CHAPTER — MEXICO: ONE VERY LONG DAY
1:00 A.M.
Mexico was still awake.
Jay stepped out of the SUV wearing loose black cargo pants, a plain dark T-shirt, sneakers, and a pair of sunglasses.
Not because she was trying to look intimidating.
Not because she wanted attention.
She simply liked sunglasses.
Coco stepped out behind her, carrying two bags.
Lisa followed, stretching after the long flight.
Coco looked at Jay.
"It's one in the morning."
Jay nodded.
"Yes."
"You're wearing sunglasses."
"Yes."
"Inside a building."
"Yes."
Coco stared at her.
Jay stared back.
Lisa sighed.
"Don't question it, Coco. We've learned this lesson before."
Jay adjusted her sunglasses.
"I wear what I want."
Coco grinned.
"That's why you're Jay."
Jay smiled slightly.
"Exactly."
They walked into the private hotel.
The first thing Jay noticed wasn't the enormous lobby.
It wasn't the security.
It wasn't even the meeting room waiting upstairs.
It was the smell coming from the restaurant.
Jay stopped.
Coco nearly walked into her.
"What?"
Jay pointed.
"Food."
Lisa laughed.
"We have ten meetings."
Jay looked at her.
"And?"
"It's one in the morning."
"And?"
Coco immediately understood.
"She's going to eat."
Jay nodded.
"Correct."
---
1:20 A.M. — MEXICAN FOOD
They sat down at a private table.
The restaurant brought out tacos al pastor, tamales, pozole, chiles en nogada, mole, elote and churros.
Jay stared at the table.
"This is excessive."
Coco smiled.
"You say that like you're going to stop eating."
"I didn't say that."
Lisa laughed.
Jay tried the tacos first.
She took one bite.
Silence.
Coco watched her expression.
"Well?"
Jay slowly put the taco down.
"Who invented this?"
The waiter explained.
Jay nodded seriously.
"I respect them."
Coco laughed.
She tried pozole next.
Then tamales.
Then elote.
Then churros.
Lisa eventually pushed a plate toward her.
"You're going to try everything, aren't you?"
Jay looked offended.
"Obviously."
Coco leaned back.
"We're never making it to the first meeting."
Jay picked up another taco.
"That's a tomorrow problem."
---
2:00 A.M. — MEETING ONE
CUSTOM ROBOTICS
The mood changed the moment they entered the conference room.
Jay put her sunglasses on the table.
The engineers began their presentation.
The first project was a customizable robotic assistant.
But it wasn't a simple cleaning robot.
The system was designed to learn the user's routines while keeping control firmly with the owner.
It could organize rooms, carry objects, monitor household systems, prepare simple meals using approved settings, assist elderly people, help with accessibility needs, manage reminders, and perform repetitive household tasks.
Jay listened without interrupting.
Then she asked:
"How does it respond when the owner's routine changes?"
The engineers explained that the system could adapt.
Jay shook her head.
"Adapt isn't enough. It needs a manual override. The owner should always be able to stop or change its behavior."
The room went quiet.
She continued.
"Make the robot customizable without making it unpredictable."
One engineer nodded.
"And privacy?"
Jay looked directly at him.
"No unnecessary recording. No selling household data. No hidden monitoring."
Lisa smiled.
Coco whispered,
"She came prepared."
Jay heard him.
"I always come prepared."
---
3:00 A.M. — MEETING TWO
CULINA
The second meeting introduced something completely new.
An AI cooking system called CULINA.
It wasn't just a recipe generator.
CULINA could scan available ingredients, identify what needed to be used first, account for allergies and dietary restrictions, adjust recipes based on serving size, explain cooking steps visually, monitor connected kitchen equipment, and suggest substitutions when an ingredient was missing.
The engineers demonstrated it with six random ingredients.
The system created three possible meals.
Jay leaned forward.
"Can it recognize when someone is doing something incorrectly?"
"Yes."
"Can it explain why?"
"Yes."
"Can it adjust for beginners?"
"Yes."
Jay nodded.
"Good."
Coco raised his hand.
"Can it recognize when someone is too lazy to cook?"
The engineer hesitated.
Jay answered.
"That's called looking in a mirror."
Lisa nearly choked laughing.
Coco pointed at Jay.
"That was unnecessary."
"You asked."
---
4:15 A.M. — MEETING THREE
AEGIS ENGINEERING
The third meeting was much more serious.
Jay entered a secured engineering laboratory.
Three emergency-response prototypes were waiting.
The first, Aegis One, was designed for disaster-response teams. It could detect dangerous environmental conditions and automatically send emergency information to a command center.
The second, Aegis Two, was wearable technology combining navigation, environmental sensors, emergency communication and location tracking.
The third, Aegis Three, was designed for collapsed buildings.
It could map unstable structures, identify possible survivors and transmit information to rescue teams.
Jay studied all three.
