Chapter 70 - The Future That Was Taken (Part - II)

Darkness.

Complete darkness.

Tez could hear nothing.

Could see nothing.

Could feel nothing.

For a few heartbeats, he wondered if he had fallen unconscious.

Then he heard it.

Dhum.

His heartbeat.

Dhum.

The second heartbeat.

But this time, there was something different.

A third sound.

A faint rhythm somewhere beyond them.

Like the heartbeat of something enormous.

Something ancient.

Something that had been sleeping for thousands of years.

Tez opened his eyes.

He was standing in a forest.

Not Kaalvan.

Not Suryanagari.

Not any place he had ever seen.

The trees were tall and silver.

Their leaves moved without wind.

A pale blue light filled the sky.

There was no sun.

No moon.

Only a vast circle of darkness above the forest.

Vaidehi stood beside him.

She looked around in confusion.

"Where are we?"

Tez shook his head.

"I don't know."

The third child was standing behind them.

But this time he looked different.

He appeared younger.

Much younger.

Almost like a four-year-old child.

Tez looked at him.

"You have changed."

The child smiled.

"This is how I remember myself."

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

She too had become younger.

Her clothes were those of a child.

Her hair was tied the same way it had been in the forgotten memories.

Tez looked down.

His own hands were small.

He was a child again.

"No."

Vaidehi stepped closer.

"This is a memory."

Tez nodded.

"The Heart."

"No," said the third child.

"The Shadow."

The forest suddenly became silent.

A figure appeared between the trees.

Tall.

Dark.

Without a face.

Tez knew it immediately.

The First Shadow.

But it did not attack.

It simply stood there.

Watching them.

Young Tez stepped forward.

The present Tez watched himself.

He remembered none of this.

Yet somehow, he knew what would happen next.

The Shadow spoke.

"You asked to see the future."

Young Tez nodded.

The present Tez felt his chest tighten.

He remembered the sentence.

Show me what happens if I don't come back.

The Shadow had obeyed.

The world around them changed.

---

They were standing in Suryanagari.

The village was alive.

But something was wrong.

Tez saw his mother walking through the courtyard.

His father was repairing a wooden door.

Devadatta was speaking with the villagers.

Children were playing near the temple.

Everything looked peaceful.

Young Tez smiled.

"Everyone is safe."

The Shadow stood behind him.

"For now."

The scene changed.

Fire.

Screams.

Men running.

Houses burning.

The temple bell ringing wildly.

Tez watched his mother searching through smoke.

"Tez!"

She was calling him.

Again.

"Tez!"

Young Tez began crying.

"No."

The Shadow whispered:

"This is what happens if you do not return."

The vision changed.

Vaidehi was running through the forest.

She was older.

Blood ran down the side of her face.

"Tez!"

Nobody answered.

She fell to her knees.

Young Tez cried harder.

"Stop!"

The Shadow did not stop.

The scene changed again.

Devadatta was lying beside a broken temple.

Arvind stood alone.

Maitreyi was gone.

Aarav and Bhaskar were nowhere to be seen.

Then came another vision.

Vardhan.

He stood before the Heart.

The seven chains were broken.

The Shadow was behind him.

Vardhan looked at something in his hands.

A small object.

A child's wooden toy.

He whispered:

"I only wanted my brother back."

Then the vision changed again.

The world was empty.

Cities had fallen.

Rivers had dried.

Ancient temples had cracked.

The sky was black.

And Tez stood alone before the Heart.

Older.

His face carried years of pain.

He held the Guardian Seal.

Vaidehi was nowhere.

Neither was Arvind.

Neither was Devadatta.

Neither was the third child.

Tez's older self looked at the Heart.

And said:

"I have nothing left."

The Shadow stood behind him.

It whispered:

"Open the door."

Older Tez raised his hand.

The Seal began to glow.

The great door opened.

Darkness poured out.

Young Tez screamed.

"No!"

The vision disappeared.

Silence returned.

Tez fell to his knees.

Vaidehi caught him.

"Tez!"

He pushed himself up.

"That wasn't real."

The Shadow appeared before them.

"It is possible."

Tez glared at it.

"You showed me lies."

"I showed you one path."

"One path?"

Tez's voice shook with anger.

"You showed me death. You showed me loss. You showed me everyone I love dying."

"Because you asked."

"I was a child!"

"And yet you understood."

Tez froze.

The Shadow came closer.

"You understood the value of what could be lost."

Young Tez stared at it.

The Shadow continued.

"You asked how to save them."

Young Tez whispered:

"How?"

The Shadow raised one hand.

Behind it appeared the great door.

"Return."

