Hale looked down at Estella's petition notes. "The sentry's note states that you kept him out of the hallway for ten minutes."
"Twelve minutes, Madam," Harrow corrected evenly. "From five-thirty-eight to five-fifty. I logged the exact gap in the watch book before taking my rampart shift. At five-forty-eight, while I held the foot of the service stairs, a clerk in Senate grey stepped out of the envoy's room, pulled the door shut behind him, and walked down the service stairs."
"Did you see his face?" Hale asked.
"No, Madam. His hood was up against the corridor draft," Harrow replied. "I saw his right hand when he gripped the iron banister. He wore a heavy brass stamp ring on his right thumb."
Harrow sat down. The driver stood up next, shifting his weight and glaring sideways at the floor.
