Chapter 58 - The Exam

Hajin followed the others under the guild, where the corridor ran past any sensible foundation.

Reinforced doors broke both walls, and their inscriptions prickled across his skin whenever he drifted too near the sunken locks. Behind one door something scraped across stone, and half the applicants suddenly found the opposite wall absolutely fascinating to hug.

Juna sidled away from that door without letting her shoulder leave his, "Was that claws?"

"Or somebody filing a complaint," he jerked his chin at the figure leading them down, "and I bet those cost extra down here."

"I can hear you." Allen brushed his fingers along the next locking plate without bothering to turn around.

Hajin spread his hands while the nearest applicants choked on their laughter, "Then the acoustics deserve my compliments."

The corridor sloped down until even the distant noise of the main hall died somewhere behind them.

Allen stopped before a pair of gates and turned to face them.
