Chapter 68 - The Name That Should Not Exist (Part - II)

"Tez..."

The voice came again.

Soft.

Warm.

Familiar.

The voice of the woman he had searched for in dreams for years.

His mother.

Tez could not move.

The woman stood at the bottom of the staircase.

Her face was exactly as he remembered it.

Her long hair fell over her shoulders.

Her eyes carried the same kindness.

The same sadness.

The same small smile that had once made Tez feel safe even when the whole world seemed frightening.

For a moment, everything else disappeared.

The dying city.

The broken Heart.

The Shadow.

The Guardians.

Even Vaidehi.

There was only his mother.

"Ma..."

The word escaped his lips like a child's cry.

The woman smiled.

"Come to me, Tez."

He took one step.

Arvind grabbed his shoulder.

"No."

Tez turned angrily.

"Let me go."

"That is not your mother."

Tez stared at him.

"You don't know that."

"I know."

"How?"

Arvind's voice became low.

"Because I watched your mother die."

The words struck Tez like a blade.

He turned back.

The woman was still smiling.

But something had changed.

Her eyes.

They were no longer warm.

They were empty.

Not cruel.

Not angry.

Just empty.

Like two deep holes in a face.

Tez stepped backward.

The woman's smile became wider.

"You always were difficult to fool."

Her voice was no longer his mother's.

It was the voice of the Shadow.

Vaidehi moved beside Tez.

"I knew it."

The Shadow tilted its head.

"Did you?"

Vaidehi's pendant began to glow.

The Shadow looked at it.

"You remember more than you should."

Vaidehi's hand closed around the pendant.

"I remember enough."

The Shadow laughed softly.

"No."

The darkness around the false mother began to spread.

"You remember what I allowed you to remember."

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

She looked frightened.

Not of the Shadow.

Of what it might reveal.

Tez understood.

There were still pieces missing.

Pieces from that night.

Pieces from before his life in Suryanagari.

Pieces connected to his death.

And his return.

He turned toward the Shadow.

"Show me."

Arvind immediately stepped forward.

"Tez, don't."

"I need to know."

"You don't know what remembering will do."

Tez looked at him.

"For years you told me forgetting would keep me safe."

His voice was calm now.

"But forgetting only made me live inside a lie."

Arvind said nothing.

Tez took another step.

"I choose the truth."

The Shadow smiled.

"Then remember."

---

The chamber disappeared.

Tez was standing in a forest.

Not the forest around Kaalvan.

A smaller forest.

A younger forest.

Sunlight passed through green leaves.

Birds were singing.

The smell of wet earth filled the air.

Tez looked down at himself.

He was a child.

Four years old.

His small hands were covered in dust.

Across from him stood Vaidehi.

She was also a child.

She was holding a flower.

And beside them stood the third child.

All three were laughing.

Tez felt his heart break.

He remembered.

Not everything.

But enough.

They had played here.

They had run through the trees.

They had climbed the old stone steps.

They had hidden from their mothers.

They had made promises.

Simple promises.

Childhood promises.

Promises that seemed meaningless at the time.

Never leave.

Never forget.

Always come back.

Then the memory changed.

The sky became dark.

The forest went silent.

Young Tez was lying on the ground.

Vaidehi was kneeling beside him.

Her hands were shaking.

"Tez?"

He did not move.

"Tez, wake up."

Nothing.

She shook him.

"Wake up!"

The third child stood behind her.

He was crying.

Adults were running toward them.

Arvind.

Tez's mother.

Vaidehi's mother.

Devadatta.

Several Guardians.

Arvind fell beside his son.

"Tez!"

He placed his hand on the child's chest.

Nothing.

No heartbeat.

Tez's mother began crying.

"No..."

She lifted her son's head.

"No, no, no..."

Vaidehi stared at Tez.

She could not understand.

Only minutes ago he had been laughing.

Now he was still.

Too still.

The memory became painfully quiet.

Then Vaidehi noticed something.

A shadow behind the trees.

She stood.

"Who are you?"

The darkness moved.

A voice answered.

"You called me."

Vaidehi shook her head.

"I didn't."

The Shadow appeared.

It was smaller then.

Not the huge force that Tez had seen in Kaalvan.

It looked almost like a person made of smoke.

Vaidehi stepped backward.

"Can you save him?"

The Shadow looked at the child lying on the ground.

"Yes."

Vaidehi's eyes filled with tears.

"Then save him."

Tez's mother shouted:

"Vaidehi, don't!"

But the girl did not understand.

She only saw her friend lying lifeless.

She only knew that she did not want him to leave.

The Shadow extended one hand.

"What will you give me?"

Vaidehi looked confused.

"I don't have anything."

"You do."