"These aren't toys."
The engineers nodded.
"I want independent safety testing," Jay said. "No shortcuts."
One engineer asked, "Even if it delays the launch?"
Jay didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
Lisa looked at her.
Jay's voice stayed calm.
"If someone is trusting this technology with their life, we don't get to rush because we're impatient."
The room became completely silent.
Coco stopped joking.
"That's fair."
---
5:30 A.M. — MEETING FOUR
NOVA
The fourth meeting was about a new vehicle.
Not a sports car.
Not a luxury car.
A practical advanced vehicle designed around safety and usefulness.
The prototype had adaptive suspension, emergency obstacle detection, self-diagnostic systems, intelligent navigation, emergency power reserves, adjustable storage and a system that could warn the driver about mechanical problems before they became dangerous.
Jay walked around it.
"What happens if the primary electrical system fails?"
The engineer explained the backup system.
"And if that fails?"
"Independent emergency controls."
Jay nodded.
"Good."
Coco opened the trunk.
"There is so much storage."
Lisa looked inside.
"You're thinking about snacks."
"I am thinking about emergency supplies."
Jay looked at him.
"You're thinking about snacks."
Coco smiled.
"…Also snacks."
---
6:30 A.M. — MEETING FIVE
MEDICAL RESEARCH
The fifth meeting was the most confidential.
Five fictional emergency-medical research compounds were presented:
VANTA-1 — designed as experimental research for emergency stabilization.
OBSIDIAN-2 — an experimental infection-response compound.
PHANTOM-3 — an experimental pain-management research compound.
NOVA-4 — an experimental antidote platform.
RAVEN-5 — an experimental toxin-neutralization research compound.
The meeting wasn't about making them dangerous.
It was about making them safe enough to study responsibly.
Jay read every report.
"What are the failure conditions?"
The scientists explained.
"What happens if the treatment doesn't work?"
They answered.
"What prevents misuse?"
Another detailed explanation followed.
Jay finally closed the folder.
"Then keep the research controlled."
Lisa nodded.
Jay wasn't joking anymore.
"Medicine isn't something you make dramatic just because the name sounds cool."
Coco nodded.
"Agreed."
---
7:30 A.M. — MEETING SIX
RESCUE ROBOTICS
The sixth meeting focused on industrial rescue machines.
The goal was simple:
Put machines into environments too dangerous for humans.
Fire zones.
Collapsed buildings.
Flooded areas.
Industrial accidents.
The demonstration robot entered a simulated disaster zone.
It mapped the area.
Detected obstacles.
Located a dummy victim.
Sent the coordinates back.
Then returned.
Jay watched the entire demonstration.
"Make it smaller."
The engineers looked surprised.
"Smaller?"
"Emergency workers can't always bring a giant machine through narrow spaces."
They immediately began taking notes.
Jay pointed toward the screen.
"And improve its communication range."
"Understood."
"Then test it again."
---
8:30 A.M. — MEETING SEVEN
CULINA NETWORK
The seventh meeting expanded CULINA into an entire smart-kitchen system.
It could monitor ingredients, identify food nearing expiration, reduce waste, suggest meals based on available supplies and coordinate with compatible appliances.
Jay wanted one additional feature.
"Emergency cooking mode."
The engineers looked confused.
"If someone has only a few ingredients," Jay explained, "the system should prioritize simple meals that can actually be made with them."
Lisa nodded.
"That would be genuinely useful."
Coco raised his hand.
"And pizza mode?"
Jay stared at him.
"Coco."
"What?"
"You've asked this three times."
"Because I believe in persistence."
Lisa laughed.
Jay shook her head.
"Fine. Pizza mode."
Coco celebrated like he'd won a championship.
---
9:30 A.M. — MEETING EIGHT
SMART TRANSPORTATION
The eighth meeting involved communication between vehicles and road infrastructure.
Traffic signals.
Emergency vehicles.
Road sensors.
Navigation systems.
The purpose was to reduce accidents and improve emergency response.
Jay asked about privacy.
Then cybersecurity.
Then system failure.
Then manual control.
She didn't approve the project until every concern had been addressed.
Finally, she signed the document.
"Proceed to controlled testing."
Coco leaned toward Lisa.
"She interrogated that project for forty minutes."
Lisa whispered,
"And somehow she's still awake."
Jay looked over.
"I can hear you."
They both went silent.
---
10:30 A.M. — MEETING NINE
MODULAR DISASTER BUILDINGS
The ninth meeting focused on structures that could be rapidly assembled after disasters.
Emergency clinics.
Temporary classrooms.
Shelters.
Storage facilities.
Jay studied the designs.
"How long to assemble?"
The engineer gave the estimate.
"Too long."
He blinked.
"What?"
Jay pointed at the design.
"Redesign the connection system."
The team immediately began discussing alternatives.
Lisa smiled.
"This is why you don't give Jay a deadline."
