Chapter 8 - free money

Hey guys, I'm so sorry for not uploading chapters faster. I know how frustrating it is to wait a month or even longer.

About two months ago, I was hit by a car. Luckily, I think I'm okay? When the car hit me, I went flying and hit my head twice, and my arm was in really bad shape, but I never lost consciousness.

I should have gone to the hospital, but I couldn't because of a lack of money. But don't worry, with a little help, someone was able to reset my arm...

Thank you for listening, and please enjoy the chapter!

Sitting on the same worn-out mattress where he was trying to sleep, he kept waiting. One minute after another. To keep himself entertained, he bounced a small red ball against the wall; the echo of the rubber bouncing was the only sound breaking the silence.

He looked at his wrist. He wore a nearly shattered watch, but one that still kept precise time: 05:49 p.m.

Nothing. Absolutely nothing was happening. Not a single crime in these parts.

He reached into the backpack beside him and pulled out an old blanket to wrap around himself and fend off the cold.

"My God, this idea is completely stupid..." he muttered under his breath, catching the ball mid-air before throwing it again. "Should I just call it quits, or hold out a little longer?"

He let out a long sigh and turned his head toward the alley's exit, from where the bank's facade was visible.

"Well... sooner or later, tomorrow or in a year, some idiot will come to steal those stupid dollars."

He caught the ball firmly, settled onto the ugly mattress, and slowly let his eyelids close.

06:59 p.m.

. . .

BOOOOM!

A deafening explosion blew open the bank's main entrance, sending shards of the massive glass and metal door flying. Almost instantly, two black vans sped up the steps, slamming on the brakes just feet away from the destroyed entrance.

Out of the smoke and dust emerged several figures dressed in black, outfitted in tactical assault gear. Each carried massive bags stuffed with money over their shoulders.

"Hurry, hurry! We're running out of time before the police get here... or worse, some damn hero!" shouted one of the thieves, stationed at the entrance while nervously checking his watch.

The criminals moved in and out in coordinated chaos. The man with the watch grabbed one of the bag-carrying thieves tightly by the shoulder.

"Hey, new guy! Move it, grab a weapon, and destroy all the cameras before the power comes back on!"

"Y-yes, sir!" the rookie stammered, his voice trembling with nerves.

He ran clumsily toward the open-doored van and grabbed one of the state-of-the-art rifles.

With Enkidu...

"I can't believe it... I seriously can't believe it! This is actually happening!"

From the edge of the alley, Enkidu peeked out with only half his face showing. His eyes dilated completely, and his pupils sparkled with an almost comical gleam as he took in the chaos.

"Stupid villains... No, simple low-life thieves are robbing that bank!"

The violent blast from a moment ago had made him leap off the mattress in a single bound. Sleep vanished in the blink of an eye, and he had rushed to take cover behind the brick wall to figure out what the hell was going on.

Unable to contain his excitement, he started hopping like a child on the spot, shaking his fists in the air with a giant smile plastered across his face. Spinning quickly on his heels, he darted toward his things.

"This is amazing, this is amazing!" he hummed at the top of his lungs while his hands moved like a blur, packing everything at ridiculous speed. "Luck is finally on my side!"

He pressed both fists to his chest, gazing up at the sky with a melodramatic, hope-filled expression.

"Yes! If I can just snatch a single bag from them... my miserable life as a vagrant will be over forever!"

He yanked his backpack shut and slung it over his shoulder with a decisive motion.

"I'll be able to buy a tiny house... or maybe a small farm! Anything, as long as I'm far away from this damn city..."

In the night sky of Metropolis, the wind gently stirred her red cape, making it flutter like a flag. Supergirl hovered several meters above the ground, suspended in mid-air with her arms crossed firmly over the shield on her chest.

She kept her eyes locked on the street, her brow furrowed in a look of absolute severity.

"Again?" she muttered, annoyed, bringing her fingers to her temples as she clenched her teeth. "That's four banks robbed this week... and all by different groups of thieves."

An aura of exhaustion surrounded her figure. She descended slowly through the air, landing without making a sound. All she wanted right then was to fly straight to her apartment, collapse on the couch, and devour a whole tub of ice cream while binge-watching her favorite soap operas.

"I'll make this quick and head home..." the blonde thought with a resigned sigh.

Below, wrapped in smoke and haste, the thieves were so busy loading the loot that they didn't even notice the shadow cast over them.

Meanwhile, hidden behind a dumpster, Enkidu's eyes were wide open, shining like two bright stars. His mouth hung half-open, and an imaginary drop of sweat rolled down his forehead before a massive fanboy smile spread across his face.

He couldn't believe it! It was his favorite comic book heroine in the flesh!

He had to cover his mouth with both hands to stifle a squeal of excitement. Taking little hops from a squatting position, he pressed himself closer to the brick wall. He had to hold his breath, stay hidden, and wait for the perfect moment...

With Supergirl...

"Ahem, ahem..." the blonde fake-coughed, stepping through and appearing right between the black vans.

All the thieves froze instantly. Even the guy shouting orders stood petrified, staring along with his men at the space between the vehicles.

There, standing completely at ease, was Supergirl.

"Hey, guys. Look, I'm going to go a bit hard on you so I can wrap this up fast, because honestly... I'm exhausted. So I apologize in advance," she said in an almost apologetic tone.

A heavy silence fell over the area for thirty long seconds. The criminals didn't know whether to run for it or process what they were seeing.

Suddenly, the thief holding the experimental rifle pulled the trigger. A massive, glowing blue beam shot out toward her.

Supergirl simply crossed her arms in an "X" shape against the impact.

The blast served as a flare. The rest reacted in a stampede: some charged clumsily at the heroine to distract her, while the rest ran toward the back of the vans to arm themselves to the teeth.

The leader, without wasting a second, grabbed one of the most powerful weapons from the shipment.

Meanwhile, from a distance...

Safe in the alley, the green-haired youth watched the scene with absolute serenity. Enkidu was just patiently waiting for the right moment... and above all, for that bag full of money.

The fight was about to end.

A pair of energy beams sliced through the smoke and hit Supergirl head-on, blowing up the side of the van in a shower of sparks and metal. The blonde barely took a step back, planting her feet firmly on the asphalt, which cracked under her boots. However, the shockwave lifted the vehicle into the air, causing it to flip several times before crashing just a few meters from Enkidu.

Through the smoke and out of the corner of her eye, she caught the roar of the second van's engine swerving desperately to escape.

She wasn't going to let them.

Keeping her eyes on the chaos, the blonde noticed out of the corner of her eye how the second van slammed on the gas, burning rubber to make its getaway.

Breaking the sound barrier with a violent sonic boom, she flew low to the ground and planted herself right in front of the two fugitives. The gust of wind almost brought the vehicle to a dead stop. Before the men could react or process the threat, the Kryptonian snatched their rifles with surgical precision and bent them like paper, shattering them with a loud metallic crunch.

"All set..." she thought with satisfaction after destroying the weaponry. She looked at the two criminals and offered them a confident smile. Just as they tried to move, she took a deep breath and released a blast of freeze breath. The icy gust hit the whole group dead-on, freezing them instantly to the ground in blocks of solid ice.

"Get some rest, boys..." she whispered, watching as they froze completely motionless.

Nobody could move; everyone was staring up at the night sky.
