Chapter 19 - Still didn't get who you married, moglie.

Adriana's POV

The room stayed entirely silent after his last word.

"...dies."

Nobody moved. No one in the room even dared to draw a full breath. The heavy, suffocating weight of his decree pressed down on everyone present, forcing even the most hardened soldiers standing near the walls to lower their eyes in absolute submission.

When Alessio looked calm like this—cold, still, and completely unbothered—it meant someone was about to disappear from the face of the world. Forever.

A sudden tremor ran straight down my spine. I had witnessed the terrifying depths of his anger before. But this?

This time, the quiet told a whole different, far more catastrophic story. His anger wasn't an explosive outburst; it was a lethal combination of raw rage and absolute silence.

And that made it infinitely worse.

Alessio placed the firearm back onto the dark wood table, his face remaining a mask of deadly calm. He turned his head slowly, his gaze locking onto me.

His eyes darkened into bottomless pools of black the instant he took in the state of my face and neck, tracking the fresh injuries blooming against my skin.

"You are bleeding," he murmured.

I reached up automatically, my fingers lightly touching the small, sharp cut sitting near the column of my neck. It was small. A minor scratch from the chaos of the night. I hadn't even noticed this particular one before his eyes zeroed in on it.

"Umm..."

The exact fraction of a second Alessio saw the dried blood on my skin, something volatile and incredibly dangerous flashed deep within his eyes.

One of the guards standing by the doorway swallowed nervously, the sound loud in the heavy quiet. "The doctor is waiting downstairs, boss—"

"Out. Now."

Alessio didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. The low, gravelly vibration of the command carried an undeniable finality.

The guard froze in sheer terror before turning on his heel. Within a second, every man in the room rushed out immediately, desperate to escape the atmospheric pressure building between us.

In the span of a single breath, the massive room was completely emptied.

Now it was only him and I. No one spoke a word, the silence filling the space heavily, pressing against my ribs like a physical weight.

I broke the connection first, looking away toward the floorboards. "I-I'm fine."

"No," Alessio said coldly, his voice slicing through the quiet. "You are not."

The heavy, deliberate click of his boots echoed slowly against the floor as he closed the distance between us.

One.

Two.

Three.

He stopped, standing directly in front of me. Too close. His massive frame completely dominated my space, close enough for the heavy scent of woodsmoke, bitter whiskey, and the faint, metallic aroma of fresh blood on his clothes to envelope me entirely.

My breath caught hard in my throat.

His large hand came up slowly, his fingers lifting my chin with a breathless, painstaking gentleness. It was entirely too gentle for a man who had just threatened a cold-blooded execution seconds prior.

"Did he touch you?" he asked.

My heart skipped a violent beat. The question wasn't delivered with a shout, but it carried a lethal, unyielding promise underneath the surface.

I hesitated, the pressure of his thumb holding my jaw in place. "Umm... he..."

That tiny fraction of a hesitation completely destroyed whatever fragile control he had left.

Alessio suddenly slammed his other hand down, his fingers gripping the wooden armrest beside me with a brutal force. The thick wood cracked loudly under the sudden pressure, fracturing under his palm.

"Did he fucking touch you?" he growled.

The room felt entirely colder, the firelight casting long, harsh shadows across his features.

"He tried to," I whispered quickly, the truth forced out by the sheer panic bleeding through his dominance. "But nothing happened. I handled it."

His jaw clenched hard, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. He leaned closer, his dark eyes dilated as he hovered over me until his forehead nearly brushed against mine. His heat was suffocating.

"You should have called me," he muttered, his voice sounding completely rough, scraped raw by an emotion he couldn't mask.It wasn't angry anymore. It was worse.

It was hurt.

And somehow, the raw vulnerability in that tone affected me far deeper than the display of his terrifying rage ever could.

"I didn't want to create any problems for you," I replied, my voice softening as I looked up into the darkness of his gaze. "You are already seriously hurt, Alessio. Your stitches—"

"Principessa," he murmured softly, interrupting me as his thumb brushed over the cut on my skin. "People die for creating problems for me. You are the only person alive allowed to disrupt my world."

God, this nickname. Why did it always manage to twist something deep inside my chest? Why did his voice saying it affect me so profoundly? Before I could form a coherent thought, Alessio suddenly moved, removing his heavy tailored coat in a fluid motion and wrapping it securely around my shoulders.

The oversized, dark fabric swallowed me whole, instantly trapping me inside his warmth.

Protective. Infused with the familiar, intoxicating scent of gasoline, rain, and raw danger. It was undeniably his.

That was exactly how the weight of the fabric felt against my bare skin. The heavy coat carried his explicit claim over me, marking me in front of the empty room.

I tried to ignore the fierce heat rising rapidly into my cheeks, tightening my grip on the lapels. "You don't have to treat me like I am too meek," I muttered, refusing to let him see how much he was shaking my foundations.

Alessio stared down at me for a long, unblinking moment. Then, the tension in his shoulders fractured, and he chuckled quietly. It was a low, dark sound that vibrated straight through the floorboards.

