Chapter 10 - The Gathering Storm

The wind rose suddenly.

Snow lifted from the ground in swirling waves, circling the clearing like a living storm. The trees bent slightly beneath the sudden force, their branches creaking as the air shifted around Jenny.

For a moment even Victoria looked surprised.

Jenny felt the power moving through her body like lightning beneath her skin. It was stronger than anything she had experienced before. The energy that had once felt distant and mysterious was now fully awake, responding to her emotions.

Her heartbeat thundered in her chest.

The pendant in her hand glowed faintly.

Victoria's red eyes narrowed with fascination.

"Well," she said softly, "that explains a lot."

James stepped closer to Jenny, his body tense and ready to move.

"Stay calm," he murmured.

Jenny didn't answer.

She wasn't sure she could.

The power surging through her felt wild and unpredictable. It moved through her veins like a storm searching for direction.

Ahona watched carefully from the edge of the clearing.

"Don't fight it," she called to Jenny.

Jenny glanced at her.

"What?"

"Your magic," Ahona said calmly. "It reacts to fear."

That wasn't helpful.

Victoria laughed quietly.

"Oh, this is wonderful," she said. "A newborn witch discovering her powers while surrounded by vampires."

Her two companions moved slightly behind her, their crimson eyes fixed on Jenny with hungry curiosity.

James's voice grew colder.

"You're not taking her anywhere."

Victoria tilted her head slightly.

"You're outnumbered."

James didn't argue.

Jenny raised her head slowly.

"No one is taking me anywhere."

Victoria's smile widened.

"You say that as if you have a choice."

Jenny felt the wind swirl harder around her.

The magic inside her pulsed in response to Victoria's words.

"I do," she said.

Victoria took another step forward.

The snow beneath her feet melted slightly from the unnatural heat of her presence.

"You really don't understand your situation," Victoria said quietly.

Jenny's eyes remained steady.

"Then explain it."

Victoria studied her with growing interest.

"You are the first of your kind," she said. "A child of two bloodlines that should never have mixed."

Jenny already knew that.

"But what does that have to do with you?" she asked.

Victoria smiled again.

"Power."

James stepped slightly in front of Jenny.

"Enough."

Victoria ignored him.

"The vampire council will want to study you," she continued calmly. "The witches will want to control you."

Jenny's stomach tightened.

"And you?"

Victoria's smile sharpened.

"I simply want to see what you become."

The wind around the clearing intensified again.

Jenny felt the magic surge violently.

"Careful," Ahona warned quietly.

Jenny struggled to steady her breathing.

The power inside her was reacting to her anger now.

Victoria noticed.

Her red eyes gleamed.

"Yes," she whispered.

"That's it."

James stepped forward suddenly.

"Victoria."

Her gaze flicked toward him again.

"You should leave."

Victoria laughed softly.

"You always were the noble one."

"I'm serious."

Victoria's companions shifted restlessly behind her.

One of them stepped forward slightly.

The movement was enough.

James moved instantly.

He crossed the clearing faster than a human eye could follow and slammed the vampire backward into a nearby tree. The impact cracked the trunk loudly.

The second vampire lunged toward Jenny.

Ahona reacted instantly.

She raised one hand.

A flash of blue light burst from her palm, striking the vampire in the chest and throwing him backward across the snow.

Jenny stared in shock.

Ahona didn't even look at him.

"Told you," she said calmly.

"Witch."

Victoria sighed.

"This escalated quickly."

James returned to Jenny's side.

"You okay?"

Jenny nodded, though her heart was still racing.

Victoria watched them with quiet amusement.

"You know this won't end here."

James's voice remained calm.

"It ends tonight."

Victoria tilted her head.

"You still believe that."

James didn't answer.

The wind continued swirling around the clearing.

Jenny could feel the magic building again, stronger than before.

Victoria noticed it too.

"Your power is unstable," she said thoughtfully.

Jenny clenched her fists.

"Maybe."

Victoria smiled.

"But it's beautiful."

For the first time Jenny saw genuine fascination in the vampire's eyes.

"Imagine what you could become," Victoria continued.

Jenny took a step forward.

"I'm not becoming anything you want."

Victoria raised her hands slightly in mock surrender.

"Relax."

The two injured vampires slowly stood again behind her.

Victoria glanced toward them.

"Not tonight."

Both of them looked surprised.

Victoria returned her attention to Jenny.

"You're still learning."

Jenny frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victoria stepped backward toward the trees.

"It means I'll be back."

James's eyes hardened.

"You shouldn't."

Victoria smiled once more.

"Oh, I definitely should."

Her red eyes lingered on Jenny.

"The council is already moving."

Jenny's stomach tightened.

"What council?"

Victoria's expression turned serious for the first time.

"The ones who truly rule our world."

Before anyone could react, she vanished into the forest with unnatural speed.

The two vampires followed instantly.

The clearing fell silent again.

The wind gradually died down.

Snow settled softly back onto the ground.

Jenny stood frozen for several seconds, trying to process everything that had just happened.

James slowly relaxed his stance.

"Well," he said quietly.

"That could have gone worse."

Jenny turned toward him.

"Worse?"

"They didn't try to kill you."

Jenny looked toward the dark forest where Victoria had disappeared.

"That wasn't comforting."

Ahona stepped forward.

"She wasn't lying."

Jenny looked at her.

"About what?"

"The council."

James frowned.

"You mean the ancient ones."

Ahona nodded slowly.

"They will come."

Jenny felt the uneasy truth settle in her chest again.

"And when they do?"

Ahona met her gaze seriously.

"You'll have to choose a side."

Jenny looked down at the glowing pendant in her hand.

For the first time she truly understood the weight of what she had become.

She wasn't just caught between witches and vampires.

She was the bridge between them.

And somewhere far away, forces far older than Victoria were already beginning their journey toward her.
