Chapter 11 - The Final Stand

The forest was quiet again after Victoria left.

Too quiet.

Jenny stood in the center of the clearing long after the wind had died down. The snow that had swirled around her moments earlier now rested peacefully on the ground, as if nothing unusual had happened.

But Jenny knew better.

Something inside her had changed.

She could still feel the magic moving through her like a faint pulse beneath her skin. It was calmer now, but no less powerful. The pendant in her hand had stopped glowing, though it remained warm against her palm.

James finally broke the silence.

"She wasn't bluffing."

Jenny looked up.

"About the council?"

James nodded.

Ahona crossed her arms thoughtfully.

"The vampire council doesn't move often," she said. "But when they do, it's never for something small."

Jenny frowned.

"And I'm the 'something' this time."

James didn't deny it.

"You're more than that," he said quietly.

Jenny gave him a tired look.

"That's not helping."

Ahona walked slowly toward the edge of the clearing, studying the dark forest where Victoria had disappeared.

"The problem isn't just the vampires," she said.

Jenny looked at her.

"You mean the witches."

Ahona nodded.

"The covens will hear about tonight soon enough."

Jenny sighed.

"So everyone is coming."

James glanced toward the distant mountains visible through the trees.

"Yes."

Jenny rubbed her temples.

"This keeps getting worse."

Ahona turned back toward her.

"Not necessarily."

Jenny raised an eyebrow.

"How is being hunted by two supernatural governments not worse?"

Ahona smiled faintly.

"Because they're not coming just to destroy you."

James frowned.

"That depends on which council arrives first."

Jenny looked between them.

"I feel like you two know a lot more about this world than I do."

James leaned against the porch railing.

"That's because we've lived in it longer."

Jenny gestured toward herself.

"And apparently I was born into it."

Ahona nodded.

"Yes."

Jenny sighed again.

"Well, someone needs to start explaining things."

Ahona and James exchanged a brief glance.

Then Ahona spoke.

"Thousands of years ago," she began, "witches and vampires fought a war."

Jenny blinked.

"That sounds familiar."

James gave her a dry look.

"Most supernatural conflicts do."

Ahona continued.

"The war lasted centuries. Both sides lost thousands."

Jenny folded her arms.

"What started it?"

"Fear," Ahona said simply.

"Of what?"

"Power."

Jenny looked down at the pendant again.

"Let me guess," she said.

"A hybrid child with both powers would terrify both sides."

Ahona nodded slowly.

"Yes."

James added quietly, "Your existence threatens the balance."

Jenny frowned.

"What balance?"

Ahona pointed toward the forest.

"Witches control magic."

She pointed toward James.

"Vampires control physical dominance."

Jenny looked confused.

"And I have both."

"Yes."

Jenny laughed softly.

"That explains the panic."

James didn't smile.

"Not exactly."

Jenny looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

James's expression grew more serious.

"The last time someone like you existed… the war nearly destroyed everything."

Jenny went very still.

"You mean there was another hybrid."

Ahona nodded.

"Yes."

Jenny felt a chill move through her.

"What happened to them?"

Neither of them answered immediately.

Finally Ahona said quietly,

"They died."

Jenny's stomach tightened.

"How?"

James looked toward the dark forest.

"Both councils hunted them."

The words hung in the cold night air.

Jenny swallowed slowly.

"Great."

Ahona stepped closer.

"But you're different."

Jenny raised an eyebrow.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Ahona pointed at the pendant.

"Your mother prepared for this."

Jenny looked down at it again.

"How?"

"She hid you."

Jenny frowned.

"Edward hid me."

Ahona shook her head.

"No."

Jenny looked up sharply.

"What?"

"Edward helped," Ahona clarified. "But the spell that sealed your memories wasn't his."

Jenny felt her heartbeat quicken.

"My mother did it."

Ahona nodded.

"Yes."

James looked thoughtful.

"That explains why it's breaking now."

Jenny blinked.

"What do you mean?"

"Memory spells weaken when the person becomes strong enough to survive the truth."

Jenny stared at him.

"So my magic waking up is breaking the spell."

"Yes."

Jenny looked back toward the forest.

"So eventually… I'll remember everything."

Ahona nodded.

"Probably."

Jenny wasn't sure if that comforted or terrified her.

The three of them stood quietly for a moment.

Then James suddenly straightened.

Jenny noticed immediately.

"What is it?"

James looked toward the dark tree line.

"Something's moving."

Ahona narrowed her eyes.

"Victoria again?"

James shook his head slowly.

"No."

Jenny felt the strange energy ripple through the forest again.

But this time it felt different.

Older.

Heavier.

"What is that?" she whispered.

James's voice dropped.

"Trouble."

From the darkness between the trees, several figures slowly stepped into the clearing.

They moved with calm, deliberate steps.

Their pale skin reflected faintly in the moonlight.

But their eyes were different from Victoria's.

Gold.

Not red.

James's expression hardened.

"Council scouts."

Jenny's heart began racing again.

One of the newcomers stepped forward.

He looked older than the others, his long silver hair tied neatly behind his head.

His gaze settled directly on Jenny.

"So," he said calmly.

"We finally found you."

Jenny held her ground.

"And you are?"

The man gave a polite nod.

"My name is Lucien."

James's voice turned cold.

"You shouldn't be here."

Lucien ignored him.

His golden eyes remained fixed on Jenny.

"The council has been searching for you for a very long time."

Jenny crossed her arms.

"And now you've found me."

Lucien nodded.

"Yes."

Jenny's voice remained steady.

"What do you want?"

Lucien's expression remained calm.

"We want to talk."

James stepped forward.

"That's not how your council usually handles things."

Lucien's smile was thin.

"Times are changing."

Jenny wasn't convinced.

"And if I refuse?"

Lucien's gaze didn't waver.

"That would be unfortunate."

The air in the clearing grew tense again.

Jenny felt the magic inside her stir.

Lucien noticed immediately.

His eyes brightened slightly.

"Fascinating."

Jenny clenched her fists.

"You're not taking me anywhere."

Lucien studied her carefully.

"That isn't my intention tonight."

James frowned.

"Then why are you here?"

Lucien finally looked at him.

"To deliver a message."

Jenny raised an eyebrow.

"What message?"

Lucien's golden eyes returned to her.

"The council invites you to stand before them."

Jenny laughed softly.

"That sounds less like an invitation and more like a trial."

Lucien's expression didn't change.

"Perhaps."

Jenny's grip tightened around the pendant.

"And if I don't go?"

Lucien's voice remained calm.

"Then the witches will find you first."

Jenny felt the cold truth behind those words.

The supernatural world was closing in around her.

Lucien took a step backward.

"You have three days," he said.

Then he turned and disappeared into the forest with the other vampires.

The clearing fell silent again.

Jenny exhaled slowly.

"Well," she muttered.

"That's a problem."

James looked at her seriously.

"Yes."

Ahona crossed her arms.

"And it's only the beginning."

Jenny stared into the dark forest where Lucien had vanished.

For the first time she truly understood something.

The war everyone feared wasn't coming.

It had already begun.
