Chapter 29 - 29. A Bitter Kind of Freedom

"Caelum," Elias called out loudly from his seat in the sprawling palace library, the sound echoing slightly in the vast space filled with towering shelves of ancient books.

Caelum, hearing the sudden urgency in his voice, came running immediately, his heart pounding as he feared something terrible had happened to Elias. "What is it? What happened?" he asked, his voice sharp with worry.

Elias shook his head, a wave of relief washing over him. "I couldn't find you anywhere and I thought you might have left the library," he admitted with a deep sigh. "Thank goodness you are still here," he said, holding out a rolled-up parchment. He handed Caelum a detailed report.

Caelum took the document with a profound sigh of relief, his earlier anxiety dissolving. He quickly scanned the contents of the report. "Brilliant!" he whispered, his eyes wide with a mixture of excitement and awe as he looked up from the report to meet Elias's gaze. "May I give you a hug?" he asked, a genuine smile lighting up his face.

Elias returned the smile warmly and immediately pulled Caelum into a tight embrace. "You never have to ask," he murmured softly into Caelum's hair.

A few minutes later, after they had reluctantly pulled apart, a faint shimmer of golden light enveloped them, and Elias instantly teleported them both directly into Alexander's private office, which was furnished with dark, polished wood and lined with maps and strategic documents.

"Son?" Alexander's voice was hopeful as he looked up from his desk. "Did you manage to find something?" he inquired, his expression eager.

Elias nodded, and Caelum swiftly passed the critical report from his hand to Alexander. "The potion I managed to create," Elias explained, his voice steady. "It is identical to the one I was forced to drink."

Alexander let out a long, heavy breath of relief, the tension draining from his shoulders. "How long will the antidote take for you to finish making?" he asked.

A confident, knowing smile spread across Elias's face.

"It's already simmering on the heat, isn't it?" Caelum guessed, his own smile mirroring Elias's pride.

Elias simply nodded. "You have always taught me to trust my instinct, Father, so when I felt with certainty that the composition of the potion I sent to Nathan for analysis was the same one I drank, I immediately began the process of brewing its antidote," he recounted. "It will be fully ready in precisely one hour."

Alexander and Matheas exchanged a fond, meaningful look and smiled widely. 'These two young men could not possibly resemble us any better than they already do,' they thought simultaneously, a shared sense of pride warming their chests.

Elias then teleported himself and Caelum out of the palace and to Emerald Manor, a beautifully constructed, peaceful residence set amidst lush green gardens. "Mother," he called out as soon as they materialized in the elegant foyer.

Isolde, his mother, rushed into the spacious lounge, her eyes sparkling with anticipation. "You found the antidote?" she asked, her voice high with excitement.

Elias nodded once more, his smile gentle. "It will be ready in another hour," he confirmed. "I will finally be free from Aurelius and his control," he said, a noticeable lightness in his tone.

Isolde embraced Elias tightly and then gently drew Caelum into their hug, who joined them with a quiet, joyful smile of his own. "Thank you, Caelum," she whispered sincerely against his shoulder.

Caelum quickly pulled back, feeling undeserving of the praise. "I didn't actually do anything," he insisted, shaking his head. "The entire potion and antidote were Elias's hard work."

"But he didn't have this much confidence in himself a year ago to attempt something this audacious," Isolde pointed out, her hand tenderly cupping Caelum's cheek. "You have changed him completely for the better. Thank you so much for that," she added, her face alight with a soft, grateful smile.

"So, what is the next step?" Caelum asked after Elias had teleported them back to the quiet familiarity of the palace library, where they had spent countless hours working together, after a brief but comforting conversation with Isolde.

"Now," Elias said with a determined grin spreading across his face, a spark of mischief in his eyes, "we go and knock some much-needed sense into my idiot brother's head."

"You have no intention of making this a smooth, civil conversation, do you?" Caelum asked, an amused, soft smile playing on his lips as he looked at Elias.

Elias shook his head vehemently. "Even if he was supposedly controlled, that idiot still deserves to suffer for hurting me the way he did," he stated with a huff, folding his arms tightly across his chest in a defiant gesture.

Caelum stepped closer to him and gently wrapped his arms around Elias, offering comfort. "You are absolutely right," he whispered, resting his head against Elias's chest.

Elias hugged Caelum back instantly and tenderly kissed the top of his head. 'Wait, isn't this the very first time he has initiated a hug with me?' he thought with a triumphant inner smile. 'I suppose I will have to be patient and settle for just hugs and platonic forehead kisses for a little while longer,' he mused to himself. 'But do not think for a second you are getting away from me, Caelum Valtheron.'