Jay looked at her.
"Exactly."
Coco nodded solemnly.
"Deadlines fear her."
Jay laughed.
"Finally, someone understands."
---
11:30 A.M. — MEETING TEN
PROJECT AURORA
The final meeting connected everything.
Robotics.
CULINA.
Emergency technology.
Smart transportation.
Medical research.
Disaster engineering.
All of it came together under one project:
PROJECT AURORA.
Jay sat silently as the presentation ended.
She didn't immediately approve it.
She asked one final question.
"What happens if the system fails?"
The room went quiet.
The lead engineer answered.
"Every critical function has a manual fallback."
Jay nodded.
"Then proceed."
The team finally relaxed.
Coco leaned back.
"Ten meetings."
Lisa checked the time.
"It's almost noon."
Jay looked at them.
"Lunch?"
Coco immediately stood.
"YES."
---
12:15 P.M. — FIGHT ONE
They barely reached the parking area before the atmosphere changed.
A group approached.
Jay noticed immediately.
"Stay behind me."
Coco and Lisa moved closer.
The confrontation escalated quickly.
Jay avoided the first attack and pushed the attacker away.
Lisa helped block another person from reaching Coco.
Coco moved quickly, keeping himself and Lisa out of danger.
Within minutes, the group backed away.
Jay looked at her friends.
"Everyone okay?"
Lisa nodded.
Coco gave a thumbs-up.
"Completely fine."
Jay looked at him.
"You're bleeding."
Coco looked down.
"…Oh."
Lisa sighed.
"You said completely fine."
"I forgot the bleeding part."
Jay laughed despite herself.
---
12:45 P.M. — FIGHT TWO
They were almost back inside when another confrontation started.
This time Jay didn't even sigh.
She simply looked at Coco.
"Seriously?"
Coco shrugged.
"Apparently Mexico wants us to stay."
Lisa whispered,
"Mexico has terrible hospitality."
Jay laughed.
The situation ended quickly after security arrived.
Jay checked both of her friends again.
Nobody was seriously hurt.
"Now," she said, "we're eating."
Coco nodded.
"Finally."
---
1:15 P.M. — LUNCH
They returned to the restaurant.
Jay ordered more tacos.
Coco stared at her.
"You just had breakfast."
Jay shrugged.
"It's lunch now."
Lisa laughed.
"Technically she's right."
Coco pointed at Jay.
"You've eaten enough Mexican food for three people."
Jay calmly took another bite.
"I contain multitudes."
Coco burst out laughing.
Lisa nearly dropped her drink.
Jay looked between them.
"What?"
"You can't just say things like that with a straight face," Coco said.
Jay smiled.
"I can."
---
2:00 P.M. — QUIET
Later, the three sat on the hotel balcony.
No meetings.
No presentations.
No engineers.
No security briefings.
Just Mexico stretching out below them.
Jay had taken off her sunglasses.
Coco leaned back in his chair.
"Today was insane."
Lisa nodded.
"Ten meetings. Two fights. And approximately one hundred tacos."
Jay corrected her.
"Not one hundred."
Coco looked at her.
"Do you know the number?"
Jay paused.
"…No."
Lisa laughed.
Jay smiled.
For all the businesses, technology and dangerous situations, this was the part she actually liked.
Sitting with people she trusted.
No pretending.
No dressing up.
No trying to impress anyone.
Just Jay.
Coco looked over.
"Tomorrow?"
Jay sighed.
"More work."
Coco groaned.
Lisa laughed.
Jay leaned back.
Then she smiled.
"But we'll eat first."
Coco raised his hand.
"Now that's leadership."
Jay laughed.
"Exactly."
They finally returned to their hotel, Casa Aurelia, a luxurious five-star hotel overlooking the glowing Mexico City skyline. The lobby was enormous, with marble floors, warm golden lights, and a huge fountain in the center.
They went straight to the hotel's private restaurant.
Dinner was already waiting—tacos, enchiladas, pozole, grilled vegetables, guacamole, rice, and, of course, churros.
Coco looked at the table.
"Okay. Mexico has officially forgiven me."
Lisa laughed.
Jay quietly took a churro.
Coco reached for one of hers.
Jay immediately moved the plate away.
"Don't."
"I was just looking."
"You were reaching."
"I was reaching spiritually."
Lisa burst out laughing.
Jay shook her head and gave him one anyway.
After dinner, they went upstairs to their rooms. The rooms were huge, with enormous beds, soft lighting, and balconies overlooking the city.
Jay changed into comfortable clothes, placed her sunglasses on the bedside table, and collapsed onto her bed.
"I'm never moving again."
Coco called from the next room, "Goodnight, Jay!"
"Goodnight, Coco."
Lisa called, "Goodnight!"
"Goodnight."
Within minutes, the three were asleep, completely exhausted after another ridiculously chaotic day in Mexico.