"What?"

The Shadow pointed toward Tez.

"His memory."

Vaidehi shook her head.

"No."

"His life."

"Yes."

The Shadow leaned closer.

"And what comes after his life?"

Vaidehi did not understand.

The Shadow whispered:

"His future."

Arvind rushed forward.

"Stay away from her!"

The Shadow vanished.

For one second, everything became silent.

Then Tez's dead body moved.

His fingers twitched.

His chest rose.

One breath.

Then another.

A heartbeat returned.

Dhum.

Everyone froze.

Tez's mother began crying with relief.

Vaidehi smiled through her tears.

"He came back."

But Arvind did not smile.

He was staring at the darkness.

Because he knew something had happened.

Something terrible.

Something no one else could yet understand.

The memory broke.

---

Tez returned to the chamber with a cry.

Vaidehi was holding him.

"Tez!"

He looked around.

He was sweating.

His breathing was heavy.

"I remember."

Arvind's face was filled with sorrow.

"What did you see?"

Tez looked at him.

"She called it."

Arvind nodded.

"Vaidehi called the Shadow."

Vaidehi lowered her head.

"I was a child."

"I know."

"I didn't know what it was."

"I know."

"I only wanted you to live."

Tez took her hand.

"I know."

She looked at him.

"Then why do I feel like I destroyed everything?"

Tez shook his head.

"You saved me."

Arvind interrupted.

"No."

Tez looked at him.

Arvind's voice trembled.

"She saved your life."

He looked toward the darkness.

"But that is not the same thing."

The chamber became silent.

Tez slowly released Vaidehi's hand.

"What are you saying?"

Arvind took a breath.

"When you died, Tez, your soul was already leaving."

Tez stared at him.

"The Heart tried to hold you."

"The Heart?"

"Yes."

"Then why did the Shadow touch me?"

Arvind looked down.

"Because the Shadow reached you first."

Tez felt cold.

"What did it do?"

"We don't know."

"You do."

Arvind remained silent.

Tez stepped closer.

"You have spent years protecting me from this truth. No more."

Arvind finally spoke.

"The Shadow did not bring you back because it loved you."

Tez said nothing.

"It brought you back because it needed you."

"For what?"

Arvind looked toward the broken Heart.

"For a door."

---

The third child suddenly stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Arvind frowned.

The child shook his head.

"Not for a door."

Tez turned.

"Then what?"

The child pointed at Tez.

"For the door."

Tez stared at him.

The child continued.

"You are not a key."

Tez remembered the words from his mother's memory.

The boy is not the key.

"You are not a lock."

He looked at Vaidehi.

Neither are you.

The child whispered:

"You are the door."

A deep sound shook the chamber.

Dhum.

Tez felt the second heartbeat again.

But this time it did not come from his chest.

It came from the darkness.

The Shadow spoke.

"At last."

Arvind drew his sword.

"Do not answer it."

Tez ignored him.

"What do you want from me?"

The Shadow smiled.

"I have already told you."

"What?"

"Your future."

Tez's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

The Shadow stepped closer.

"I did not ask for your soul."

Tez froze.

"I asked for something much greater."

"What?"

"Your choice."

The chamber shook.

The walls began showing memories.

Thousands of them.

Children.

Kings.

Warriors.

Mothers.

Fathers.

People making choices.

People regretting them.

People losing loved ones.

People refusing to accept death.

Tez saw Vardhan.

Young Vardhan.

His younger brother dying in his arms.

He saw Vardhan begging the Guardians.

Begging the Heart.

Begging anyone who could listen.

Then he saw the Shadow.

Whispering.

I can end death.

Vardhan reached for it.

The memory vanished.

Then another appeared.

Tez himself.

A child.

Standing before the Shadow.

The Shadow asked him:

"If I give you another life, what will you give me?"

Young Tez did not answer.

He was too young.

He did not understand.

The Shadow turned toward Vaidehi.

Then toward Tez.

And whispered:

"One day, you will choose me."

The vision ended.

Tez's eyes widened.

"I never agreed."

The Shadow smiled.

"You were a child."

"That isn't an agreement."

"No."

The Shadow's voice became strangely gentle.

"It was a promise."

Tez felt anger rising inside him.

"I never promised you anything."

The third child looked at him.

"You did."

Tez turned.

"When?"

"When you came back."

The child pointed to Tez's chest.

"You woke up."

Another heartbeat.

Dhum.

"You opened your eyes."

Dhum.

"And you said your first word."

Tez's face became pale.

"What did I say?"

The third child whispered:

"Your name."

Tez remembered.

Not the name he had been called in Suryanagari.

Not Tez.

Something older.

A name buried so deeply that even his own mind had hidden it.