"I have something I want to give you," Caelum announced, pulling back slightly from the warm embrace.

"What could it be?" Elias asked, his eyes brightening with genuine excitement.

"A protective bracelet," Caelum explained, reaching into his trouser pocket. He pulled out a simple, yet elegant silver chain with a small, intricate rune etched into its center, and carefully fastened it around Elias's wrist.

"What exactly does it do?" Elias asked, turning his wrist to admire the craftsmanship of the bracelet.

"It is designed to sense any impending danger and automatically activates a holy barrier for defense," Caelum replied.

"Are you planning on going somewhere far away, Caelum?" Elias asked, his hands gripping Caelum's shoulders much harder than necessary, a sudden, cold fear gripping his heart.

Caelum shook his head, unaffected by Elias's crushing grip, his expression gentle. "I created this specifically for those times when I have to undergo intense training with my great grand uncle and you are left vulnerable or defenseless," he reassured him with a soft smile.

"But..." Elias started, slowly loosening his grip on Caelum's shoulders. "But didn't he specifically say you would only begin your true training after you graduate from the academy?" he asked, confused.

Caelum nodded. "He did say that," he confirmed with a reassuring smile. He took a small step closer to Elias, confidently placing his arms on Elias's hips. "This particular bracelet is not yet powerful enough to effectively fend off an intermediate level attack," he explained. "However, from my observations and experimentation, I have found that it strongly resonates with my specific magical strength."

Elias pulled Caelum back into a fierce, relieved hug. "You should have told me that much sooner," he whispered urgently into Caelum's ear, a noticeable tremor in his voice. "I honestly thought for a horrifying moment that you were preparing to leave me."

"I made you a promise that I will never leave you," Caelum gently reminded him, holding him just as tightly. Even the mere thought of being separated from Elias sent a deep, unnerving chill down his spine.

"And what exactly did you mean about the bracelet resonating with your magic?" Elias asked, curiosity replacing the fear.

"The longer I remain in close proximity to the bracelet, the more it slowly accumulates and stores the ambient magic I emit. It then stores this energy within the rune and uses it as a power source to both defend you and detect danger when I am not right beside you," Caelum detailed.

"So, it essentially charges from your magic and acts to keep me safe when you are not physically around?" Elias summarized, looking down at the silver band on his wrist with a newfound appreciation.

"Precisely," Caelum confirmed. "And I only intend for you to wear this," he said with a playful huff. "So please, do not even think about giving it to anyone else."

"Not even to my father?" Elias asked, a knowing, amused smile playing on his lips.

"No," Caelum said firmly. "His Majesty already has Matheas constantly by his side for protection," he reasoned.

Elias laughed heartily. "I think the antidote must be ready in just a few minutes now," he said, turning his attention back to the pressing matter. "Shall we walk down to the laboratory?" he suggested.

Caelum nodded, instinctively preparing himself for Elias to grab his arm and teleport them instantly, as he usually did.

"We are going to walk this time," Elias announced with a genuine smile, a peaceful sentiment in his voice.

Caelum smiled back, feeling a sense of calm as he walked side-by-side with Elias toward the quiet, sterile laboratory.

Alexander and Matheas were already waiting patiently in the lab when they arrived.

"I believe it is finally ready," Alexander stated, looking intently at the potion which had cooled to a manageable temperature in its vial.

Elias looked at the swirling liquid and nodded decisively. "It is," he confirmed with a sense of immense satisfaction.

Caelum positioned himself directly behind Elias, ready to catch him instantly, just in case the potent potion caused him to faint, as powerful magical remedies sometimes did.

Elias took a deep, steadying breath and quickly gulped down the entire potion. "That tastes just as nasty as the original one I was forced to consume," he grumbled immediately, before his eyes rolled back and he instantly lost consciousness, slumping backward.

"I will let you both know the moment he wakes up," Caelum said calmly, gently lifting Elias's limp body into his arms. He looked from Matheas to Alexander, his expression serious.

Alexander laid a reassuring hand on Caelum and Matheas, and with a familiar flash of light, teleported all three of them into Elias's private room at Emerald Manor. He then immediately teleported back to the palace with Matheas to await news.

"Did he drink the antidote?" Isolde asked softly, entering the tranquil room a moment later.

Caelum simply nodded, his arms still supporting Elias.

"I will leave the two of you alone then," she whispered, giving them a meaningful, understanding look. She quietly walked out of Elias's room, but not before brushing a strand of dark hair from Elias's forehead and placing a soft, loving kiss there.