"Still didn't get who you married, moglie," he murmured, the Italian word for wife rolling off his tongue like a beautiful threat.

Something about the quiet certainty in his tone made a sudden unease crawl up the length of my spine. "What do you mean by that?"

He didn't answer with words. Instead, he simply reached into the pocket of his trousers, pulled out his phone, and threw it casually onto the wooden table beside me.

A video clip was already playing on the screen.

I frowned, leaning forward to inspect the glowing display. Then, my entire body froze completely inside his coat.

It was high-definition security footage from tonight. Specifically, the exact moment that man had cornered me near the dark hallway of the casino. The exact moment his hand had reached out and violently grabbed my wrist.

The camera angle on the glowing screen shifted abruptly.

The scene transitioned from the casino corridor to a rain-slicked rooftop. In the grainy surveillance feed, dark crimson blood mixed with the pooling rainwater on the concrete. My stomach dropped completely. Tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of the frame was the exact same man who had dared to wrap his hand around my wrist. He was barely conscious, his head hanging low.

Alessio stood directly in front of him on the screen. Expressionless. Holding a weapon.

"No—"

The protest fell from my lips as I looked up at him instantly, trying to find a fracture in his armor.

But the real-life Alessio was watching the video playback without a single shred of human emotion. His eyes slowly came up to lock onto mine. In a swift, unyielding movement, his large arm wrapped securely around my waist, pulling my body forcefully against his bare chest until there was no space left between us.

"Anyone who dares to touch my wife dies," he murmured into my hair.

On the screen, a flash of fire left the barrel. A single gunshot echoed through the speakers.

The video clip ended, cutting to a pitch-black screen. My blood turned entirely to ice. "You killed him..."

"He touched what's mine."

The low vibration of those four words hit my chest with a force far more devastating than the recorded gunshot.

Mine.

He hadn't said wife. He had chosen the word mine.

An absolute declaration of raw, unchecked ownership. Something highly dangerous and dark twisted violently inside my chest. Fear clashed with a sickening wave of confusion—and something far more terrifying that I actively refused to name.

"You're insane," I whispered against his skin.

Alessio's obsidian eyes locked onto mine, dilated and bottomless. He leaned down, his mouth crushing into mine in a deep, bruising kiss that served as a physical reminder of exactly who I belonged to.

"Maybe," he whispered quietly, his lips lingering against mine before he pulled back just far enough to look at me. "But remember this carefully, Adriana."

His calloused thumb brushed over the raw cut on my neck, his touch agonizingly soft. "If the world burns to ash tomorrow..."

His gaze darkened into pure murder.

"I will still burn it slower for the person who hurts you."

The oxygen completely disappeared from my lungs. This man—this terrifying, ruthlessly violent monster—meant every single syllable.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the office burst open with a loud crack. A soldier entered hurriedly, his face completely pale. "Boss—"

Alessio's expression instantly hardened into stone, the protective vulnerability vanishing as he shielded me behind his massive frame.

"What."

The guard looked profoundly nervous, his eyes darting toward me. "L"There's a serious problem, sir."

"What problem?"

The guard swallowed hard, his knuckles white. "The crew who attacked the safehouse... they left a message." His voice shook. "...they left it in blood."

Alessio's eyes turned deadly. "What message?"

The soldier hesitated for one fatal second before finally forcing the words out into the quiet room. "They said... they know who she really is."

Alessio's chest caught, a microscopic tell that the trap had snapped shut. "Okay. Go out for now."

The second the door clicked shut, Alessio suddenly reached for me again, his hands locking around my waist to yank me back against his chest before I could take a single step away.

"Look at me," he commanded, his voice quiet yet full of absolute gravity.

I tried resisting, pushing my hands against his shoulders, but the effort failed instantly against his iron strength.

His long fingers brushed against my cheekbone slowly, his dark eyes scanning every inch of my face deeply, as if trying to memorize every hidden fear buried inside my soul.

"You're shaking," he noted.

"I'm fine."

"Liar." The word came out softer than I expected—dangerously, terrifyingly soft. I hated the way my pulse aggressively spiked in response to that tone. I hated how this man could stand in the epicenter of absolute bloodshed and chaos, yet still notice the smallest tremble in my hands.

Alessio lowered his forehead briefly against mine, his heat enveloping me. "You think you can just keep your secrets in that beautiful little mind of yours and get away from this, tesoro?"

My breath caught hard. "You don't understand what's coming for us, Alessio."

His jaw tightened slightly before he answered, his voice dropping into a register of pure, unadulterated possession. "Then let it come, moglie."

The sheer possessiveness in his delivery sent a violent wave of warmth rushing through my chest, despite the lethal terror surrounding our borders.

Behind us, leaning against the doorframe, Zia Maria was standing silently. She was watching the two of us, a dark amusement written across her sharp features as she swirled a glass of vintage red wine in her hand.

"God help this city," she muttered coldly, taking a slow sip. "The two of you are going to become everyone's worst nightmare."
