Chapter 2 - struggles

The sound of Hazel snoring pulled Maya out of her sleep. Her bright red hair fell out of the bun that she had put into last night. Hazel's mouth was hung open, a string of drool dripping out of her mouth and onto the pillow that she slept on. Maya groaned and shoved her face into the pillow.

"Hazel!" Willow yelled, throwing the thing closest to her, at Hazel, which happened to be a shoe. Hazel jumped up, her brown eyes narrow, glaring at the two laughing girls.

Maya's laugh came to a sudden halt when Charlie popped up in Maya's mind. It's been an entire week since she has spoken with Charlie, she couldn't find herself to look at him the same way as she used to. No, it wasn't because of the fact that he was half animal, but because he was in love with her. She didn't feel the same, yes, she loved him, but as if he were a brother to her and Charlie knew that, but he couldn't hold in his feelings for her anymore, he had to tell her. A frown overcame Maya's face, thinking about what Charlie was doing at the moment.

Silence filled the small room, leaving Charlie alone with his thoughts. Every time he would close his eyes he would see Maya shocked expression or crying face. Over and over and over and over again, leaving a painful marking in his mind.

Charlie isn't your normal werewolf, he's a rouge. A rouge is a werewolf that doesn't belong to a pack, also known as a lone wolf. The sound of a phone ringing brought Charlie out of his miniature trance. Charlie picked up his phone and irritated look on his face as he read the name on the screen.

Clicking the answer button, he placed the phone next to his ear. "Charles, we need to speak."

Charlie released an annoyed sigh, "What?"

"Well, it turns out that our lovely friend, Ace, has found his mate." Charlie's body instantly stiffened, knowing where this was going. "Her n-"

"Wait!" Charlie yelled through the phone, not allowing the man on the other line to finish. "I know who his mate is." Charlie said his voice reaching barely above a whisper. "She's my best friend. Give me time, I don't want her to be hurt, let me pull her away from him."

"Hm, that's better than killing her. He won't be able to have her because she doesn't want him," The older male said, taking a pause. "You're brilliant, Charles." Charlie hung up the phone before he threw his phone across the room, tears threatening to spill. "Fuck."

Maya and Hazel walked into the school together, both oddly happy. An arm swings around both of their shoulders. Maya turns around to see Charlie standing there with a side smile stretched across his face. "Charles, long time no see. Where have you been?" Hazel asked placing her hand behind his back walking with him.

"I've been busy this past couple of days." Charlie answered honestly, glancing at Maya. Charlie hasn't told Hazel or Willow about him being half animal. Everytime Charlie would glance towards Maya she would instantly look away, not wanting to talk about Charlie's confession.

The only thing on Charlie's mind was how was he going to protect Maya, without involving Ace. Ace began to pace back and forth in his office, not being able to control the anger that pulsed through his body. "Ace, relax." Zac said placing a hand in Ace's shoulder, stopping him.

"How can I?" He asked. "How the hell can I when I know he's out there?! When he is looking for her?" Ace's voice grew with every word he spoke. Closing his eyes and taking a few deep breaths, Ace felt his stiff body begin to relax.

"Listen to me, Ace. She's your mate, you have to protect her. If Noah is really after her, then you know what you got to do." Zac said.

Ace hung his head low, "What if she doesn't accept me? Or what if he gets to her before I do?" Ace's biggest fear was his mate rejecting him, even though Ace was an alpha, so most she-wolves would throw themselves at him anyway, but because she was human, it was an entirely different story. She has no idea what the werewolf world was like, and unfortunately, Ace didn't want Maya to find out, but still wanted her with him.

Ace was confused and ready to explode from his own thoughts. "Ace, you really need to stop for a second and think about what you are saying. You're an alpha, it's your job to protect." Ace looked up at his best friend before a small smirk tugged at his lips.

"Maya~" Hazel sang as Maya began to drift off into her own world. "You been out of it all day, you okay." A look of concern crossed over Hazel's face.

Turning her body towards her friend, Maya smiled softly and nodded. The rest of the walk home, Maya kept to herself, continuously thinking about Charlie, and what had happened a week ago. Hazel had abandoned Maya about two blocks back, having to go to work. Just as Maya looked up her eyes meet very familiar silver like eyes. Maya breath got caught in her throat as she stared into Ace's eyes with amazement. Ace's entire body stiffened as he felt Maya's stare on him.

"Hey." Ace said. His voice was shaky, he felt the nervousness beginning to pulse through his veins as he continued to hold her stare.

Maya smiled and waved back politely. This took Ace by surprise, he was hoping to hear her voice, but at the same time, he had no idea how to carry a conversation. Ace was always by himself when growing up, other than Zachary, so he wasn't very good with keeping a conversation interesting or even going for that matter. "Apologies if I startled you." Ace said rubbing the back of his neck.

Maya shook her head softly, a small smile played on her lips. Ace noticed that Maya was fascinated with his eyes, "Do you like my eyes?" He took a baby step forward. Maya nodded her head absentmindedly, still in awe with Ace's eyes.

"Is it the color?" Maya nodded her head once again. This time pulling her gaze away from his Ace, only to begin to roam his face. His black hair fell messily onto his forehead, some of it covering his eyes. "Do they remind you of something."

Ace knew that he was most likely giving away that he knew something, Maya knitted her eyebrows together, not knowing how he would know that, but nevertheless, Maya nodded her head. "An animal right?" Ace asked yet another question, harshly biting on his bottom lip out of nervousness.

The shock was clearly evident on Maya's face. She was completely caught off guard by his question. Maya took a small step back, slightly afraid.

Nodding her head, Maya eyed the strange man in front of her. "I know, you have questions. Meet me in the woods at eight o'clock sharp and I'll explain everything to you." Ace said, walking away, not giving Maya any time to respond. Maya stared at Ace's retreating figure, her face contorted into confusion, not really sure how to feel about what just happened.