The forgotten name.

The name before Tez.

The Shadow spoke it.

The sound filled the chamber.

The walls answered.

The Heart answered.

Even the seven broken chains answered.

Tez closed his eyes.

For the first time, the name did not feel strange.

It felt like home.

And that frightened him more than anything.

---

Arvind suddenly shouted.

"Run!"

The floor cracked.

A black line raced beneath their feet.

Maitreyi grabbed Bhaskar.

Aarav pulled Vaidehi away.

The third child remained beside Tez.

"Come."

Tez did not move.

"Where?"

"Inside."

"Inside what?"

The child pointed toward Tez.

"Inside the memory."

Tez looked at him.

Then he understood.

The Shadow had been trying to make him remember.

Not because memory itself was dangerous.

Because something had been hidden inside one particular memory.

The memory of his return.

The memory of his promise.

The memory of his first choice.

And the Shadow needed him to remember it willingly.

Tez turned toward the darkness.

"You have been waiting for me."

The Shadow answered:

"For a very long time."

"Why?"

"Because you are the only one who can open the final door."

Tez looked at the broken Heart.

"What is behind it?"

The Shadow's smile disappeared.

For the first time, it looked afraid.

"Your beginning."

Tez's heart stopped for a moment.

"My beginning?"

"Yes."

The Shadow stepped backward.

"And the end."

---

Suddenly, Vardhan appeared at the entrance.

He was barely standing.

Black veins covered one side of his face.

His clothes were torn.

His eyes were filled with pain.

But he was awake.

Tez turned toward him.

"You heard everything."

Vardhan nodded.

"I did."

"Then tell me the truth."

Vardhan looked at Arvind.

Arvind raised his sword.

Vardhan ignored him.

"The Shadow deceived me."

Tez frowned.

"What?"

"I thought it would give me my brother back."

Vardhan's voice broke.

"I thought death could be defeated."

He looked at Tez.

"But it never wanted to defeat death."

"Then what did it want?"

Vardhan stared at the Shadow.

"It wanted someone who had already crossed death."

Everyone became silent.

Tez felt the second heartbeat.

Dhum.

Vardhan continued.

"You."

The Shadow moved.

Vardhan stepped backward.

"It needed someone who had died and returned."

Tez whispered:

"Why?"

"Because only someone who has crossed that boundary can open the door."

Tez looked at the darkness.

"Then why me?"

Vardhan's expression changed.

"Because when you returned..."

He stopped.

Tez waited.

"...you were no longer exactly what you had been before."

Tez looked at his hands.

The black mark was still there.

But beneath it, a faint white light had appeared.

The light spread slowly across his palm.

Vaidehi's hand began glowing too.

Their two Seals answered one another.

Then the third child's chest began glowing.

Three lights.

Three children.

Three pieces of one forgotten truth.

The Heart gave a deep, ancient sound.

And the entire chamber went silent.

A line of writing appeared across its broken surface.

Tez walked closer.

He recognized the symbols.

They were the same symbols from his forgotten childhood.

His forgotten name.

The third child whispered:

"Read it."

Tez looked at the inscription.

For years, he had believed his name was Tez.

For years, he had believed his life began in Suryanagari.

For years, he had believed his family had died and he alone had survived.

But now the truth stood before him.

His life had begun long before Suryanagari.

His death had happened before his real story had even begun.

And his return had never been an accident.

Tez touched the inscription.

The Heart opened.

A single word entered his mind.

The forgotten name.

The name before Tez.

He whispered it.

The moment he spoke it—

every lamp in Kaalvan went out.

The Shadow disappeared.

The third child fell to his knees.

Vaidehi cried out.

And somewhere beneath the ancient city, something enormous opened its eyes.

Then the Shadow spoke one final time.

Not from the walls.

Not from the darkness.

From inside Tez.

"At last."

Tez stood frozen.

A second voice whispered within him.

"You remembered."

He looked at Vaidehi.

She was staring at him in fear.

"Tez... what happened?"

He could not answer.

Because he had remembered the bargain.

He had remembered the moment he returned.

He had remembered what the Shadow had asked.

And he finally understood the truth.

The Shadow had never asked for his soul.

It had never needed his body.

It had never wanted his death.

It had asked for something far more dangerous.

Something that had been growing with him for years.

Something that belonged only to the future.

Tez whispered:

"It didn't want what I was."

Vaidehi stepped closer.

"Then what did it want?"

Tez looked toward the darkness.

His face had lost all color.

"It wanted what I would become."

The Shadow laughed softly.

And for the first time, Tez understood the meaning of its promise.

It had not taken his past.

It had not taken his life.

It had claimed his future.

And now—

that future had finally begun.