Young Tez looked at the door.

"What is behind it?"

"Your future."

"Will I save them?"

The Shadow did not answer immediately.

Then it said:

"If you return, you will have the chance."

Young Tez looked at Vaidehi.

Then at the third child.

Then at the image of his mother.

He closed his eyes.

"I promise."

The present Tez felt something break inside him.

He remembered.

Not the whole conversation.

But enough.

He remembered the feeling.

He had not been afraid of death.

He had been afraid of losing everyone.

That fear had been used against him.

---

The memory changed again.

The children were standing beside the Heart.

The Heart was smaller then.

Still ancient.

Still enormous.

But its surface was whole.

Seven chains surrounded it.

And behind it stood something else.

A shape hidden in darkness.

Tez looked at the third child.

"What is that?"

The child shook his head.

"I don't know."

Vaidehi stepped closer.

The Shadow spoke.

"There are many futures."

Tez looked toward it.

"Then why show me only one?"

"Because you needed to choose."

"You wanted me to choose your future."

"No."

The Shadow's voice became strangely gentle.

"I wanted you to choose a future where you would return."

Tez frowned.

"Why?"

For the first time, the Shadow did not answer.

Instead, the Heart began glowing.

The seven chains shook.

One chain broke.

Then another.

The third child suddenly screamed.

"Don't!"

The memory shattered.

---

Tez opened his eyes.

He was back inside the chamber.

Vaidehi was holding his shoulders.

Arvind stood nearby.

Maitreyi was watching the walls.

Vardhan was sitting in silence.

The third child was staring at Tez.

"You saw it."

Tez nodded.

"The future."

Vardhan laughed quietly.

"No."

Tez looked at him.

"You saw what it wanted you to see."

"What is the difference?"

"Everything."

Vardhan stood slowly.

"The Shadow cannot see the future."

Tez stared at him.

"Then how did it show me?"

"It sees possibilities."

Vardhan's eyes were tired.

"It finds the future that frightens you most."

"And shows it to you."

"Then you begin changing your choices to avoid it."

Tez understood.

The Shadow had not needed to control him.

It had only needed to plant fear inside him.

If Tez believed his family would die unless he returned, he would return.

If he believed Vaidehi would be lost unless he opened the door, he would open it.

If he believed the world could only be saved by following the path shown by the Shadow—

he would follow it.

Vardhan looked at him.

"That is how it controlled me."

Tez's voice was low.

"And you never knew."

"No."

"Until now?"

Vardhan looked at the black veins on his arm.

"Until it was too late."

---

Vaidehi stepped toward Tez.

"So the future can change."

Tez looked at her.

"It must."

"Then don't let it decide."

Tez gave a weak smile.

"You make it sound easy."

"It isn't."

She touched his hand.

"But it is still possible."

Her pendant began glowing.

The Guardian Seal on Tez's palm answered.

White light moved between them.

The chamber disappeared.

Again.

But this time, Vaidehi was still holding his hand.

"Vaidehi?"

"I am here."

They were standing inside another vision.

But this one felt different.

It was not dark.

It was not frightening.

It was silent.

The seven cities appeared around them.

Girivana.

Jalapuri.

Kaalvan.

And the others they had not yet reached.

Each city appeared like a small light.

Then one by one, the lights began changing.

Some became bright.

Some became dark.

One disappeared.

Then another.

Vaidehi whispered:

"They are awakening."

Tez nodded.

"The cities are connected."

A voice came from behind them.

The third child.

But he was no longer a child.

He appeared as a figure made of light.

"I told you."

Tez turned.

"Told me what?"

"That there were paths."

"How many?"

The child looked at the seven lights.

"More than seven."

Tez stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

The child pointed toward one of the lights.

"That was the path I took."

Tez looked closer.

Inside the light, he saw himself.

But this Tez was different.

He had never returned from death.

He had remained behind.

The third child looked at him.

"I am not your brother."

Tez frowned.

"You said you were."

"I am."

"You said you were the Tez who never returned."

"Yes."

"Then who are you?"

The child smiled sadly.

"I am the part of you that stayed behind when you came back."

Tez felt a chill.

"The Shadow?"

"No."

"The Heart?"

"No."

"Then what?"

The child looked toward the seven chains.

"I am the path you abandoned."

Tez was silent.

The child continued.

"When you returned, one future ended."

"And another began."

"You became Tez."

"But I remained behind."

Tez understood.

The third child was not simply another version of him.

He was the memory of a possible life.

A life that could have existed if Tez had never returned.

A life held inside the Heart.

A life the Shadow had learned to use.

Tez stepped toward him.

"Why do you look like me?"

