

Fast.

—

The food.

The water.

The shelter—

—

Gone.

—

Just like that.

—

The clearing froze.

—

"What—"

—

"It's selection," Mike said.

—

No hesitation now.

—

"They're rewarding behavior."

—

"Whose behavior?" someone asked.

—

Mike's eyes moved back to Kwame.

—

"Yours."

—

Kwame stared at him.

—

"I didn't do anything special—"

—

"You tested the system," Mike said.

—

Silence.

—

That landed.

—

Because it made sense.

—

Kwame had stepped forward first.

—

Acted.

—

Taken risk.

—

And for a moment—

—

He had been rewarded.

—

The realization spread.

—

Not slowly.

—

Instantly.

—

"They're watching for actions," someone said.

—

"And rewarding them," another added.

—

"Not everyone," Mike said.

—

His voice steady.

—

"Individually."

—

That changed everything.

—

Because now—

Survival wasn't just about avoiding disappearance.

—

It was about earning advantage.

—

And advantage—

—

Couldn't be shared.

—

The shift in the group was immediate.

Subtle.

But real.

—

People looked at each other differently now.

—

Not just as allies.

—

But as competition.

—

Susan saw it first.

—

"No," she said.

—

Firm.

—

"We don't turn this into that."

—

But her voice didn't hold the same weight.

—

Because the idea was already there.

—

"What if next time it stays?" someone said.

—

"What if you don't step off?" another added.

—

"What if only one person can take it?"

—

The questions came faster now.

—

More dangerous.

—

Jules stepped forward.

—

"We don't break formation," he said.

—

But even he glanced at the sky.

—

Just for a second.

—

Mike noticed.

—

Sara stepped closer to him.

—

"This is bad," she said quietly.

—

Mike didn't respond.

—

Because this—

—

This was the real system.

—

Not disappearance.

—

Not fear.

—

Incentive.

—

"They're not just removing people," Mike said.

—

"They're shaping us."

—

No one argued.

—

Because they could already feel it happening.

—

Kwame looked at his hands.

Still empty.

—

"I had it," he said quietly.

—

No one replied.

—

Because they had seen it too.

—

And next time—

—

They wouldn't step back.

—

The clearing remained silent.

—

But something had changed.

—

Not in the system.

—

In them.

—

And somewhere—

—

Unseen—

—

The observers watched.

—

As the first seed of greed took root.