"Because I was you."

"Then why don't I remember you?"

"Because remembering me means remembering the choice."

Tez looked toward Vaidehi.

She was crying.

"Then I will remember."

The third child shook his head.

"You may not like what you find."

Tez answered:

"I have stopped running from that."

---

The vision shifted.

Tez saw his childhood again.

But this time there was something new.

His mother was standing beside the Heart.

Arvind was there.

Devadatta too.

Vaidehi's mother stood beside them.

The three children were sitting near the Heart.

His mother was crying.

Arvind looked angry.

Vaidehi's mother was holding her daughter's hand.

And the Shadow was watching.

Tez heard his mother's voice.

"If he remembers too early, it will find him."

Arvind replied:

"Then erase everything."

His mother shook her head.

"Not everything."

"What remains?"

"The choice."

Arvind looked at her.

"What choice?"

She looked at young Tez.

"The choice must remain his."

Tez's breath caught.

His mother continued:

"If we erase the choice, then we become no different from the Shadow."

Arvind lowered his head.

"What if he chooses wrongly?"

His mother looked at him.

"Then we must trust the man he becomes."

Tez stared at the memory.

His mother had known.

She had known that one day he would face this.

She had not tried to control his future.

She had protected his right to choose it.

The vision changed.

Young Tez was standing before the Shadow.

The Shadow asked:

"Will you return?"

Young Tez answered:

"Yes."

"Even if it hurts?"

"Yes."

"Even if you forget?"

"Yes."

"Even if you lose everything?"

Young Tez hesitated.

Then he looked toward Vaidehi.

She was smiling.

He nodded.

"Yes."

The Shadow whispered:

"Then I will wait."

---

Tez opened his eyes.

Tears were running down his face.

Vaidehi was beside him.

He looked at her.

"You knew."

She shook her head.

"Not consciously."

"But your heart knew."

She nodded.

"Perhaps."

Tez looked toward Arvind.

"My mother didn't want to control my future."

"No."

"She wanted me to choose it."

"Yes."

"Then why did you erase my memories?"

Arvind's eyes filled with tears.

"Because we were afraid the Shadow would make you choose before you were ready."

Tez looked down.

"And now?"

Arvind answered:

"Now you are old enough to know that the choice was always yours."

The words settled heavily between them.

Tez slowly stood.

"I understand."

Vardhan looked at him.

"Do you?"

Tez turned.

"I think I do."

"What?"

Tez looked at the black mark on his palm.

"The Shadow did not steal my future."

Vardhan's expression changed.

"No."

"It stole my understanding of it."

The room became silent.

Tez continued.

"It showed me a future filled with loss."

"It made me afraid of that future."

"And then it waited for me to choose."

He looked at the darkness beyond the sealed door.

"But that future is not destiny."

Vaidehi smiled faintly.

"No."

Tez took her hand.

"It is only a possibility."

The two Seals glowed.

The light spread across the chamber.

For one brief moment, the darkness withdrew.

But then—

all seven lights in the vision turned black.

Maitreyi looked up.

"What happened?"

Arvind's face went pale.

"The cities."

"What about them?"

"They are waking again."

Tez looked toward the wall.

Seven symbols appeared.

One after another.

Mountain.

River.

Forest.

Fire.

Wind.

Stone.

And the seventh—

nothing.

A blank circle.

Tez stared.

"Why is the seventh one empty?"

Nobody answered.

Then the Heart spoke.

Not with words.

With light.

A new symbol appeared.

An eighth mark.

Arvind stepped backward.

"No."

Tez looked at him.

"You know it."

Arvind shook his head.

"I thought it was impossible."

"What?"

"The old records said there were seven locks."

Maitreyi looked at the symbol.

"Then why is there an eighth?"

Arvind whispered:

"Because the seventh was never the last."

The chamber shook.

The seven symbols began moving.

They formed a circle around the eighth mark.

Tez looked at the centre.

There was no city.

No temple.

No mountain.

No river.

Nothing.

Only a single outline.

The outline of a person.

Vaidehi stepped closer.

"Who is that?"

The Heart gave one final pulse.

Dhum.

The eighth symbol disappeared.

The vision collapsed.

The chamber returned.

Everyone stood frozen.

Tez looked at Vaidehi.

She looked back at him.

Neither understood what they had seen.

But somewhere far beneath Kaalvan, something ancient had noticed the awakening of the eighth mark.

And in the darkness, the First Shadow whispered:

"At last."

Not to Tez.

Not to Vardhan.

Not to Arvind.

But to the person standing beside Tez.

The future had been taken once.

Now—

someone was waiting to claim it back.
